Beerus isn't basically Majin Buu. He's completely different. Unlike the other big bads, Beerus isn't really bad. He's more of a force of nature.

100% agree.fadeddreams5 wrote:I knew someone would write this the minute I posted that. lolThe self-serious (sort of) nature of Dragon Ball from the Saiyan arc to the Cell arc is really a blip on the radar in terms of the series' lifespan, though. What you're complaining about with "modern" DB is basically what it always was.
I disagree. Dragon Ball, besides the first saga, was actually darker and less "kiddy" than all this modern content, with its shift in tone, slightly more meaningful deaths, and sexual humor. I mean, there's part of the RRA saga, the Tenshinhan arc, and the Piccolo saga. Sure, there were comedic moments that subverted our expectations. I mean, that should be the goal of any joke or comedy. However, the major villains and antagonists were always intimidating (Staff Officer Black, Tao, Tenshinhan, King Piccolo, Piccolo Jr, etc.) and respectable, as was God himself. Fat Buu, Beerus, Chilled, Abocado, and modern Freeza? Manchild, quirky food-lover and frenemy, quirky version of major villain, non-threat, and another non-threat, respectively. Saiyans were always depicted as ruthless by nature. Tarble? Everything I mentioned above. Aliens were commonly humanoid and intelligent. Nowadays? Cartoon caricatures or scary monsters, starting with EoB.
Everything, from humor, tone, violence has been toned down since DB. Not to mention, the choreography of battles themselves.
Majin Buu (specifically Kid Buu, the original) was a force of nature. A force of nature is mindless, primal, and beyond reasoning. Beerus on the other hand, is a huge dick. He's built up as this force of nature when he's just another Fat Buu. Destroying things on whim because of really asinine reasons, addiction to food, childish behavior, etc. He doesn't even play up to his mystical "God" status at all.Beerus isn't basically Majin Buu. He's completely different. Unlike the other big bads, Beerus isn't really bad. He's more of a force of nature.

When the action begins, Beerus is serious. That's the difference between him and Buu.

Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
Very interesting thread. I don't know all of the new characters very well, some I've only seen concept arts, but I'll comment on the ones I've seen.
First of all, Jaco is an amazing character. I loved everything about him. His looks, his personality, his role in the story... He is just perfect and fits perfectly within the Universe, especially with the early Dragon Ball stuff. Really, really good and shows how Toriyama can still make good additions to the franchise... rarely (in my honest opinion, of course). But of course he had to do something wrong, and making Tights Bulma's sister is reaching it. Why not a distant cousin or something? It would feel a lot less forced. Oh well.
And speaking of never-seen-before relatives, I have Tarble. I just hate that he exists. Why didn't anyone ever mention him before? Why does he look so young if Planet Vegeta blew up more than 30 years ago? Why is he still wearing that armor, and a scouter? What's up with his poorly designed wife? Actually, what's up with this simplistic design being giving to every new alien? Those little guys in Episode of Bardock were just as horrible and un-Dragon Ball.
I haven't seen much of Towa and Mira, since I stopped playing Xenoverse around the time we fight them for the second time, but I can't say I liked what I've seen. Their designs look weird, reminding me of newer Pokémon with color patterns that shouldn't be there and things like that. Towa definitely looks better than Mira in that aspect, but for me they're both below average. As for the character themselves, Mira is boring to me, and Towa has an interesting role. A villain messing with time is actually something that should've been shown in the main series, it would've made for a good story.
The Kaioshin of Time is a good addition to the universe, too. I think she is perfect. I mean, the god of time that lived through all the ages, is billions of years old, is just a little girl? That's so Toriyama. And since we're talking about Xenoverse, I loved what was done with Future Trunks. He's not a new character, but the whole Time Patrol thing is a good idea, and gives greater consequences to time travel.
And of course, Beerus and Whis are the best thing to happen to Dragon Ball since the original manga ended. Though I dislike Super Saiyan God (and its new blue-haired form, too), I must say those two characters make up for it. They're just that good. About Champa, it remains to be seen. If there's not a good reason for him looking like a fat Beerus, I will be disappointed. When we heard there were several Gods of Destruction, all of our imaginations started creating these different looking guys, and now they're all kind of the same? Lame.

