Rank these screenshots in terms of picture quality

Post by Kakacarrottop » Thu Jul 23, 2015 1:49 am

How would you rank these 4 screenshots (of the same scene) in terms of picture quality?

2006 Ultimate Uncut Edition DVD screenshot

2008 Double Feature DVD screenshot

For me it would go: UUE > RTD > Big Green > DF. The Ultimate Uncut screenshot (which looks identical to the Pioneer DVD) seems the most natural looking to me, despite all the obvious edge enhancement and such. The RTD set screenshot sort of looks like a brighter, poorly encoded duplicate of it. The Big Green dub screenshot makes the film seem like its from the 60s or something, although i think it still looks better than the oversaturated Double Feature screenshot.

Well, only the Ultimate Uncut screenshot seems to have been taken properly, so it's not really a fair comparison.

Ultimate Uncut looks the best one there, but why do the others look so blurry?

Okay, in hope of making it a somewhat more even comparison, i just re-uploaded the "Ultimate Uncut" shot in the same quality as the other 3. I still think it's the best looking one.

The screenshot from the Ultimate Uncut edition looks the best, hands down.

None of these appear to be taken properly, so there's no point in making any judgement call beyond pointing out the rainbowing in the Big Green version.

There is no reason a DVD screen shot should be taller than 480 pixels (well, maybe with a PAL encode you could make an argument, but still...). You're stretching/resizing at some point along the way, and if you're doing that, Dende only knows what else is happening along the way.

It was at first, but as he posted above, he screwed with the picture quality and edited it into his post to make it a "fair" comparison (which it still isn't, at all).

I have taken comparison shots, but Imgur won't let me upload anything right now for some reason... :eh:

Hey, can we also use the Dragon Box version for comparison?

This one easily looks the best from my point of view.

Image

The Big Green DVD looks pretty dark and faded, UUE and RTD editions look okay, and the 2008 DVD looks DNR'd.

Add the anamorphic tag when you're capping the Dragon Box. It's supposed to be tiltscanned to 16:9.

No, why would it? It's fiction. The strength of the characters is not possible to reach in reality.
I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Just for good measure, I wonder if anyone could also throw in Japanese laserdisc for comparison?
