I don't know of any fanbase that's as nit-picky as the Dragon Ball fanbase, which is really unexpected, considering how almost every other episode of Dragon Ball Z has crappy, off model animation.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I think the Ultimate Blast opening was the best Dragon Ball was ever animated. It's only helped that the director of that opening allowed the key animators to do their own storyboard without Yamamuro's touch-up. I can only hope that director Chioka will let veteran animators do their own storyboard for Dragon Ball Super without his interference.AjayLikesGaming wrote:You only have to look at his work on the Ultimate Tenkaichi intro so see that!

To me, at least, it doesn't really look like Vegeta because his face is too high on his head. His eyebrows should be a bit further down, closer to aligning with his sideburns. As such, his jaw/face outline would need to be reworked as well (something I don't really have the skills to do and retain the integrity of the image).

Yes! You nailed it. Face height is exactly what it was. Always amazes me how such little things make such a big difference.TheDevilsCorpse wrote:To me, at least, it doesn't really look like Vegeta because his face is too high on his head.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Here's my attempt at correcting that Vegeta shot (my correction is on the left):

I used some Z screenshots as a reference point.
What I did was lowered his eyes and nose a bit, and centered them better. I also repositioned his mouth, since it wasn't quite aligned, and I redid the wrinkle to be under his mouth, since more upset reactions in Z tended to place that wrinkle there to show more of a grimace. I redid the cheekbone shading, and I completely redrew his nose, since it was too trangular, short and simplified, and I also pulled in and sharpened his jawline. I extended the wrinkles under his eyes and added shading to the edge, since that was they tended to look in the Buu arc, and I also extended his upper brow wrinkle slightly. I extended his hair since it was way too short, and also added a few strands. I also eliminated that plastic shine, since it just looks bad, as well as the hair shading, since it looked to much like plastic. I also drew in his ear lobe and I also extended some lines in his ear, since it looked incomplete and mushy originally.
I'd like to think I covered everything.

I think that the people who are so bent on having great animation at every turn just shouldn't watch Super. Don't watch something you aren't going to enjoy if the animation is the only thing that's important to you.UpFromTheSkies wrote: considering how almost every other episode of Dragon Ball Z has crappy, off model animation.
As you said, Dragon ball has never had spectacular animation so people should just take it or leave it. The series will have talented key animators working on it at some points so as long as the characters aren't off-model it shouldn't be too big of an issue. It's not like Dragon ball characters ever do anything outside of actual combat to deserve spectacular animation. That's why everything aside from the fight scenes in BoG look painfully average even though it's a movie.
I understand the desire for great animation, but we already know what to expect. The trailer only showed small clips from just 1 episode anyways.

What is with all of these strawmans? Who here said that all they care about is the animation? Besides, what's wrong with criticizing the animation? Why should we be happy with every aspect of everything?UpFromTheSkies wrote:I don't know of any fanbase that's as nit-picky as the Dragon Ball fanbase, which is really unexpected, considering how almost every other episode of Dragon Ball Z has crappy, off model animation.
I also disagree with this. I feel that Dragon Ball has had plenty of excellent cuts of animation when talented artists were involved. As you said, Dragon ball has never had spectacular animation so people should just take it or leave it. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
The animation to me looks fine so far. It looks and feels like Dragon Ball. It does not look like a cheap direct to video animation like Little Cars or something made in Kids Pix like 12 oz. Mouse. Super could look much worst.

I like your correction a lot
Vegeta in BoG always looked different and not so good to me, I think the hair was the main problem but those shines also took part in it
The nose is also a good change

I never accused anyone here in particular of "only caring about animation".Metalwario64 wrote:Who here said that all they care about is the animation?
To start off, I never mentioned this or any forum in my post.
Besides, what's wrong with criticizing the animation? Why should we be happy with every aspect of everything?
I didn't chastise anyone for criticizing the animation and I didn't say you had to feel happy about anything either.
Besides, I disagree with your last point. Dragon Ball has had plenty of excellent cuts of animation when talented artists were involved.
I've never claimed otherwise. I was saying that the overall animation of the series wasn't spectacular and this isn't a false statement.
As a helpful suggestion, maybe you should analyse a post first to avoid putting words in peoples mouths in the future.

I wouldn't apologise. I think it's fundamentally clear what the undertones of these posts are when they're plastered right in the middle of a pleasant conversation about the little details of recent animation. They're unnecessary and antagonising, and I don't think anyone appreciates them.
On the off chance I'm mistaken, please consider how that stuff comes across.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I meant that specific sentence. That one was targeted at UpFromTheSkies, because I inferred from his statement that we should just be happy with what we've got. I don't like the mindset that we should be happy with everything because we're lucky to be getting anything. If I am mistaken on their intent, then I do apologize.AjayLikesGaming wrote:I wouldn't apologise. Anyhow, I probably shouldn't have partaken in any of these arguments, because it's just diverting attention away from my take on that image that I posted.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I'm really not a fan of the curret animation we are seeing in Dragon Ball. Everything just seems off, the characters don't quite look like themselves anymore. Their hair is usally too short, their face shape doesn't look right, a lot of the characters look too thin, and i don't think they blend in well with the backgrounds like they used to. Either CGI animation doesn't work for Dragon Ball or it's just not being done right. I personally think it's just not being done right because the two videos you posted above looks more like how Dragon Ball should be done now.shinmaru wrote: I liked the Ultimate Tenkaichi opening animation, especially the dark coloring tones they used https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PHyGPjlk8k Some of heroes PV where good too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL5ff_yQHZw
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Hotdog, do I love how Shida drew Super Saiyan 3 Gokuu in One Piece #590. It's completely off model yet so thoroughly expressive. That's the face of someone summoning all of their tension forth and throwing it at their foe.
I don't expect great animation all around but it certainly would be nice to have a good animator handle important moments.
