What is the lamest thing to come out of modern DBZ?

I dislike the influx of generic goofy, exaggerated anime faces:
I only used BoG Vegeta as an example cause it's the easiest to find and he used to be a character that very RARELY expressed himself in such a way. It's become prominent in modern DBZ. For example, Golden Freeza has so many silly facial expressions that the figuarts toy ended up featuring goofy face plates. It completely goes against the character established in the series.

I don't recall this AT ALL in the anime, except during few moments that subverted the audience's expectations so much that they ended up being very amusing (e.g. Freeza blushing at the Ginyu Force; Freeza's face when his tail was bitten or got bitch slapped by SSJ Goku; Vegeta's expression when he learned Goku was offering Bulma nudes to the Old Kai; etc). Now, it's very frequent.
Those kind of facial reactions have been a part of Dragon Ball since, well, day 1. Especially, in the manga. The anime tends to tone down that nature for whatever reason.
I usually reference the DBZ half. >.> But yeah, I guess DB did have a lot of this. It worked better though, given the nature of that portion of the show. Works better in manga form too.

But look at the fight against Frieza in Namek, and the moment he's slaughtered on Earth by Trunks. Compare his composure and expressions to those he has in F. And all those expressions Vegeta has nowadays. Just too much... kawaii/fluff for me. In DBZ, this stuff usually occurred, specifically, during comedic moments. Now it's integrated into what should be serious scenes. idk how else to explain it. =P

Those kind of facial reactions were in the 'DBZ' portion of the anime and manga, as well. Especially in the Majin Boo arc:

Those all work and are hilarious. The fight with Gotenks was gag galore. All those other scenes are comedic. It's very reserved and effective. Most of the time, you don't expect them to be drawn that way (i.e. they were used at just the right time), which makes it all the better.

My complaint isn't so much the faces themselves, just that they're used more frequently and in unfitting situations. Again, look at Golden Frieza. None of that should be funny. He looks so goofy a lot of the times, which is not the way Frieza should be portrayed. Look at that face he makes after Goku is pierced through the heart or when he sees Beerus. I would link it, but it'd get taken down. It just kind of messes with the tone. Incidentally, the Kid Buu arc went about it beautifully. It was so absurd seeing Goku and Buu bite each other in the middle of the fight, yet it never ever lost its tone. I mean, it almost physically hurt seeing Vegeta get choked by him.

Well, in all fairness, Kid Boo was not not meant to be a villain taken lightly at all either. Hell, the first act he committed was trying the world. And when that failed, he tried again, but this time made sure he did succeeded. The point I'm trying to make is that both Kid Boo and Freeza are very intimidating characters and having the occasional "goofy" face won't detract from the character or the scene of the tone. Because you are already know first hand just how dangerous those characters are, irregardless of how they may be portrayed through brief, certain facial expressions. I mean, when all is said and done in ROF, Freeza destroys the world, albeit temporarily. No amount of "goofy" facial expressions prior to that can take away from the moment, and how serious and dramatic it was.

The goofiness of his reactions lightens the mood of the actual battle though, and makes Frieza less intimidating.

But I agree with this. Other stuff from F took away from that moment, but that's another story. :D

I think the deal with the goofy faces is who is doing them, less so about frequency of the facial expression type being used. Vegeta NEVER made goofy faces. In the Saiyan arc, he makes insane/maniacle faces when he lost his composure but it never looked goofy, it looks frightening. Freeza had a few needed gag faces between long periods of serious narrative. It was balanced well.

However, in the pre-Saiyan arc stuff, you never see Piccolo, Tenshinhan, and a few others make those kind of faces when everyone else was. Tenshinhan did a goofy face during his volleyball attack, yes, but the context was different. It was to contrast the dire situation and Ten was in delight in how he was manhandling Goku in a sarcastic way. Vegeta and Freeza in the new DB stuff is not in the same context. I notice Vegeta is almost always acting out of character, being used as a punching bag which reminds me of how Yamcha was treated in the 23rd TB. You have Yamcha trying to be serious but gets toyed with constantly by God; later he throws his sokidan and the whole mood changes to a more serious/dire mood. Vegeta is used the exact same way now, where he does get his serious bits in and a decent hit to the villain, but prior to, and after, he is constantly mocked (ala goofy facial expressions).

