No offense, but... do you think you could give us a review? I'm curious to know stuff like:
  • Whether the dub uses a completely different script than the TV dub or simply a "less-censored" version (the TV re-dub used a slightly-modified version of the original 1995 dub script)
  • How the dub handles the... err... "more interesting" scenes
  • ...er... other stuff
So... whaddaya say? Pretty please? :D

How close was the original 1995 script to the original anyway? Are we talking Viz close, DB dub close, or Freeza saga "close"?

I do not watch the dub normally (and thus have not watched the uncut dub on this set), however I do have both this set and the old 1995 dub set to make comparisons with.

So I'll try get around to it in the next couple days, I'm off work for most of this coming week, in theory anyway.

Pretty much "Freeza-saga" close. But it was more because of the naughty bits than anything else (although it still had its fair share of bad dub lines in the parts they left in). :?

Ah yes, like the famous "Goku sounds like 'Go poo'"-line?

I found the time to watch a few episodes today, and the "uncut" dub is pretty close to the TV dub, with a little less censoring along the way.

As for how some of the more "interesting" as SaiyaJedi put it, scenes play out in the uncut dub:

When trying to get Goku to give her his Dragon Ball in the first episode, instead of offering him a feel, Bulma offers him a "peak" instead, I was somewhat surprised they did that and didn't just use some cover dialogue given their history with this series.

As for the bath scene in episode two, they did use a bit more coverup dialogue in that, in the original version Goku talks about how she has a butt on her chest, and she eventually asks about his age before snapping and throwing stuff at him, the dub however simply makes it seem like she's upset because he thinks she's jealous about not having a tail.

As it stands, it certainly does not seem anything like the Yu Yu Hakusho dub, where the uncut DVD dub (Which I really enjoy) is almost completely different from whats on the TV dub.

Anyway thats all I've checked so far, I'll post a few more observations as I get the time.

They're fairly inconsistent with cover-up dialogue in general on the uncut dub. I think it depends on exactly how much is shown visually. Bulma bribing Oolong with ice-cream instead of her panties during the first bukodai, but they still have him learing at her when she's standing on his shoulders. (Although he does say "Good thing I'm not a pervent", and I really can't tell if they're trying to imply that he isn't a pervert, or whether it's sarcasm/a joke.)

That line of Oolong's reminds me of the scene they changed with Roshi and Buruma where instead of wanting a look at her breasts, they have him say he wants her to arrange a date with an older woman! Then when Oolong in disguise as Buruma suggests himself, he says she's a little young! Oh the irony!
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

So wait, is Madman basically Funimation's distributor in AUS? If so, how did they manage to get the original 13 eps before we did?

Yep, Trimark/Kidmark/Lion's Gate, whatever you want to call them, their distribution rights probably only covered North America, that'd be my guess as to why.

That is super-ironic to the max!

I guess they've settled on writing him as a pervert, but not one who is overly paedophilic. Which is a fair enough compromise, I suppose. Certainly better than the early days of DBZ, where all traces of his pervertedness were exterminated with extreme prejudice.

In fact, a lot of the DB dub reminds me of their approach to "HELL/HFIL". They are changing it enough not to get into trouble, but leaving enough in so that intelligent fans can figure out what is going on. Such as no-one actually coming out and saying that General Blue is gay, but leaving in lots of hints and implications. (And, to be honest, I think it's probably a good thing they took out Kuririn's "I didn't know there were gay bad guys line". That justs comes across as weird.)
