A serious accident during the original broadcast of DB

Post by kei17 » Sun Jun 28, 2015 2:37 pm

I've recently found out an interesting accident that happened during the original broadcast of DB episode 79 in Japan. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuYgh7Wmei8

This happened on September 16th, 1987. Fuji TV mistakenly set a film reel of Mission: Impossible which was planned to air on the same day instead of the one that contains episode 79 of Dragon Ball.

The opening to Mission: Impossible starts.

They notice it and turn it off after only nine seconds.

"Observe the traffic rules"

"Please wait for a while"

"We are terribly sorry, but please wait for a while"

After one and half minutes, the opening to DB finally starts (mistakenly with the optical audio.)

However, it gets cut short and the commercials start airing on schedule.

After the title card, an apology for the accident appears on the screen. "We apologize for the unsightly part at the beginning of the program."

I watched the video. As far as differences between this original broadcast and Dragon Box copies go, the film print quality is about the same, though the original broadcast looks kinda dark.

I love little things like this. Such a neat little history tidbit.

Mission Imporssible? Like, the Tom Cruise movie?

I thought that was made in the 90's! But its interesting. Its like the Heidi Games of DB.

Reminds me of that one time when GT was airing on Toonami for the first time and during the episode where Goku and Rildo begin their fight, they accidentally showed the Japanese title card.

I remember thinking "Wow, this fight must be serious" if they're showing the Japanese version.

Wow, that is so surreal. If it's any consolation, that episode is kind of dull.

Also, has that instrumental of the OP ever been released?

A quick Google search would reveal to you that there was a 60s TV series.

When the picture turns gray, and you increase volume you hear voices in the background.

That was funny. The whole time I'm watching this, I'm just thinking, "Yeah, somebody definitely got fired that day..."
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Misleading Title. I thought about darker things.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota

I actually knew that existed. But I thought it was too old to get broadcasted on such a prime slot. Ok that's a lie, I did know it existed but I forgot long enough to put that stupid comment lol.

Used to see stuff like this all the time, screwups by the station, film unavailable, transmission forced off the air due to storms, etc. they usually used some neat title cards to explain the situation, many of them having to do with the program in question. I used to get these things because my contact was making recordings in Nagasaki and not Tokyo...

Another thing that was neat was the advertising end of show title cards. Dunno if I have any examples handy but I'll have to check for DB, DBZ and GT sometime.

Not a Trek or Gerry Anderson fan then? Leonard Nimoy, Martin Landau and Barbara Bain (Landau's wife) appeared in the old 60s show...
