Kaiba didn't fight through anything by strength of character. He was a violent, hateful little shit who drove people to suicide, abused his brother, and hired Leatherface to kill Yugi. The whole reason he invented the holographic technology was to torture people with it.

Then he got mind crushed, picked up the pieces and channeled most (key word) of that energy into showboating and an amusement park to complete the transformation of his crazy stepfather's warlord empire into something that actually brings people joy. Not that the man was not too intense for his own good. Not that that comparison was every really fair; Kaiba usurped and all but recreated an international corporation when he was what, 20, while Yugi was a high school nerd: Duel Monsters was just the one place where their lives overlapped, and it was so important to Kaiba's keeping some grip on reality as a kid that it took him far to long to realize his duelist crown was simply not necessary for his well-being.

Duel Monsters didn't exist when Kaiba was a kid. At the absolute most, it's not even six years old, and realistically it'd have to be less than that. He obsesses about it because it's the one game he hasn't conquered, not because of any special connection.

Damnation, the Virtual World filler snuck into my thought process. I am not entirely wrong though, I recall he and Atem's spat about moving on from the past, how Kaiba wrongly equated Duel Monsters mastery with his other dreams and getting beaten at Battle City forcing him to see that, however grudgingly (and temporarily).

I wouldn't go too far deep into that image, most likely the guy that made it only saw the 4kids dub of Yu-Gi-Oh and the FUNi dub of Z, if you look at how much the dubs changed the characters, what they're saying makes a lot more sense.
