Who does the best modern DB Score?

Post by Black_Liger » Sat Jun 20, 2015 5:29 pm

So it's time to see who's the man. please don't mention Kikuchi, since the thread is about Modern dbz. (Post DBGT if you prefer).

The contestants are.

Kenji "The Copy Cat" Yamamoto, With good game soundtracks and 30 megatons of plagiarized material.

Example of his plag-talent:

Victor's Dance

The next one is

Hiroshi "Puuri Kyu" Takaki. With arguably the best orchestrated works after Kikuchi-sensei, but can't do shit for the series because he's too busy Pretty Curing stuff.

Example of his Cure-ness.

Cell's Autodestruction:

Our final contestant is.

Norihito "the go to but please don't" Sumitomo. Who's greatest asset is that he can suck so much but kick unreal amounts a lot of ass when he wants too.

Example of his Sumitomo-ness:

Yamamoto's scores, plagiarized or not, are hands down better than all the others here. By a mile. By lightyears.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Not sure if it counts, but i really like Tokunaga's more modern sounding GT score. I actually think he might have been influenced by the synthesized music in the English dub at the time, seeing as GT was from around 96-97, the same time FUNi's original dub was starting out. I haven't heard much of Sumitomo and Yamamoto doesn't even deserve the dignity of being mentioned.

If I were to look at this objectively and had to look beyond the plagiarism of Yamamoto, I'd say his score for Kai was the best modern score for Dragon Ball.

Bruce Faulconer or Tokunaga's score for GT

Tokunaga's score, hands down. Tokunaga's score for GT is fantastic. Faulconer's score was only good for the period that DBZ aired in the US, and most of his score hasn't aged well. I don't think I would have wanted him to return in GT. Not that Mark Menza was any better, but I don't think Faulconer's style of music would have been fitting for the show.

Thanks for your opinions, But Bruce faulconer and Tokunaga do not qualify, like I said in my first post "Post DBGT" Composers. :P

I think I'll go for Takaki, his score is grand, menacing, warm, anything you need it to be. I would have not mind at all if he was Super's composer. :P

Considering the fact that Yamamoto plagiarized other scores to did his work, I'll go with Takaki.

Sumitomo is good too, but I really prefer Takaki.

I highly (highly, I say!) doubt many, if any of the Japanese production staff was aware or even cared about the fledgling American dub of Z that was just getting underway in '96/'97. Maybe licensors, but not composers. Especially if they were working on GT, the sequel series, which makes the Z dub really irrelevant, since it's based on a previous product Tokunaga has no involvement with.

Now it could be argued once the American version did extremely well around '99-'03 and established Dragon Ball as a "hit" in the States, then maybe the Japanese production staff paid more attention to the actual content of the American localization. I mean, it might have been an influence on Sumitomo's style of composition for Kai, but that could also be a by-product of American interest/co-funding.

That FUNimation/Ocean production of DBZ "Seasons 1 & 2" is a fun curiosity at best, and a relic best left in the past as worst.

As for a decent "modern" DB composer. I do think Sumitomo has the potential for greatness, but his style tends to be more ambient and less melodic/theme-based. I'd have to give it to Yamamoto for my vote. Yes, the man is a plagiarist, and got what he deserved for it... But I can still remember and hum most of his compositions for Kai and the older games. He had a damn good ability to take music from multiple sources, and re-arrange them to fit into a "Dragon Ball" atmosphere.
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

For all of Yamamoto's plagiarism and fishy behavior, his soundtracks have that unmistakable Dragon Ball feel, especially of Z-era Dragon Ball. He really gets the spirit of the series and it comes across in his music. I'm disappointed that he turned out to be such a ripoff.

This is a real toughie for me but I prefer both yamamoto and sumitomo. Yamamoto because well I grew up with the Budokai trilogy and vastly enjoyed that music counting his infinite world and burst limit music. I was so psyched when he came back from kai and the music floored me once in a while I would hum a track on my mind from kai even if his work is infringed I still enjoy it. Sumitomo when I first got to hear his music in bog it blew me away considering the style was so different than what I had previously heard in the franchise. Certain tracks that I heard in the movie my mind instantly linked them to a moment in the anime. An example struggling against a god = goku's first ssj transformation. His kai score on the other hand had to grow on me considering it sounded so cheap but the more I listened and used it the more I grew to love it
So all an all both yamamoto and sumitomo

I would've included takaki but I've only heard the ultimate Tenkaichi tracks, plan to eradicate the super saiyans and a few others but even then that's not enough tracks to make an impact on me
