Ki Klash: A Weekly* Tenkaichi 3 Netplay Tournament!

Post by SilBee » Fri Jun 12, 2015 8:33 pm

Evening folks, first time poster here! I'm a competitive-minded gamer with some experience running minor Super Smash Bros. online tourneys, and I recently took a look back at Tenkaichi 3. It seems to get some flak for being either too brain-dead, unbalanced, or too complicated to do anything other than charge up and use Blast attacks. After some experience in competitive fighting games, I can honestly say this rep could not be more untrue. So I've decided to take a step and start up something new: a Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3 Weekly Netplay Tournament!
Image
Since this is a netplay tournament, we'll be using the Gamecube/Wii emulator Dolphin (which unfortunately means you'll be restricted by computer power) and as such will be playing the Wii version of BT3. Don't let that stop you from trying to run the game, for the most part the requirements are modest! For you PS2 enthusiasts, the PDF below has a nifty bit in the FAQ that will help you out!

Here's the full rulelist PDF file with everything you'll need to play at the top and a nifty little FAQ on how to setup the game at the bottom: Link

I'll post the main match rulelist in a quote here as well:
Rules
 Timer 240, best 2 out of 3 Matches, Map Setting OFF
 Base forms must be selected, transformation is allowed during fight
--- Fusions are considered their own character
 Custom 3 must be selected when choosing your character
--- Characters with only 3 bars of health have been brought up to 4 using this custom set to equalize with the majority of the other characters
--- Flight has also been enabled for non-flying characters
 Matches must only be played on the following legal stages (provided in the rules PDF)
--- This is to discourage camping and potential unfair advantages due to the landscape
--- The host of the match decides the first stage, the loser of the last match decides from then on
--- A non-legal stage may be played on if both players agree to it
These rules are entirely subject to change as we continue running tourneys and figuring out what works and what doesn't.

I plan on providing commentary for matches and streaming them over at my Twitch.tv channel, with a Youtube upload afterwards possibly in the cards as well.

If you wish to participate and for easy viewing of tournament progress, sign-ups are open on Challonge: Link
*****To minimize no-shows, participants will be required to revisit this page and check in an hour before the tournament begins!*****

Now for a request or few:
  • I'm not going to announce the definite date for our first tourney before I do any stress testing, instead I would like to ask for some humble helpers in this endeavour. If you're interested in helping me test latency and desync frequency and you know you can run the game in Dolphin, please shoot me a PM. Keep an eye on this post and I'll update the OP when I decide to start us up!
  • Any feedback is much appreciated and I'll answer as many questions as I can. I plan to have a post-tourney feedback survey of sorts so we can improve in the future.
  • If you want to help run the tourney in some way, shoot me a PM as well! I'm particularly looking to put together a committee of experienced Tenkaichi players that can help me decide any changes that need to be made going forward. Any help is appreciated however (nicer logo pls :? )
  • And finally, SHARE SHARE SHARE this around! The more news spreads, the more we can grow and the more great players we can showcase!
Thanks for reading! Hope you're getting excited!

I would really want to try this, but I don't think my laptop is up to the task, specially not in summer in which it tends to overheat a lot. I'll probably give it a try though to see how it goes.

Just as a suggestion, I don't think non flying characters should be able to fly. It gives them disadvange, but it also gives them some advantages as well, like being able to evade certain attakcs because they are slowly falling. They are just different kinds of characters, like androids that charge automatically, or androids that absorv energy.

Thanks for your interest! Here's hoping more people will be too so we can get something started. I've definitely seen laptops run Dolphin rather well, however my only experience with it was running Gamecube games. If you can get setup at all I still suggest giving it a try on the absolute minimum graphics settings.

Worth consideration for sure. I'll definitely give it some thought.