I just try to think back to the Saiyan arc and how Vegeta use to be, while he gave exaggerated expressions, it was never goofy, and looked psychotic and frightening, desperate even. But now, Vegeta is not the same, nor are any of the other allies to Goku. Everyone is downplayed so heavily except for Goku. It started with Yamcha, but even Vegeta has been victim to this. They stop being a rival to Goku and are relegated to a gag character.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Maybe you're right. For example, Vegeta remained serious and fearful when he encountered the Ginyu Force in the Namek saga. If that occurred in modern DBZ, he'd react like this:
I hate that. lol.

I dont like how now everybody thinks that Goku is dumb as hell

Reading the manga I never really got the vibe that goku was '' dumb ''.

Everytime you try reading something about Goku people tend to say that goku is stupid and the way dbzabridged made his character, it is even furthermore making people believe that he indeed is all muscle and no brains, when in the manga he was no dumb at all, I mean sure, he may not know what marriage is or early on his life the difference between a boy and a girl, but he learned to for example drive bulmas motorbike pretty fast..

Goku is actually pretty smart. Just also really ignorant and naive. In general, people tend to have a hard time distinguishing between smart and knowledgeable. =P

It goes on and on. Pick one manga chapter at random and you'll probably find similar faces. It has been a staple of the franchise ever since its creation, it's nothing "new". You're entitled to dislike it, sure, but don't pin this on modern Dragon Ball.

I don't get the Golden Freeza complaints either. It doesn't make him look goofy in any way. If anything, his exaggerated facial expressions should make him look batshit insane, which I suspect he has become ever since this scene.

None of those count. I'm not expressing myself well, I guess.

Those faces you posted are done in precise moments, you know? In comedic scenes, after being shocked or whatever, they make those faces, and it's funny. I love it! I literally laughed after half of the ones you posted. In the middle of battles, a villain is smacked or killed, and they make a pretty silly expression, but it doesn't take away from the tone or mood either; it's just weird (in a good way). That last pic of Frieza isn't goofy; he has a sinister face. Same with the vid you linked.

But in the new stuff, they're overusing generic expressions that are common in a lot of anime. Not over-the-top, but stuff like that Vegeta picture I posted above your post. You see that same expression in so many anime. Golden Frieza does make a lot of generic goofy expressions. Like I mentioned, so much so that the figuarts toy has these beauties:

I really don't see a difference between the Freeza picture I posted and the face Golden Freeza makes after Goku goes down. They're both almost the same and portray the same level of insanity. I see what you're getting at what Vegeta, and I get the complaint though it doesn't bother me, but with Freeza it's just more of the exact same, every face Freeza makes in RF, he has already made earlier in the series.

I am sorry but that is because Vegeta has changed as a character and doesn't have a stick up his butt anymore. If Modern DBZ was old DBZ reanimated (like what Kai should have been) then you may have a point but I feel you are just complaining for the sake of complaining here.

He made that face in anime filler during the Inside of Boo filer with the slugs and shit. He made the face when he lost rock paper cut against Goku. He also made the face when Boo electrocuted Vegeta.

I like Super Saiyan God since it came out alongside Battle of Gods and was the first new transformation in decades. I thought it brought along some of that rejuvenation the film did too into the franchise.

Vegeta's rage boost is the only thing that I really agree with you on. That's it.

Frieza coming back is whatever, though I did like the new form.

I didn't think Gine and Bardock caring about their children would be lame or any parents feeling that way. Seemed like it gave them a sense of humanity after all, why do all Saiyans have to be cold-blooded?

Anyway:

Super Saiyan God itself, the design is cool, but the transformation is a big no-no.
Vegeta's rage boost.
Dragon Ball Minus and Episode of Bardock, all of it.
Most of the plot points in Resurrection 'F'.

Vegeta: "Wraaaha braaaaaah! No I wanna fight!"
Goku: "OMG Vegeta-chan you're so smart, I completly agree! Let's bet the Earth's future because we wanna test our fightining skills!"

They understood that it was the fastest, easiest and safest solution. They simply didn't want the fastest, easiest and safest solution. They wanted to challenge the androids. That has nothing to do with being smart or being dumb. Even Piccolo wanted to fight them, which is why he agreed with them.
