Favorite "Original" International Opening?

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Thu May 28, 2015 10:34 pm

Personally, if I were to rank my favorite openings for the Dragon Ball animes, they're all the original Japanese openings, and further down my ranking list, I find myself preferring various dubs of those openings (the German dub of "Chala Head Chala" comes pretty damn close to the quality of the original, in my opinion).

However, various countries took the liberty of not dubbing the Japanese songs and instead creating their own "original" openings. I'll post some links to some of them, but feel free to add your own. If I had to rank them, they would be...

1) The opening for the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball. I gotta say, I think this song is pretty good. "Makafushigi Adventure" or a dub of it would have been better, but all things considered, this sets up the show pretty well and is one of the few good things to come out of FUNimation's first attempt at the show, in my opinion. The intro with the narrator sets up the more mysterious aspects of the show, and then we immediately dive into a very catchy, well-sung rock song with just the right amount of light-hearted cheesiness and enthusiasm. I don't love it, but I really like it!

2) "What Is Your Destiny," the Italian opening for DBZ. At times a little too reliant on techno...a lot of Italian anime openings seem to be like that, oddly enough...but I think it captures the adventurous spirit of the show, and they actually bothered to write lyrics. Whoever the singer is, you can tell he's really into what he's singing, and I find myself humming the song whenever I hear it. And hey, bonus point for taking a page out of Japan's book and sprinkling in a random English phrase throughout the song.

3) "Rock the Dragon," the North American opening for DBZ. To be honest, I've never really liked this song, and it doesn't really capture the tone or spirit of the show. It does, however, appear to have some energy behind it at least.

4) The Arabic opening (song name unknown). More "interesting" than good. Were it not for the visuals and repeated use of the words, "Dragon Ball," I'd have no reason to think this was an opening for DBZ. It sounds very ancient, mysterious, and Middle Eastern...interesting to listen to, but it doesn't particularly fit the show that it's being used to open, in my opinion.

5) "Rock the Dragon," the Westwood dub version. This is an alternative version of "Rock the Dragon" that was used to open the Westwood dub, a.k.a. the "post-Saban Ocean dub." I chuckle a little bit every time I hear this one. I'd normally put it at the same level as the original version, but the way the singer keeps extending "Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" always sounded silly to me. It sort of reminds me of that one adult we all knew who tried way too hard to sound cool to kids, and talked in odd ways that resembled "Macho Man" Randy Savage (RIP). "Seeeriously duuude, this is coooooolll.....oh yeeeeeaaaaahhhh!"

6) The French opening (song name unknown) for DBZ...this was also dubbed into a few different languages in European countries that received the French version of the show for dubbing purposes. Oh boy...this one is just torture to listen to, I'm sad to say. The Westwood version of "Rock the Dragon" at least had some decent guitar and drumwork here and there. With this opening, we have nothing but cheap-sounding synthesizers, extremely repetitive vocals, and an overall sound that sounds far, far too childish, even for a kid's show.

Which one is your favorite (if you like them at all, of course, and why)? Do you have any other "original" international openings you'd like to share?

I have sweet nostalgia for Rock The Dragon and the Westwood Dub Z opening. I mean... Dragon Ball Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Oh, God. That never gets old.

But as far as good opening goes, I'd have to say the this English opening for Dragon Ball. I'm not whether that opening was done by Funimation though, if someone could clarify. I would also give the Blue Water opening for GT some props for being real catchy. :)

Those are both great (I really liked FUNimation's dub of "Makafushigi Adventure" which is the first song you linked to), but for clarity's sake, I was asking what is everybody's most (and least, if they wish) favorite opening that is an original opening, and not a dub or cover of one of the Japanese songs. Like I said, I like those songs you linked to, but they are technically dubs of the Japanese songs, not original songs.

I do apologize, of course...the use of the term "original" here is a tad confusing.

Oh, you don't need to apologize, it's my mistake for getting confused. :)

My favourite original opening would have to be the opening for the Ocean dub of Dragon Ball. It's just a really catchy song.

