What up with the grumpy old men trying to poke holes in my balloon. Leave me something to hope for in the future. I hear what yall saying: "Street Fighter", "Super Mario Brother", "Mortal Kombat Annihilation", "Double Dragon", "Daredevil", "Elektra", "Hulk", blah, blah, blah, blah, blah ...
They have nothing to do with "Untitled Dragonball/Dragonball Z Adaptation." You can't judge a movie that doesn't even have a script, director, actor, producer, or anything truly solid yet. Heck, it's not even sure if the movie will even be coming out at all.
Just leave us hopefuls alone with this one. It's not like we're gonna have another anime series. Let us be with and I can guarantee you one of three outcomes: first, there is no Dragonball movie and your happy. Second, it gets made and it's a steaming pile of excrement, and you're happy because you were right. Or lastly, it gets made and it's actually good and we get quite a few sequels.
Now, to address a couple of things that were brought up. As pertains to the actors, it probabbly won't be a bunch of Americans. Why? Look at all the other successful comic/books movies and you'll see that most of the characters are played by British, Australian, and mostly non-Americans. I, myself, don't need to see Hollywood A and B list celebs in the movie unless they could really add something to it.
And with regards to story changes, unless the the Japanese themselves develop this you would have to be a complete fool to think that it will retain everything from the manga and anime. Somethings wouldn't be possible and others just wouldn't make any sense to keep. And time wise, we get 2 - 3 hours a flick not four to five hundred episode worth. A lot of things will be dropped and changed.
And, finally (at least for right now) the choreography. You really don't expect them to have everyone fightinging at super hyper speed, do you? There may be times when they show it from the perspective of a normal person who would see a bunch of blurs. But the majority of the time they will show it at a speed that the action can be properly viewed.
It's easy to focus on the very sub-par movies that have come out and put a bad taste in people's mouths. I like that someone has mentioned Charmed, because there are a good number of live-action sci fi/fantasy shows that have similar Dragonball-like qualities which lead me to beleive that it can be done and be done decently.
Disclaimer: This post isn't to be taken as fact. It is the exspressed opinion of one semi-delusional Dragonball fan. It is not neccesarily the view of everyone on the forum. So no jumping down on someone for their own opinion.

Which is probaly a good indication that it won't happen. You can't judge a movie that doesn't even have a script, director, actor, producer, or anything truly solid yet.
Yet people act like it's a definite thing that it will happen.Heck, it's not even sure if the movie will even be coming out at all.
There's a better chance for that, then there is for a live action movie. It's not like we're gonna have another anime series.
Why would anyone be happy if it sucked?Second, it gets made and it's a steaming pile of excrement, and you're happy because you were right.
If it sucked it ruin the chances of future productions, or seriously hurt them.
How many non-Americans were in the first Spider-Man movie?Look at all the other successful comic/books movies and you'll see that most of the characters are played by British, Australian, and mostly non-Americans.
Uhm note that when the Japanese (more specificly TOEI) made a animated movie out of the Red Ribbon Army Saga from DragonBall, they didn't keep everything in, so why are you assuming that they woud? And with regards to story changes, unless the the Japanese themselves develop this you would have to be a complete fool to think that it will retain everything from the manga and anime.
Infact the 10th Anniversary Special was a great start for re-telling the whole series and it's a shame they didn't continue onward with it, ie the 10th Anniversary Special was part of DB done in "movie form" like a movie version of DragonBall, only animated, instead of live-action, and I thought they did a really good job given what all they had to condense.
You know, after a certain number of changes there would be no point in calling it DragonBall anymore. Like if you realisticly think of all the changes that would have to be made for a realistic adaption there's really no point and making it DB unless you just want name recognition. And, finally (at least for right now) the choreography. You really don't expect them to have everyone fightinging at super hyper speed, do you? There may be times when they show it from the perspective of a normal person who would see a bunch of blurs. But the majority of the time they will show it at a speed that the action can be properly viewed.
Well then can you show us some examples (from things like Charmed or whatever) where people are doing anything even close to a Kamehameha type beam or have a Kaioken type aura? It's easy to focus on the very sub-par movies that have come out and put a bad taste in people's mouths. I like that someone has mentioned Charmed, because there are a good number of live-action sci fi/fantasy shows that have similar Dragonball-like qualities which lead me to beleive that it can be done and be done decently.
I think he was refering to The Spirits Within, not Advent Children. Note that he listed Squaresoft and Square-Enix, not one or the other. If you're refering to FF7:Advent Children than you need to watch that movie and look at the complexcity of the models. FF7 Rocks \m/

