Compendium of Viz Manga Edits?
Let me preface this by asking forgiveness for my ignorance if something like this exists and is easily found or if I just need to better use the forum's search function (I swear I did a fair amount of scouring before creating this thread).
I've planned on getting the Dragon Ball kanzenban for some time (and certainly still plan on buying them) but I've also come to the conclusion that it would be nice to have copies of the manga in my native language as well. I'd always had qualms about the English language releases and just resigned myself to the idea that I'd have to stick with the animation until a truly uncut edition was released. But, while perusing at my local comic shop, I happened to stumble upon copies of the VizBig editions and decided to look through them. There was something special about finally seeing Goku reach Super Saiyan 3 in Toriyama's original marks. So, because nothing is ever perfect in life, I've decided to just stop being a baby and pick up something like the VizBig editions. But, in order to still quench my thirst for a perfect release, I was just wondering if there is any kind of online compendium of censorship or alterations in the Viz releases so I can identify them while obsessively pouring over the manga. As I say, this is kinda goofy, but I figure that if this is the sort of thing that keeps me working through legal channels than it can't be all that bad.

These are the ones I know off the top of my head: Mr. Popo's lips are censored to be smaller; "Vegerot" (which is supposed to be Vegetto); and "Dijinn Boo". I'm sure someone else can provide you with other differences.
I tend not to post here anymore because what I say doesn't add to the conversation.

First off, welcome to the forum! I look forward to reading your posts and seeing your contributions!
Herms posted a list of "Manga Review of Awesomeness" podcast episodes where he went into "Viz-isms" on his excellent "Collection of Information Awesomeness" thread.

Other than that, I'm not really sure...

Thanks so much! And, that whole thread and the various linked ones look perfect. May not cover all volumes but it's a whole, whole lot better than nothing.DoomieDoomie911 wrote:First off, welcome to the forum! I look forward to reading yours posts and seeing your contributions!![]()

Djinn is a perfectly valid translation for Majin. Also, Vegerot follows the original intent of combining Kakarotto and Vegeta's name, only in Viz its Kakarot (which follows the pun of carrot better in english) instead of Kakarotto.ThatGuyNamedChancey wrote:These are the ones I know off the top of my head: Mr. Popo's lips are censored to be smaller; "Vegerot" (which is supposed to be Vegetto); and "Dijinn Boo". If one wanted a true compendium of all the edits Viz made to the Dragon Ball manga, you'd have to take into account all of the art they had to redraw when they altered the speech bubbles and localized the SFX.

Yeah, I guess what I really should've asked was where I can find accurate translations of the tankobon/kanzenban that I can just compare to the Viz release. And then when I finally get around to picking up the kanzenban I'll have everything I could possibly need. If this sort of request is off limits I understand, though.Tyro wrote:If one wanted a true compendium of all the edits Viz made to the Dragon Ball manga, you'd have to take into account all of the art they had to redraw when they altered the speech bubbles and localized the SFX.

Fan translations of things that have an official translation are against the rules. Besides, fan translations are usually terrible and not to be trusted. They'd likely be as off as Viz's translation, just in different ways.
As for the censorship to the visuals and dialogue, it varies from release to release, and from printing to printing. I tried to make a complete guide, but I didn't receive much help. Maybe once the wiki is ready I can try again.
