Is there a heavy Goku focus?(Manga/anime, new material)
This came to my mind after reading some comments in an anime forum, about Dragon Ball Super. I read that some people are expecting that this time Goku doesnt become the entierer focus of the show or steals the spotlight of other characters, like in the second half of the series.
To me that claim is strange, from my POV, Goku started to lose some focus as the plot progressed (though he would show up for the big fights).
I ask you DBFanbase, how true is that ? Because for me, thats not at all in the slightless.

Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Dragonball Part 1 is Goku's story. Everything centered around Goku. However as the story progress the story became central around Saiyans. Where every Saiyan had a moment to spotlight with themselves. Gohan, Vegeta, Trunks, and later Gotenks(The kids even had 2 movies to themselves). So DBZ you can arguably say is the story of the remaining Saiyans.

I echo the thought of TheGmGoken in that the story prior to the Saiyan arc was essentially focused on Goku, but I'd say even when the first half of Dragon Ball focused on Goku, from the Red Ribbon Army arc onwards, I'd say Dragon Ball had more of an ensemble cast, which truly became quite more obvious once the Saiyan arc started and many new characters were introduced.

Well, it was probably like the first part of Dragonball.

The pre-Z stuff, yeah, but as soon as Z itself started, it was a rotating ensemble. Gokû was constantly being taken out of the picture (by a variety of methods). I'd argue he's not even the full focus in BOG because he vanishes for the entire middle of the movie where it kind of becomes Vegeta's job to main character for a while. F was more an ensemble movie on the whole.
With Super, it's too early to tell. I actually think we won't really know until we hit that new "Universe 6" arc.

On hiatus.

As the story went on, Toriyama felt less and less inclined to make Goku "the guy", to the point that Gohan actually was supposed to be the main character for the Buu arc and for the first chunk of it was, but Toriyama thought it felt too weird, and that's why for the second half of that arc Goku comes back to spotlight.
Re: Is there a heavy Goku focus?(Manga/anime, new material)
Yeah, everything before Z was pretty much Goku's show. While other characters did start to shine by the time the Saiyajins arrived and Goku was definitely not entire focus, He did always seem to swoop in to steal the spotlight most of the time.
The humans could barely stand a chance against Nappa, while Goku comes in and defeats him, no problem.
Reccoome was tossing around Vegeta, Gohan and Krillin like ragdolls, then Goku swoops in and and easily takes out him and the rest of the GF.
Same thing with Frieza pretty much.
By the time the android and Cell arcs came, it looked like they were finally letting other characters shine even more and gave them major power ups, or character development, and even let Gohan be the one to defeat Cell.
And while he was kind of absent during the Buu arc, he did come in for the final kill. It seemed at first as if Gohan or Gotenks would be the one to beat Buu, or even Vegito, but Goku ended up being the guy to kill him in the end.
But lately it seems he has to be the one to defeat the main villain.
In the 08 Special, he had to come in and kill AboCado(for some reason) instead of Goten and Trunks handling it, since it was supposed to be their fight.
And of course in RF, they could've just had Vegeta kill Frieza, but no, Goku had to be the one take him out.
With these in mind, you can't blame him, because he is the main character after all, but some of these could've been handled better, instead of him stealing the battle from the others at the last moment, or even him defeating the villain by himself at all. Especially in the recent specials/movies.

Even if Goku shows up for the final battle or takes the kill(but remained abcent before that) i still fail to see how that = Goku having to much focus/stealing spotlight.

Even in OG Dragonball, there were the Tournaments where everybody else got to show off their skills. Where is the Krillin vs Majunior fight in this new Godku era?
The only thing the notgokus get to do since Z ended is get oneshotted then stand on the sidelines wiggling their faces as Godku does everything.

That's not true.
They also give him their energy and call his name for help when he's not around.

Vegeta vs. Beerus, mayhaps?Rocketman wrote:Where is the Krillin vs Majunior fight in this new Godku era?
At any rate, they're movies. In fact, we know Toriyama's original script for Battle of Gods (much of which had to be cut down, due to restrictions) included a scene at the climax where the whole Dragon Team gets to put in a helping hand vs. Beerus. Stay tuned for Super.

With Super being a series that'll run for at least 2 years they'll probably take more risks with the story and other characters' roles in a similar way to Z as apposed to a movie which is a one time thing.
Don't be surprised if he does in Super cause the risk of having someone other then the main character kill the main villain is smaller in a long running series then it is in a movie.Makai wrote:

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Goku is a fictional character, he can't steal a spotlight. Toriyama chooses to focus on his main character.
