"Dragon Ball Super" Series Official Announcement & Discussion Thread

I feel like, it will re-tell BOG somewhat but focus on mostly new things. But I don't think it will retell ROF if it even gets to that point. If anything, I feel like the main focus of the series will be on the events that happen before/after BOG and leading up to ROF. As in, whatever the deal is with Champa and the training and acquisition of SSGSS with Whis.

I keep seeing this stuff about a 9 star Dragon Ball and I wonder what else Toriyama has come up with. Is Champa even the villain? Or is he just another character and the true villain hasn't been seen yet? In these kinds of posters, do they usually reveal the main villains? For a poster promoting an upcoming series?

I think he looks tougher and stronger there, his muscles and neck are a bit bigger. In BoG he looked like a teenager.

They aren't going to alter the design. It wouldn't be worth it from the marketing/merchandise perspective. Best you should hope for is getting bigger muscles if the people don't pay attention and go off model while animating, but it won't be something the staff makes a conscious decision about.

Yes, that's what I'm hoping for. It's not that big of a difference, most people like Noah wouldn't notice it, but I think it's very noticeable. I'm just glad they abandoned the skinny, doe eyed look for SSGSS.

Probably if it performs well they may strecht it or if it does bad it will be cut like GT.

I don't know what their intention was for SSGSS. The normal animation and the various games seems to have them with traditional sized muscles, but the character design sheets for the film clearly have the thinner muscles and so do the 3D model used in Resurrection F. Kind of a mess.

Yamamuro's designs for those forms have been released in some format? I know Toriyama's designs are in the Movie Guide but I haven't seen the former.

Single images have been used in the various magazines, but a lot of the settei were posted at various events. I'm not sure pictures were allowed at the ones from after the SSGSS reveal though, so a lot of the quality on the important ones aren't really worth looking at. But like on this one here for Vegeta, even if the quality is bad, you can clearly tell he's supposed to be a lot thinner. It's SUPER noticable in the side view:



Goku's too, just for completion. But the quality is even worse...


This is Yamamuro's SSGSS Goku though from a magazine, as well as his design of regular Goku. Again muscles are thinner.

Hmm...strange. I'm thinking any potential inconsistencies is simply thanks to key animators drawing as they like, but for the most part Gokuu does look like he is 'thinner' than the usual 'big' Gokuu.

What do you guys think are the chances that this will be renamed internationally to "Dragon Ball Z Super"? It does take place during Z's 10 year time skip after all.

Would it be good for Super to be closely associated with the internationally popular Z series or would it be better to present itself as a totally new thing? I guess there's a chance of it happening since it has happened before (with Kai being renamed to Z Kai).

I think something similiar, I mean... How SUPER is a new series if as a matter of fact it does take place during Z? I mean SUPER could be a new thing if was past EoZ, it still feels like DBZ to me

As much as I dislike "Dragon Ball Z Kai," I'll concede that I can kinda sorta maybe possibly understand the logic behind why they renamed it.

Super doesn't need the "Z" for any reason whatsoever. That's not the franchise's name. We can't keep relying on that letter. It's used as part of the title for the television series that adapts manga chapters 195-519. Nothing more. It's annoying enough that people refer to the entire franchise (including the original comics) as "Dragon Ball Z." I'm still irked that they used the "Z" branding for the recent films. The fact that they're reusing the "Z" logo for Super just goes to show how afraid they are to let go. They need to let go. We need to let go. We need to move on.

I'd love to see that. EOZ/GT goku gi is easily my favorite outfit goku wore over the course of the show.

Depending on where Super ends, maybe? At the end of Z, according to Viz, Goku said he'd been keeping tabs on Uub, So if it ends right before the Uub stuff in Z, maybe we could finish Super with Goku putting on that dogi and sensing uub for the first time? I dunno.

The Nine Star Dragon Ball stuff comes from the cover page of the manga. There is a nine star dragon ball on that page but at this point it could just be a error in the artwork.
