Jump Super Stars cover art - an original, or touched up?

Post by Tyro » Sun Jul 19, 2015 4:19 am

My late night internet wanderings brought me across Jump Super Stars, a game I've never gotten to play but always wanted to. I was looking over the cover art, and I just had this feeling that I've seen this picture of Goku before. So I flip open Daizenshuu #1. Nope, not there. Then I flip open the Chogashuu. Nope, not there either. Aright, to the manga then. Success! It looks like it's from the last panel in chapter #306. But he has a full head of hair on the game cover. Whatever, no big- Wait. He has legs too. (Larger image.)

That's a lot of work to go through just to be able to use this one picture of Goku, isn't it? I mean there's like a million other full-color, full-body shots they could have chosen. And I just can't get over how nice the line work is for the parts that have been added to the original image. This is some top-quality work. There's no chance this is a Toriyama original, is there? It's just so nice that it's got me questioning myself. It probably isn't, but hey, it's interesting.

I dunno, the added sections don't really feel that much like Toriyama to me. the coloring doesn't seem like his either. Definitely done in an attempt to mimic his style though.