I'm not even sure what that means. There were plenty of times where Buu was serious in Z. Nobody said they're exactly the same character, but let's be honest - Beerus is a rehash of Buu. A boring one at that, at least right now.ABED wrote:When the action begins, Beerus is serious. That's the difference between him and Buu.

He says to himself that Trunks isn't a super saiyan as he and kakarot are the only 2 left. One of MANY examples of Tarble not being possible without more plot holes. Waste of a character in a waste of a special.DoomieDoomie911 wrote:How is Tarble a plot hole? I know that it seems unlikely that Vegeta wouldn't have mentioned him, but that is in his character. Tarble is a decent concept, but he could use a bit more personality and depth
Beerus and Whis aren't bad, but as stated before, they're getting way too much hype and screentime at the expense of others.

ABED wrote:Why does Beerus hold back the franchise?
Because we go from BOG to ROF and goku is STILL below beerus and whis -_-...... Seriously? He had over a year of training, zenkai from nearly dieing from beerus, A BRAND NEW FORM,and trained under whis...and had VEGETA as a training partner....all that and his power level doesn't even double.....all so Beerus isn't surpassed because he sleeps and doesn't train.
From the beginning of Z to when frieza was beaten on namek Goku went from under 400(under HALF of a thousand) to over 120 MILLION. That was just a year. It's shown Goku never stops training. He always makes himself stronger and the rate he makes himself stronger always increases as he trains harder and harder everyday with the increases in power he gets. It only took him 6 days to get from 8k to 120k. That's him getting 15x stronger in under a week. We don't know what the rate is in the buu saga but seeing how it's goku it's gotta be big....but to play it safe lets say its 15x each week (even though its 7 days in a week and not 6) .....there's like 48 days in a week, goku should get well over 100x stronger in 14 days, but he's NERFED so beerus's lazy poorly written ass can stay important. I can accept whis IF Whis keeps training.....but beerus should be weaker without ttraining and goku should be able to 1 shot beerus even before he went to sleep after BOG.
Beerus is poorly written, nerfs the characters, beat piccolo with chopsticks making piccolo weaker then a fucking brick by the laws of physics. He's just an egotisical brat who thinks he's hot shit but isn't....he's gotenks if he was a CGI purple cat.

The new video game characters are pretty prototypical. They're about as interesting as Hatchiyack,Kurilien or any other DBO character.
Everyone else is okay. Nothing to write home about. I'd like to see Beerus, Whis and Jaco be a little less one note but so far their only exposure into the franchise has been the new movies so I'll cut them some slack.

Goku always has further to go,ever since beerus showed up everyone's been nerfed, and the franchise has taken a HUGE decrease in quality. Beerus represents DB evolution, but worse if you really think about it.ABED wrote:I prefer that Goku not be stronger than Beerus so soon.

But it's refreshing to see that further to go doesn't simply mean that yet another seemingly impossibly stronger opponent has shown up. Not everyone has been... I can't bring myself to write ner--- I hate that term. It's pretty par for the course that the bad guy makes most of the good guys look weak in comparison. Vegeta actually looked stronger than he ever did in that moment where he had that flurry of offense. Most of the time, he's fodder.LSSJGODSSJ4Gogeta wrote:Goku always has further to go,ever since beerus showed up everyone's been nerfed, and the franchise has taken a HUGE decrease in quality. Beerus was a breath of fresh air after Buu.

Beerus IS buu. A bad guy who's not really bad and will kill someone and even a planet over food. Very egotistical and makes plot hole. I'll give beerus credit for not having to use cheap shit like buu' regeneration and absorptions, but a good villain PUSHES THE CHARACTER FURTHER,he doesn't nerf him. GOku should keep getting like 20x stronger each week and they shoulda just added that as god his power rises as he sleeps or something. Everyone is nerfed to mae him look good, and his power is EXTREMELY over touted in the community. SSJ4 Tier my ass.

Buu was a bad guy. There are a couple different Buus. The fat one is essentially a different character than the others because his nature was softened by absorbing Dia Kaioshin. The others are pure evil. And he doesn't n--- Goku, he pushes Goku to be better and even teaches him.
Buu was never going to destroy a planet over food.

Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
I personally prefer classic DBZ over the New DBZ, with that said.
They seem to actually be doing a pretty good job with new characters.
It's different, but it's good.
My Girlfriend didn't know about Jaco when we went to see RoF and she fell in love with the character with the whole "bang" scene.
Beerus has this odd bad guy/ threat/ hostile thing going on, but he's like kept at bay by some hidden respect or something for Vegeta and Goku, or maybe it's Whis with some sort of influence. I like that tinge of mystery and ominous behavior.

Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
I would agree on the kawaii creature and asspull lore existance, not that much on the rest. Machismo and masculinity in human history relate partially to physical superiority, that one is definitely true to DB, but also in huge part to sex/attractiveness/perception by potential lovers (if not primarly). So I just don't really think it's very relevant to discussion about pure-blooded Saiyans, going with the lore they're not super interested in that stuff so the comparsion with "homo sapiens males" and their machismo/masculinity concept doesn't work well.fadeddreams5 wrote: He's married to a cutesy creature. His existence is an asspull. His nature conflicts with the excessive machismo, masculinity, and killer instinct previously established of the saiyan race. He is the brother of Vegeta, but unlike another certain mystery relative, he's a punk who can't hold his own and hates to fight. He's a new saiyan, but rather than bring bravado, he brings light-heartedness.
He's everything I hate about modern DBZ rolled into one character. I see him as, basically, the opposite of Broly, who has also been stated to represent everything wrong with DBZ, only in the eyes of certain fans.
As for the kind of physical/fighting superiority, whether more primal/aggresive (Vegeta) or sport-like (Goku), it's been a topic for the series since Day 1 because of Goku. Granted, it was retroactive 'cause at first we never knew he came from an aggresive race, but still. Whether only the aggresive/primal way is true for the Saiyans is a whole discussion in itself, personally I don't think it's mandatory. I see the sports-like desire to fight while having better moral compas valid as well. But I guess that's pretty detailed subjective subject.
Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
The only reason Goku was more "sport-like" was because he hit his head when he was a baby, losing his natural violent instincts and becoming a nice kid. Until Tarble's introduction, every single Saiyan was born aggressive.

Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
Well, the main problem with Tarable and Gine is that they both have lots in common with mixture used in elementary diet. They are bland to the point of having no traits, delivered in unmemorable form and leave bad aftertaste.
Tarable is a joke from bad fanfiction. "Vegeta's wimpy brother"was a cliché second only to "Vegeta's Super Saiyan sister". He is so unmemorable that he makes Abo and Cado interesting in comparison. When it comes to worldbuilding it's even worse- they at least brought us an information about remnants of Cold's empire, while the only thing that Tarable brings is question how he was allowed to live in first place.
Gine is actually a worse- the first canonical female Saiyan we see and of course she is not a fighter. She is clumsy, and lovely and the only thing she succeeded in was bringing to tears those who praised DBZ for showing that nurture can beat nature. It's like those nauseating Dicken's tales that tell that you can rise above your social class (when your biological father was a gentelmen) and Hunchback of Notre Dame which wonderfully shown us gentle, innocent Gypsy Esmeralda (who was a daughter of a French, stolen as a kid.
Fortunately Whis and Beerus keep tradition of noble demons with a quirks. I'm only afraid that they will end like Trsar Bombs- so powerful that never used.
Jaco is really nice and refreshing. And don't forget Tights who managed to build time machine and hide it from male readers

Re: What's your opinion on the new characters?
Oh yeah I forgot to mention Gine in my post, probably because she only has a few lines, but that's the tragic thing about her and Bardock's story, they die very soon after it ends and we never see them again so what little time we get with them is all they get to make an impression, in the Bardock special he was given a lot more time for the viewer to get to know him but here all we learn is that Gine is Goku's mother and she's a butcher...and that's it
It's all we'll ever know about her... of course it makes it tragic but it also makes her very underdeveloped, the biggest thing she has going for her is her character design and I think she looks very nice, I was hoping that she would be a fighter though, it's sad that she isn't but I imagine Goku gets his friendly side from her.
The Galactic King was a waste of a potentially interesting character, making him a weird floating jellyfish thing was a visual gag definitely but it brings no explanation to why he is king of the galaxy which is weird since we might not see that character again yet he remains canon.
