Is Beerus' existence really necessary?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

You're really not gonna go and say that Goku's out of character in BoG, the Dragon Ball material that nails his characterization the best, right? Goku deemed Boo evil and didn't think Beerus was, that's it.
In your ant analogy, we aren't even aware we're killing them. Beerus is fully aware of his actions. He may see everyone as inferior to the point we see bugs, but what separates him from Freeza? The Kaioshin never did anything against him either. Hell, Beerus even grew to like him at one point for his planetary destruction. So why is one considered "neutral" while the other is evil?
Then consider a mosquito stinging you. It makes you pissed, right? You probably killed a few mosquitoes in your life, don't lie to me. What makes you different then Beerus? Don't go around and throw the excuse that Beerus kills intelligent life because that's not the point. The point is that mosquitoes are below you and I just like every other being, besides the Kaioshin, is below Beerus, since he's kind of the single most important being in the universe.

What separates him from Freeza is that Freeza is an arrogant cunt that THINKS he's above everyone else. Beerus actually IS.

What about the rest of the group, then? They seemed pretty chill around Beerus in the recent movie, relying on his protection and all. You could even classify Beerus and Bulma as friends.

Remember the look of fear as he watched Cell gaining the upper hand against Gohan in a beam struggle that would result in the destruction of their planet? I miss those days. :|

Chill. Mosquitoes actually bring harm to me and others. If I'm not mistaken, they're considered the most dangerous insect on the planet. You don't know the struggle I deal with in mosquito-populated areas. O_O

Nobody does anything to Beerus. If he has no choice but to kill them because of a schedule, okay. But manipulating them into giving him food before he does so, or destroying a planet that didn't need to be destroyed because he got slightly upset they ran out of pudding? All I'm saying is he should be fired. I'm not questioning the role of God of Destruction. I'm questioning the actions of a grumpy cat named Beerus, who happens to hold the position for now.

He had no look of fear on his face, not in the manga at least. He was composed and helping Gohan the entire time.

Goku has been portrayed exactly the same from the beginning of the manga until now, nothing is different. Just because you grew up with a slightly different version of him and prefer that version, doesn't mean you can call the current Goku different :/

Oh? And how many times has Earth caused danger to the universe? All of the universe's most powerful beings, except two, live there. The androids, created on Earth, were more powerful than Freeza, a galactic tyrant, and if Cell succeeded, he would destroy the universe.

Let's be honest here. When you kill a mosquito, are you thinking that you saved millions of lives because it could have transmitted a dangerous disease? Well, possibly, but it's most likely an after-thought. You killed a mosquito because it pissed you off. Likewise, Beerus could have destroyed Earth because they pissed him off and THEN he could pat himself in the back that he did good because all of those dangerous beings could have been a trouble to the universe, even though, there's a 1% chance they, like that mosquito you killed, actually were.
Nobody does anything to Beerus.
They piss him off.

Boo destroys planets because he feels like it. Freeza destroys planets because they may pose a danger. Beerus destroys planets just like any of us kill or hurt any animal that makes us mad. He says it himself "If nothing makes me mad, I'll leave them alone", unless they're scheduled for destruction. That's not evil, if he was evil, he would destroy the planets anyway, even if they didn't piss him off.

Again, not seeing the problem. You're trying to hold Beerus to a human standard of morality. You can't do that. He's above that.

I mean, you can take the Judeo-Christian-Islamic God, Zeus, Minerva, etc, etc, and if you hold them to a 21st century American (going by your location in your profile) standard of morality, they're all going to come across as massive jerks. You are trying to drag down a higher being to a lower standard of morality. It doesn't work.

Beerus does what he wants, and is totally in the right to do what he wants, because the universe has ordained him in the right to do what he wants, so long as he fulfills his purpose.

I thought we've established that "gods" in DBZ are just species with a job. Beerus just happens to also be very strong in comparison to other "gods" because he was trained, like any Z fighter, by a master. Goku could be God of Destruction if he wanted to, as Whis implied, and I doubt he'd do the things Beerus does or abuse his authority because he's above everyone.

The Greek God of Destruction was Ares, and he was feared by mortals and hated by the Olympians for his violent, chaotic ways. Zeus outright says "I hate you worst of all the Gods. Were you not my own son, you are so destructive by now you would be chained with the Titans."

Gods of Destruction have never been considered 'good', even by the standards of ancient mythologies. The DB world, currently, is a mythology where Ares rules Olympus. Which is pretty horrifying.

Well, no. But you don't know how many people the mosquito stung before you killed it, do you?

And... they harmed Beerus... I have this strange feeling that you think Beerus tried to blow up Earth JUST because of the pudding thing. Beerus asked for the pudding a bunch of times, then what does Boo do? Lick all the pudding cups. Beerus asks for the pudding AGAIN, and what does Boo do? Threaten to turn him to candy and then tries to attack him. Beerus defends himself and then ALL of the other members of the Dragon Team try to attack him. I consider that as "harm", don't you?

And yet that doesn't stop Kaio and Piccolo from worshiping Kaioshin and thinking he's above them. If the role of the God of Destruction is anything like the Kaio and Kaioshin, then he was literally born for the job.

