Gaffer Tape wrote:So with Gohan, while I did already have an idea of when I really wanted to delve into his character (I'm at least trying to keep some semblance of grouping topics together), it really only did just occur to me when I finished this video that I haven't said much about Gohan at all up to this point. But that was really more of a realization that, up to this point, there's really nothing to say about Gohan. So far his biggest moment has been his attack on Raditz, which is definitely a big deal, but, again, I'd rather save that discussion to when it's actually had a chance to develop more. But aside from that, he was mostly quiet and out of the way or just plain literally locked up out of sight. I don't really think that's anything to do with Goku. He certainly seemed keen to introduce him and show him off. But he's really more of a real little kid at this point. Of course he's not really conversing with the adults. Of course he's little more than an object to be carted around. He's four! Or three! Something like that! So he's hardly the same Gohan who's palling around with his father's adult friends yet. And while I'd always known that, it still did surprise me how long I've gone without really needing to talk much about him.
Can't blame ya. I did a little reading myself on the beginning to get a little familiarized, and yeah he's kinda just Goku's son with super potential. Outside that he's just nice, polite, and that's kinda it. It's not til later during the saiyans arrival that we get to see some character growth.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Regarding why Kuririn and others didn't tell Goku how faulty that grabbing tail plan was, Goku was on the rope after just one casual blow, Raditz tail was literally the only way of beating him, that's why they reminded silent.

DBD: The Saiyan Arc Part 3!

It's been awhile. Life's been crazy. So take this extra-long episode as my way of making up for it. Warning: the plot does not move forward very far in this episode. This one is almost all about character study. Specifically, it's all about Piccolo and... Chichi?!

Tales of Symphonia said the same quote as Piccolo did about fate. It's probably a popular statement or Tales of Symphonia borrowed the quote.

Amazing. I was really enjoying it, so when it ended all I could say was "Aw man, already?"

You bring up a great point about Piccolo. I've never really given that much attention to that quote before, but it does make him a much more complex character if you think about it, question is if that complexity is intentional or not. I think you went for way too long about Chi-Chi, even if I enjoyed it, the complaint that she's "inconsistent" could have simply been answered with a "she has never looked for a fight", or something along those lines.

A very insightful discussion of Chichi.

As to the Kami's successor thing, i see two options

1. Kami already had a successor picked out: Goku
2.Kami saw something in Gohan and wanted him to be the successor

I've never ever thought about Chi Chi in that much depth, and I don't think Toriyama has either. Valiant effort to humanize her, but I still hate her lol

But Goku had already turned him down and, well... Gohan would be 5!

And a child shall lead them... just kidding.

Would have been an interesting mentorship triangle, Kami and Piccolo, vieing for Gohan's affections-man this is going in a terrible direction, forget what I just said.

Toriyama wouldn't need to think. He was born in the 50's and he was born in Japan. He had decades to see how and understand how girls, women, and mothers were emulated in his country. For him it's no big deal to write a housewife based on what he has seen. As we are the foreigners looking in his series, what was everyday fare for him, would be discussed and debated by us as "depth."

Gohan and Chichi's first victories were both against dinosaurs!

Personallly I feel Toriyama's females started off okay in their debuts but remained pretty undeveloped for the most part, including Chichi.

Chi Chi kinda remind me of Lisa's father from "Coming to America" the moment he find out that Akeem is king, he immediately tells her old boyfriend to get lost :D He is simple man, but he still wants her daughter to be happy, and not having to worry about money. Same with Chi Chi, she saw her husband getting beat up, and in anime, her father was about to be blown up by bazooka, and he would be, if Goku didn't save him while he was flying to King's Castle, to confront Piccolo Daimao.

I do not know if I had an opinion of ChiChi prior, but I do recall that I came to the same conclusion- that ChiChi is trying to live out a world she knows nothing about but feels she must pursue, and Goku and Gohan's going into mortal dangers destroys that- upon seeing her introduction as a child on Toonami back when. As if everything just fell into place. Naturally, considering I was no more than thirteen at the time and far from the brightest light, it was something I sort of assumed other people picked up on too. A bit surprised to find out that was not the case. I would disagree that FUNimation's scripting diluted ChiChi's surface-level understanding, I would argue it actually enhanced it. Lord knows Goku and ChiChi look out of place in the first Broly movie, and ChiChi's entertaining the notion of teenage Gohan's future doctorate degree got a chuckle from me.

Piccolo's response to Gohan is a bit hard to approach, it could mean something broader, it could just be the angry, anti-social Piccolo's avoiding a proper answer and just saying whatever comes to mind. The broader meaning is hardly forced in that case, though, given that Gohan's Saiyan attributes are an asset that effectively forces him to fight even when he would rather not, and "blame your fate (for being Goku's kid)", would be a simple way to express that.

I don't think I've ever seen one of these video's and never thought "How the hell did I not notice that before." My mind is blown every time a new one of these parts comes out. There's a reason I call this the only worthwhile Dragon Ball youtube series.

Hey, there's so much I've learned or figured out through discussing things on these forums. There's a reason I credit Kanzenshuu and its forums at the end of every arc. You guys are awesome!

I mean, you're pretty open about looking at cartoon porn. Why would you do that? It's fiction. The proportions of these women are not possible to reach in reality.

Commenting as i watch

-Regarding the training issue, my take on it is that as people get stronger, training gives them more benefits than it would if they were weaker
-To be fair to Goku, his third master was a cat
-Oh my god i never thought about Goku taking his weights off for snake way XD

I always felt that, the humans got a big boost in power from training in that one year, because they had several training partners while Goku only had Popo. Someone who I was just talking to mentioned that its mentioned twice in the Cell arc that having a training partner results in better gains.

- That's true, how the heck scouter didn't picked Chaozu and Yajirobe power level? They were surely stronger than Yamucha at this point.
- I also try not to pay too much attention to power levels, but i always wondered, why no one get siginificant power boost during these 5 years? Piccolo was still around, ready to counterattack, yet both he and Z-Warriors got barely stronger, yet it was suddenly 1 year was enough to get from 150-416 to 1000-3000?
- Kinda show how Mr. Toriyama treats Gohan from very beginning.
