And to think I remember thinking this used to actually be cool and wanted to try out for Gohan.
But then I grew up so yeah, dodged a bullet on this one.

He's like the Mike Matei of DB fans. Just likes to delete comments if people that disagree with him or does not like his hard work.Dorexx wrote:This guy sat 24 hours a day deleting any sign of negative comments on his videos

He was obviously a starving artist.Avenged wrote:And now he is asking for money to work on more episodes?
But seriously, he has zero sympathy from me, too. He obviously can't handle criticism and feels as though the world is against him and owed him something. If he didn't have the heart and dedication towards his project in the long run, then why the hell did he even bother starting it?

Well now he "can't believe" his series touched so many people and he won't quit Absalon (now that he's got over a couple hundred dollars in donations).
Am I the only one who thinks this whole thing was a stunt for money?

I don't think this was a ploy at all. The original post went waaaay too far off the rails for me to think that, I think that was a genuine freak out. But venting is a way to relieve stress, so combine that with unexpected donations and I can see why he'd suddenly turn around.
I just don't expect it to last, at all. If he continues, we might see him have the same kind of outburst again.

I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I think this episode just used every cliche and negative aspect about DB fanfiction in its storytelling.

I can't believe there are people in the comments who say this is way better than Super. I mean, I'll respect that opinion, but I will always completely disagree.
BTW, here for those who missed it.

The only reason people are saying that is because Absalon panders to the fanbase in the worst way. Every shallow trope and stereotype about Dragon Ball is in Absalon.ThatGuyNamedChancey wrote:I can't believe there are people in the comments who say this is way better than Super. To be honest, despite its cliches and horrid overuse of ugly transformations, I found that more entertaining than the last three episodes of Super too. Not to say it's better, obviously. The tone and sense of tension appeal, as do the music choices.
And I swear, if Toriyama made a villain like that robot guy, it would instantly be a fan favorite. There is no doubt in my mind about that.

My favorite is the goofy one, to be honest though the Cooler-like character is somewhat interesting, probably the two best things to have come out of Absalon.fadeddreams5 wrote:To be honest, despite its cliches and horrid overuse of ugly transformations, I found that more entertaining than the last three episodes of Super too. I agree with both of you. This feels like literally EVERY generic Saiyan Survivors fanfiction. He took the ultimate cop-out by saying the Absalon Saiyans escaped Planet Vegeta as it was destroyed. I would have bought the "cloning all the dead saiyans" version a lot better than this.Lord Beerus wrote:The only reason people are say that is because Absalon panders to the fanbase in the worst way. My main issue comes from his attitude a few month back. I've discontinued any support after that. He garners ZERO sympathy from me after that outburst. Its like abused spouse syndrom. Lashes out then apologizes and says he'll never do it again.
Aside from that, I feel like the episode is actually berift of tension. While the last 2 episodes kinda held my attenion, I actually caught myself becoming uninterested and doing other things as the episode progressed. The art was positively cringe-worthy, Cyborg's voice changes 3 different times, the writing is still disjointed and ill-paced, 3 episodes and only 1 thing has been explained, and the tone of the series (as I have always said) is waaay too dark and gritty for Dragon Ball. The tone better befits episodes of Naruto or Street Fighter.
My only two shining lights in this abysmal heap of a mess were the idea that Son Gohan could 'absorb' energy from his surroundings and become stronger, and the voice actor for Hosho/Kosho. I like his voice.

Re: Unofficial New DB Series Dragonball Absalon Episode 1
The thing is that the energy absorption ability Gohan has could be a great way to develop his character, him unknowingly borrowing precious energy from the weak lifeforms surrounding him, possibly killing some in the process, could be something that helps his character grow depending on how the writer wants to approach that. But knowing Absalon, it's merely a tool to make Gohan stronger and nothing more.

Re: Unofficial New DB Series Dragonball Absalon Episode 1
Not gonna lie, seeing that energy absorption from Gohan irked me a bit because it's an idea I've played around with in my mind for a long while. lol.
Not gonna lie again, it came to me after watching this Bleach clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh1gvf3LX1U
If Gohan was fully conscious of that ability, and his hidden power had been increasing (at first, inadvertently) with each passing day since the Old Kai's ritual, it'd explain why he stopped training--fear. Or better, he has been training every single day of his life, only mentally, rather than physically, to keep it in check, explaining why he's managed to revert to SSJ. Imagine what happens when he breaks loose 10 years after the Buu saga. It'd be the perfect love letter to all the Gohan fans that have been neglected.

Re: Unofficial New DB Series Dragonball Absalon Episode 1
I don't understand what people are talking about. The pacing of the story isn't perfect, but it's really solid start. The Z warriors have grown up a bit, and are getting their world turned upside down by a group of enemies that have yet to reveal their motives. Not everything needs to be expository - there ARE such things as build up you know. He's throwing too much in at once, but in the end I'm more entertained than I ever was with BoG or Super. And I HATE "GT-esque" fanfiction with Super Saiyan 5 nonsense and what not. I don't think anybody would be complaining if there wasn't like a 6 month wait between episodes lol.
It's not trying to exploit the same character tropes that we're all accustomed to - the characters do seem like grown up versions of themselves. Gohan especially, even though the dialogue suffers throughout the series a bit we got the best Adult Gohan I've ever seen. The animation is pretty on point as well for a one man team, the storyboarding and tension created along with some of the fight scenes are way better than most of the stuff we've seen come out of Dragonball recently, and the interactions between the Z fighters and the enemies is also heaps better than anything Beerus or Golden Frieza related. Don't get me started on the character designs - they're unique yet retain their respective individuality that we've all grown up with. I like the idea of other saiyans to be honest, but was disappointed that they went the whole "we survived the planet's destruction" route. That is pretty lazy, not to mention boring.
I hear rumors that the guy in real life is a over sensitive clown, not going to dismiss it because truth be told not sure I really care. Maybe he does suck as a person, but he's put way more care and effort into his fanseries than Toei has with the franchise in decades. Judge him all you want, but he's doing this all on a shoe string budget whereas Toei has much more resources available to them and arguably half assed their way to an inferior product. It's grittier and that depends on personal taste, but I like where he was going with it. For the record, I also really enjoyed what Malik was doing with DBNA - it seemed fresh, original, and stayed true to the series. Oh, and the last episode was pretty weak. It could have been paced faster, but it was still enjoyable. Abasalon has taken every single cliche I've hated about GT and post GT fanfiction, and somehow made it worth watching.

You mean like the Z fighters concentrating their love energy to somehow create this mystical joke of a transformation in BoG? And please, don't bring up "well we get to see character development in Goku.." - we get one line of dialogue about how he wishes he obtained this power for himself. It was a ridiculously weak attempt at character development (calling it a character development is a huge stretch). Modern DBZ is a bunch of poorly animated mystical retconning nonsense that's relied on palette swaps to seem fresh and original. The thing is that the energy absorption ability Gohan has could be a great way to develop his character, him unknowingly borrowing precious energy from the weak lifeforms surrounding him, possibly killing some in the process, could be something that helps his character grow depending on how the writer wants to approach that.
