"Dragon Ball Super" Animation Staff Discussion

Random note: Dragon Ball Super Episode #1 is the first Dragon Ball Episode #1 since the 1986 series to not have new key animation from Shida Naotoshi. Damn, broke the record too soon!

September or October should see a few other animators become available. With Episode of Sabo airing in August I'm sure there's a plethora of animators unavailable.

I wish they weren't doing another "Episode of" so soon after Super started. I do like OP, but it's stuff like this that makes me resent Toei for consistently biting off more than they can chew. I liked Luffy's flashback arc, but there's no way I'll be able to enjoy Episode of Sabo knowing it's sucking away skilled resources that could go to Super.

But Toei is a huge studio, some animation houses go to hell if they try to make three short series at once. It would've been worse if the One Piece special was a movie, these ones are not that big to do such damage, even the One Piece anime is doing well lately, and i believe Super will be above it in their priorities list.

As for Naotoshi Shida, we have to take into account that he is naturally a more experienced and skillful key animator now than he was 30 or 20 years ago, so there was no reason to waste him so soon, especially when the little action the first episode had was done in a competent enough way.

I was so relieved when I found out the One Piece announcement wasn't a movie.

Actually I do have some hope for people being freed up because:

2) Only 1/3rd of this year's annual Precure Movie is going to be 2D animation; the other 2/3rds will be CGI.

The thing about Shida is that he never seems to do anything interesting with his storyboards, which probably means he is merely doing exactly what the episode director wants him to do. Hopefully Mikami will let him do something interesting.

It's always possible, upcoming episodes for those other series don't wind up having a lot of their action animators used. With any luck we'll see Tate Naoki, Takahashi Yuuya, Hayashi Yuuki, and Watanabe Koudai, all of which who worked on the Opening animation. Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi so sporadically works anywhere that it isn't impossible that we might see him turn up, too, although I'm not sure I'd call him that interesting an animator. Hopefully the animation supervisor is good and we don't keep getting stuck with junk like Episodes #1-3.

I'm almost certain that's the ssj3 fight, but I could be wrong.

Toma Seizo was the animation supervisor for Disk Wars: Avengers Episode #27, which was storyboarded by Chioka Kimitoshi. Episode #27 looked very good, so hopefully the same can be said for Episode #4.

My guess is that the first Beerus vs. Goku fight happens on Kaiou's planet like in BoG, though, since that is where Goku is training. These three episodes seem to be retelling the establishing shots of BoG -- Beerus discussing SSG with Whiz, the side plot with the Pilaf Gang, and then Goku meeting Beerus for the first time.

I guess the BoG saga will end in ep 12 or so. Now I guess DBS will have at least 50eps or probably more.

That's exactly what is going on. I doubt the rematch will occur during Blooma's birthday again, though. Then again, maybe Episode #2 will reveal that Blooma has a birthday coming up? Eh, we'll see.

I think the Pilaf shenenigans will be about them acquiring the DBs and wishing for youth. I doubt they're gonna re-do the party, it would get boring fast.

Maybe it will happen at the resort vacation? Bulma's birthday is in August, and if it is 6 months after the Tenkaichi Budokai, it would be closer to November/December, unless they are just not being precise with dates at all.