Re: Dragonball Z live action movie
It's indeed fact.landoku wrote: In 2002 Twentieth Century Fox aquired the rights from Shueisha to create a live action feature film version of Dragonball. (adapted from the manga)
Fact if the interview in which it was said was authentic.•The live action Dragonball film will be overseen by Elizabeth Gabler and Jack Leslie is the director of production. Fox has not yet made public the director.
That's also fact.• Twentieth Century Fox bought the domain dragonballz-movie.com. Recently, at the end of March 2006, the domain expired and Fox did in fact renew it. To view the stats you can go to www.whois.net
Variety reported it, but there has never been any official confirmation. So very probably, hoax.• Variety reports, In 2004 Twentieth Century Fox hired Ben Ramsey (The Big Hit) to ink the screenplay. The trade tips that he was paid $500,000 for the gig.
Again, the magazine said it, but no proof it actually happened.• Wizard Magazine reported that Fox approached Director Alejandro Amenabar (The Sea Inside) to direct the film. He turned down the offer.
Only hearsays.• IGN reported the following in their mailbag:
Question: I heard that the DBZ movie was no longer in production, is that true? Did they stop making the movie?
--Kyle
IGN: Kyle, our contact at 20th Century Fox assures us that the live-action Dragonball Z movie is still in development. However, they had no other updates on the status of the project. Last we heard, the studio had hired a screenwriter to pen a new draft of the script.. that was back in June 2004. Stay tuned.
However, here are facts :
Straight from KyleHebert.com:
I literally JUST got off the phone with FOX Studios in Los Angeles, CA. I asked outright about the upcoming live action Dragonball/Z movie.
This is exactly what I was told by my contact:
"The Dragonball Z movie? We don't have that. I 've got a lot of calls about that so I called around [the studio]. We won't be making that [movie]."
So there you have it, folks. That is the OFFICIAL story from FOX. I know some of you may be disappointed, but I also think it's a blessing.
Here's another article reguarding the movie, by Otherworld Steve:
I decided to follow up a bit more regarding the rumored live action Dragonball/Z movie. One persistant rumor has been that "George Lucas' CGI company ILM has signed a contract to do the special effects."
Today I called Ellen Pasternack, Public Relations for ILM. I asked her if the rumor was true; if ILM was brought on board to provide the special effects for the Dragonball/Z live action movie. Ms. Pasternack's reply was that it had been mentioned, but ILM never officially signed off on anything and it never came to be. She also commented that, as far as she knows, the film is not being made.
Well, she said it.• On September 24, adult film star Asia Carrera stated in the news bulletin section of her personal web site that she had been offered a part in the upcoming Dragonball Z live action movie. The producers had contacted her about a part in the movie(possibly Chi-chi), but she had to turn them down because she and her husband were 4 months pregnant. "I hate having to turn down cool mainstream work offers because I'm too fat to go out and play!!" she said. She plans to name her daughter Catalina.
No proof at all, so hoax.•Per Anime Insider, "Fox secured the rights in 2002 to make a live action movie. With a finished product in 2006. Fox is still promoting script, having placed ads in Hollywood industry trade magazines seeking a director and decribing film as follows: "When a platoon of warriors seek the 7 Dragonballs to call a beast to destroy Earth, a teenage underdog must rise to the occasion to defend his world while coming to grips w/ the fact that a mythical evil resides in him." There is no offical announcements

This thread revived old posts from God knows where. Some sources being from the internet (which is.. yeah). The base of this thread was just based on someone wanting the movie, not anything saying it will come out soon. Everything else that followed were reasons why or why not it should be made. Now, many points were made and I read them (any containing Tom Welling or Transformers weren't taken seriously ;p). So it basically comes down to this, if you've stated your opinion or have no new facts to present, don't post anymore. In fact, this thread should self-destruct and go to hell.
So, no more half-assed examples like the Spiderman movies or even series like Smallville or Charmed (yeah, its "appealing" in a TV show, not in the movies for few hours). I brought up Street Fighter because its elements aren't so different from DragonBall and yes, we learn history for a reason. Could this movie happen? Maybe. Will this thread have any sort of impact. No, not at all. What I will say is, if I see Colin Ferell as Goku may God have mercy on our souls.