And that job puts them above people. If Goku became the God of Destruction, he could perform the job in any manner he so chose, just like Beerus does. And how does Beerus "abuse" his authority? He isn't beholden to normal standards of ethics and morality. He's above all that.

And, as Doctor said, it's not like Earth is by any means a "safe" place. Some of the biggest threats in the universe either were born there, or created there, imprisoned there, or live there.

He was feared and hated, but, to my knowledge, no mortal ever told him that he was wrong for being who he was or tried to change him. For all the hatred Zeus bore for him, the never tried to make him not be War. There is a difference between fellow gods casting judgement on a peer, as opposed to mortals doing the same thing.

I don't. But they bring me pain. So. Much. PAIN.

Beerus was threatening to blow the planet up multiple times before that, such as when a bullet accidentally hit his forehead. And no, that did not hurt him. It was the equivalent of someone accidentally hitting someone with a paper ball as they aimed for a trash bin or something.

And yet that doesn't stop Kaio and Piccolo from worshiping Kaioshin and thinking he's above them. If the role of the God of Destruction is anything like the Kaio and Kaioshin, then he was literally born for the job.
Well, they're part of a hierarchy. It's like a king being respected by the prince, and the prince being respected by the subjects. Were they really born to do the job, or did they decide to do it out of their own volition? Feels more like a tradition they created for their own kind (specifically, those born from golden fruits who have longer life spans).
Goku would still have to destroy planets, so no, he wouldn't keep his morale at all. And if he lived long enough for it, all of the planets would soon be inhabited and he'd have to kill innocent life.
Well, I meant outside of the role itself. He wouldn't throw petty temper tantrums that lead to planets not scheduled to being destroyed being destroyed, for example. He'd just do his job, but probably also fight the strongest of every planet before doing so. Can't say he'd do a good job, as I can see him sparing planets he shouldn't, but my point is Beerus is just a really strong cat with a job. Goku, a mortal, can have it too. Anybody can replace him, do a better job, and there would be less danger to innocent species and the Kaioshin themselves.

Beerus is definitely a necessary existence in dragon ball. The universe revolves around reincarnation. By blowing up planets Beerus is effectively creating a new supply of souls to be distributed across the remaining worlds in the universe. Otherwise if every spirit is already reincarnated there will be issues in the universe. I would suggest you check out a manga called Spirit Circle. It tackles the whole reincarnation thing quite interestingly. If you follow the ideas that the manga presents then it definitely makes sense to have a being like Beerus to strike a balance for reincarnation in the universe.

Beerus may not be perfect at his job, but he get the main objective of his role done, and that's to destroy planets and maintain universal balance in the Dragon Ball universe. How he goes about it may up for question, but when your role includes the word "destruction" in it, you pretty much have to live up to in many circumstances.

The balance of the universe is predicated upon him and his job, so he's certainly necessary.

And once again, Beerus is NOT evil. He's an entirely neutral force. He doesn't side with good or evil. He does what he does because that's what needs to be done in order to maintain the balance of the universe. Even if he destroyed all planets with no life on them there'd eventually come a time where he'd have to begin destroying the planets with life on them. Destroying planets is a necessity with his job as planets must be destroyed before new ones can be created. There's a reason he has the title God of Destruction. Call him impulsive, arrogant, etc. but don't call him evil because he certainly isn't.

Wasn't it because Goku was surprised he decided to suddenly use ranged-attacks as opposed to melee-attacks, leading to Goku's Kamehameha in space.

Yes, but Beerus using blasts signifies that his intent was serious. It's no surprise that Beerus after that says "This isn't a game" and Goku retorts with "Stop enjoying destruction". It's clear that Goku was made not because Beerus started using blast attacks so suddenly, but because those attacks could potentially destroy the Earth.

Frankly I'm astonished someone is only bringing this up just now. Battle of Gods totally had that entirely unintentional black comic air of "Sinners in the paws of an angry, self-obsessed, petty cat man"; it is from the same stock as the neglect of Kaioshin's and Goku's placing passing the torch over killing Buu.

They can't. The beings will reproduce and eventually there are too many souls in the living and not enough in the Other World to be reincarnated. Considering the cycle of life in DBZ, death and destruction are actually necessary for the universe to continue.

If Japanese super heRo shows like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider have taught me anything. Is that all life is equal. We are not above animals. I've even stopped killing bugs and instead release them outside.
Anyway Lord Beers is needed because of his job. Is he needed as a anti hero? That's the real question.

i often read here that Beerus is not bound to moral standards because he is a god and above all mortal beings and stuff like that. first of all, even the gods in dbz are mortal (beerus, kaioshin...). second, it seems to be just a title, whis said to goku he could be the next and goku was born as a normal saiyan baby. beerus was maybe born a normal cat or something. obviosly if you are one of the most powerful in the universe like beerus or goku you could get the job, and would be free of moral boundries? in my opinion if that would be the case it would just be the right of the strongest, and whoever the strongest is can do whatever he wants.
