Hopefully this thread will eventually be where I share some of the videos I’ve created, but I wanted to get your opinions on the matter first.
First of all, I’ve been doing a lot of video editing lately, where I’ve been fitting the DBZ Season Sets video with the Kai dub. I’m doing it for myself because I personally like how “modern” the Season Sets look, even compared to Kai, although that obviously has the superior dub and placement. Then, I got the idea to edit them into a sort of marathon, without any eye-catches or intro/outro. I’ve been dividing them into mini arcs, such as:
Raditz Saga
Training for the Saiyans
Saiyans Arrive and Nappa Fights
Goku Vs. Vegeta
Now since each one is between 60-90 minutes, I’ve further edited them to give them more of a cinematic presentation (changing the order of scenes, removing/shortening shots, etc.). The eye-catches and episode changes have (mostly) seamless transitions.
To give you an idea, here is a workprint of the intro to Saiyans Arrive and Nappa Fights. Keep in mind that this short intro contains edits from 2 Kai episodes, 3 DBZ episodes, original placement of sound fx, and re-ordered/cut scenes (i.e., I'm not just posting episodes).
For me, this is the best possible way to watch DBZ. Completely uninterrupted until each mini-arc has some sort of closure (because who watches just one episode at a time?). And it has the Kai dub and Yamamoto score. Yes, the video from the Season Sets is widescreen and saturated, but that helps the cinematic and modern look, in my opinion.
I really want to freely share this with people. YouTube would be the best place to do this, but I’m skeptical. Now my question to all of you is…
1) Is this allowed?
I’ve posted shorter bits on YouTube (with watermarks) and YouTube does a decent job of recognizing the intellectual property and ensuring the proper copyright holders are able to monetize the videos. But what about 60-90 minute “movies”? Plus, I would want to leave off the watermark if I can so that people can really enjoy it.
2) Is it ethical to share it?
Funimation has put a lot of work into releasing Kai and the Season Sets. The last thing I want to do is undermine their work by putting out something that some people could consider to be superior to the Season Sets and Kai by themselves. And since there are ways to download YouTube videos, they could potentially lose sales. Even if its only a few people that do it, I don’t want that to be my fault. An even worse possibility is that people download the videos, and try to sell them as bootlegs. Or, maybe I'm just being paranoid.
So what do you all think? Like I said, this may be the best version of DBZ for some people and I really want to share it with them on YouTube. On the other hand, this may have unwanted implications. If something like this is straight-up illegal or restricted by YouTube, let me know and it’s done; I won’t share them. If it’s more of a gray area though, what are your opinions on trying to share these videos?