......Okay, There were facts that said the movie WAS going to happen and Facts that said it WASN'T. How can you say Folken-sama's post shows it's not going to happen? Do you selectively read peoples post, only seeing what you WANT to see?TAS wrote:I think the info Folken-sama provided in his post pretty much shows the movie isn't going to happen. So I guess that's it then, just gotta accept the facts.
I think the point was that the facts that are most recent and most verifiable point to no, unlikely, or not any time soon. Though the fact that we have a 5 page argument about it says something.
Death is a big deal in a lot of movies in the genre that a DBZ liveaction movie would be. But of course, the DBs make it less of a big deal... but someone important to a main character has to die, right?
Actually I can see it working better as a saga that would be out of order, because of the plot points and character events that we'd want to happen. Even if we retell part of the story, we'll change things, because we need character drama and development and all of that. (X3 comes to mind). It can be done, but probably won't, unless we do it ourselves.

I definitely agree. If the movie is being made, there should only be two, not 4 regarding sagas. I believe the movie should try to adapt the manga and anime as best as possible, while fixing any noticeable errors both mediums had.Uhm note that when the Japanese (more specificly TOEI) made a animated movie out of the Red Ribbon Army Saga from DragonBall, they didn't keep everything in, so why are you assuming that they woud?

So yeah, I think the first movie should just work like the Dragon Ball movies, and try to link the two Tenkaichi Budokais, and the Piccolo Daimao arc together. Then the final one should be regarding the Saiyans and Freeza. I really don't think a whole movie should be dedicated to the Saiyans, but it can be if possible =P
Well I always figured that given how long each Saga is/was that they'd really need to be seperate movies per saga.I definitely agree. If the movie is being made, there should only be two, not 4 regarding sagas. I believe the movie should try to adapt the manga and anime as best as possible, while fixing any noticeable errors both mediums had.

In the Saiyan Saga there's not too much that needs to be covered, or a lot that can be cut but you defenitly need...
- The beggining (Goku's current life status, him taking Gohan to his old friends, etc)
- The arrival of Raditz (his meeting with the Farmer and Piccolo)
- Goku & Piccolo Vs Raditz
- Goku in Heaven
- Piccolo training Gohan
- Arrival of Vegeta and Nappa (causing destruction, etc)
- The showdown between the good guys and Nappa (and possibly the Saibamen)
- Goku's return (defeats Nappa, etc)
- Goku Vs Vegeta
- Epilogue/Namek set-up
Not a whole lot of major plot points, but when you go through everything that is included in the Freeza Saga, it's a lot, to the point where people refer to everything up to the big battle with Freeza the "Namek Saga" and everything there after the Freeza Saga (up until the Android Saga. (I myself actually hate all the "Captain Ginyu Saga" "Trunks Saga" titles tagged onto all the little mini-arcs, because they are hardly sagas, and more like chapters) The Android Saga is also somewhat similar where everyhing up until the Cell Games is refered to as the Android Saga. Though the Buu Saga does get into the main villian (Buu) a lot sooner then the previous two do/did with their main/final villians.
I myself want to see it all animated though just like with DB Movie 4, and since animated movies are generaly only 90 mins at the most you'd basicly have to seperate each (major) saga.
Because the facts that say it won't happen are more recent then the ones that say it will.
So, If thats the way we look at stuff then I guess we can say that the entire Dragonball series sucked, because the "most recent" series was GT.You know it may just be me but I've always thought recent news was more up to date on things then past news, go figure.

Seriously I love Dragonball too. But I have a life, I don't go around looking around for information about some Dragonball movie that keeps coming and going. Quite frankly I don't care if somem website says it is coming out. That dosen't mean that they can't suddenly cancel. Until I see commercials or adds online, I don't care.

I just don't count that at as "news" as all it is something being renewed, and means NOTHING ioverall.
For instance Capcom renewed their Marvel liscense a few years ago after it expired, and like a year or two after they released Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (the last game they used it for) but did they ever make another Marvel game? NO, and there are like a hundred other examples of the exact same thing happening.
So get real about it. The only reason foxed renewed it was because they owned it, and don't want anyone else getting it.
===============================================
Not to mention I think people should look into the Evangelion movie more before talking about what's going to happen with a DBZ movie, as it (the Eva movie) is the closest anime adaption getting to production then any of these others, and unlike DBZ, it might actually happen, and while I'm not exactly excited about it, I'm more optimistic about it then I am about a DBZ movie.Dude that reference was terrible. In the end, I think we can all agree that some of us think that it won't come out and don't want it to, some think that it won't but would like for it to, and others say that it might and want it to.
We don't know what Hollywood will do in the future. There are tons of movie sitting in limbo which will or will not be made. There have been many films that sat around for many years and before finally got a full green light. A Dragonball film can go either way.

We don't know what Hollywood will do in the future. There are tons of movie sitting in limbo which will or will not be made. There have been many films that sat around for many years and before finally got a full green light. A Dragonball film can go either way.
Cuz you're an ocean, you're an ocean, settle down settle down what's the commotion?