From favorite to least favorite

1. "Main title" by Shuki Levy, Haim Saban and Ron Wasserman (aka "Rock the Dragon") : Classic, iconic and energizing

2. The 'ultimate uncut' metal opening by Dave Moran : Obviously this song isn't very 'Dragon Ball' although i personally liked it. Sort of like a more extreme version of Rock the Dragon

3. "Dragonball Z" by Faulconer productions (the instrumental FUNi dub opening) : Pretty good. Probably one of the more underrated Faulconer tracks, since it's usually overshadowed by "Rock the Dragon"

4. "Main title" by Peter Berring and Brian Griffith (the Ocean/BLT dub opening) : A little cheesy, although it's a lot closer to the spirit of the Japanese version when compared to FUNi's other openings

5. "Dragonball Z" by Tom Keenlyside, John Mitchell and David Iris (the Westwood dub opening) : Even cheesier than the BLT opening. This sounds like something straight out of the 80s, despite the fact it was recorded in like 2000

I really like the Italian versions of the openings. You've only posted the DBZ opening, but they also did original songs for DB and DBGT:

I really, really hate that opening. But the worst part is that the one you've posted is the second version. There is a previous one, used for the first episodes, and I don't know which one of them I hate the most:

IIRC, there was also a French DB opening (reused for the Blue Water dub), one for DBGT, and yet another one for DBZ.

Holy crap I wanted to find this one for so long, like UltimateHammerBro pointed out there's an earlier and more common version of that song, but I actually remember hearing this one in way back then in a multilinguage version dedicated to every cover of this very song and damn it was hard to find, thank you.

WHICH leads to me to the portuguese version, commonly known as "Zê, Zê, Zê" over here, but specifically the one that aired during Movie 12, in which as a kid it was the hypest shit to me: The Narrator shouting the title of the movie, the first bit of We Gotta Power and then Boom, start the "Dragon Ball Zê Zê Zê". Looking back now it's terrible (but still catchy), and actually getting We Gotta Power would have been way better but it's so nostlagic for me.

Other favourites are easily the Italian intro of DBZ and DBGT, and these are kinda nostalgic to me as well cause these were one of the most donwloaded sound bytes for a MSN Messenger addon that let you play certain sound bytes in real-time while you were chatting and these would get spammed in group chats.

Honestly I really like Dragon Soul, Kuu Zen Zetsu Go, Cha la head cha la, Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku, some of the Buu Kai endings, and whatever that pretty song that played to close the original Dragon Ball. Unless I'm forgetting others, which I may, everything else I either don't like or find flat embarrassing. Rock the dragon being the only one I kinda like the sound of but the constant "lyrics" and such no.

It's curious, this second version of "Zê, Zê, Zê" (the name is perfect for it  ) was aired in Spain until recently.

In the original airing, we had the earlier version of the song in Spanish, then a dub of Chala Head Chala, but in reairings from 2007 onwards, which were supposedly using the very same masters from the 90s, they switched into THAT around episode 100 or so, for no apparent reason. Imagine the audience expecting Chala Head Chala, and some cheap French song appears. Eww.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the German "Das Geheimnis der Dragonballs" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InTffr94hek), their opening for the original Dragon Ball. It's very techno-90's-y (or maybe 2000's-y?), but it's pretty catchy, I kinda like it. Besides that, I like the Italian opening for the original Dragon Ball and its random English lyrics, along with Rock the Dragon, mostly for nostalgic reasons; it was used in the Danish dub, even though it was dubbed from the French version. Huh, definetly better than the French opening ...

I'm impressed that you mentioned the Arabic Opening to Dragon Ball Z, TheBlackPaladin. It's not that well-known outside of the region.

My Saudi roommate even mentioned that he was surprised that I knew of it and that it was on YouTube. Good job, man!

The Latin American opening for DBZ is something very special to me, but I've always been open minded to hear how other countries try to translate it or give their own spin to it. (The Portuguese-Portugal is funny to me, but it's okay)

There is one that is like very much as an "original opening". It was made by Andy Baylor and I saw it on Cartoon Network years ago. I think it was called "DBZ theme". I loved the "Dragon Ball ZEEE ZEEE Zeee zee..."
This was the only version I could find with the "Android Saga" opening. Ends at 1:47

DRAGON BALL IS THE KING OF (Fighting) ANIME!!!!!!! In my opinion, at least...

My reaction to anything about Dragon Ball post-2013 that I don't like and/or is stupid. :P

I tolerate the original French version of this song (it has that "old cheesy European anime opening theme" feel to it) but the English version feels just wrong.

This topic talks about original songs, not dubs of the original Japanese songs.

Well, I hate them all, but I have some nostlagic place for the ''Das Geheimnis der Dragon Ball'' German opening.
It has also a pretty weird custom animation of some flying trashbin and cinema hall with seats, lol.
That's the opening of my childhood.
