The Two Raging Blast Themes- Kageyama's Last Contributions

Post by DragonBoxZTheMovies » Sun Jul 26, 2015 7:28 am

As Kageyama's last contributions to the franchise, these two songs don't seem to get a lot of attention, which is a little surprising. While they're certainly not on the level of the theme songs for the 2nd and 3rd Budokai games, I still think that both of them are strong works. I love the nostalgic vibe that 'Progression' creates and I really enjoy the high energy and pace of 'Battle of Omega.' They're both incredibly memorable to me, to the point where I can visualize the trailers for their respective games, but I rarely see people cite them when discussing their favourite vocal songs. I do feel like 'Battle of Omega' tends to get a bit more love, whereas opinions on 'Progression' seem to be a little mixed. Perhaps people find the song forgettable because the game it's attached to was also forgettable... :P

What do you guys think of them? Are they deserving of more attention? Especially how these songs were, in many ways, the end of an era.

Battle Of Omega is one of my favorites.
I am a strong critique of Japanese music, because it has cheap and dumb melodies, unbearable vocals, mostly people who can't sing and 90 percent of J-POP is like taking the worst elements of western pop and mash them together.
It went so far, that my recent music project is derived from a joke we pulled in one pub years ago, debating this, that if Japanese can't make good music, we will do it for them...

But on topic. I am a fan of old Japanese rock, that borrowed heavily from New Wave of British Metal, that was popular in Japan since the 80's. Bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath but also other rock bands like Sweet, Queen or E. L. O. and more
are pretty much in the minds of lot of people since. Most notably JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Hirohiko Araki or creator of Guilty Gear Daisuke Ishiwatari, to name a few.
Also, Japanese are talented in the realm of orchestral music and BGM. Before the arrival of J-Pop s**t, disco in the 70's was also prominent.
So next to being a huge fan of Japanese 70's and 80's series mostly, I also love the music and I also like a lot works of Hironobu Kageyama or Make-Up (Saint Seiya franchise), with the heavy rock sounds.
Battle of Omega has that nostalgia and classic feeling that I miss in the new works and there are no cheesy choruses or stuff like that, it just starts banging with the orchestral hits and goes right away with Kageyama singing.
The english: ''Take a chance, beating now'' is funny, but I just love it in the song.
Also, it is probably the last thing done by Kenji Yamamoto and his scandal aside, he was a really talented musician technicaly and arranger, only if he sticked to his original compositions.

You can see a tear rolling down from my eye, discussing this and hearing the horrible new opening themes from Kai and Super respectively.
Tough I kinda like the Fight It Out, from the international version, but I can't dismiss those horrible lyrics and engrish. But the singer is really good.

I personally like the Super opening, but I still really miss Kageyama :(

Kageyama strongly contributes to the embodiment of Dragon Ball-ness to me. If we can't have Kikuchi, it would've at least been nice to get Kageyama to sing the opening for Super. I mean, I know he's aging, but he could've easily done a better job than the unfortunately lazy vocals we got for the existing opening.

If those are, in fact, his last contributions... he definitely went out on a strong note.
Thanos before Thanos was cool.

Let's hope these weren't his very last contributions! I really like Super's opening, but as Thanos said, it would have been nice if he had done the opening. Hopefully he'll be back for a future one.

As long as Kageyama is signed with Lantis, it won't happen any time soon, unfortunately.
