Comet Library = Phil Collins?

Post by Tweaker » Fri Jun 26, 2015 12:42 am

First off, I apologize in advance if anyone has pointed this out before.

I found an interesting similarity between "Comet Library" from the Complete Song Collections and another song: Phil Collins' track "Father to Son."

Comet Library
Father to Son

It's not an exact copy or anything, but despite the different key the similarities in chord progression (outside of where they clearly deviate, of course), general soundscape (the pads, the minimalist percussion, the general rhythm--shaker pattern included) and the strikingly similar guitar licks (these are pretty much the same, honestly) were close enough to where, upon hearing the Phil Collins track for the first time a few days ago, I actually did a double take to see what song I was actually listening to. Given Kenji Yamamoto's history of ripping off/taking influence from popular music for his Dragon Ball-related tracks this isn't surprising (though my notion of his involvement in this track is mostly inferred), but I think it's interesting to find what might very well may be another example of this particular phenomenon.

What do you guys think? Am I jumping the gun a bit? Am I the only one who hears this?

The song was composed Chiho Kiyo’oka. Yamamoto only arranged it.

However, it seems that even in tracks that were only arranged by Yamamoto, there's bound to be some similarities. For example, after Toei gave Yamamoto the boot, people began to complain quite a bit about the Zyuranger theme sounding too much like Jerry Goldsmith's Total Recall theme. And that one, too, was only arranged by Yamamoto.

Speaking of which, was Mind Power... Ki..., which Kiyo’oka composed and Yamamoto arranged, blatantly stolen from Brad Fidel's Terminator theme?

I don't hear that, but that song also resembles African Symphony.
