Cheesy Funimation Lines

Post by IgnorantFuniFan » Mon Aug 17, 2015 10:47 am

When they started dubbing Dragon Ball Z, Funimation tries to spice up dialogue by adding in their own lines to the script. I recall a few douchey moments:
Here, we learn that Goku really likes the ground!
What a quick line! Vegeta's so quick you might expect to see him at the improve tonight
- http://youtu.be/cgRWrI9H3y4
Goku makes a very smart observation.
But Yamcha, Puar is having a drink, not eating food!
Goku gives Freeza a little lesson on manners.

Obviously there are a bunch more out there so post them if you can!
Let's just all get along and beat each other up

Freeza's infamous "Yee haw, ride em cowboy!" line still makes me cringe every time. :P

Every day on the Kanzenshuu Forums there's always someone making a new thread about how FUNimation screwed Dragon Ball during their first attempts. This topic in particular has been brought up so many times it makes me feel like I'm partly living the same day over and over. Instead of continuing to make threads like this, I wonder why people don't feel inclined to use the search bar at the top right and find them that way.

While I understand the sentiment, it's also important to realize that new people come and go everyday. Not everyone's already thrown themselves in so much and even stop to think that something's been so covered to death. That we're seemingly converting so many fans over and giving them pause to reflect on their old fandom is encouraging, I'd say! So long as nothing's done with true malice, I don't see too much of an issue. If it doesn't interest you, there's always the options of simply not reading it.

Some of these lines are hilarious. I actually like a few of them them more than some of the real lines because they make the series feel goofy and fun.
Imp. Cell: "Do you think you're being CUTE?"
SSJ Vegeta: "Bitch, I'm adorable."

I know it's not technically the dub we think of in these threads, despite technically being Funimation, but this has got to be my favorite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebaO6aoCj2A
"You just 'til it grows back!"

Absolutely perfect. Not just because of the blatant censorship. Not just because they still included a clip of the villain punching a guy's goddamn arm off. Not just because of Ten now gaining Piccolo's abilities. But also because it seems like he'll really give Nappa a beating after he gets back his arm. That he's confident it won't just, like, get punched off again. That he also has Metal Cooler's power to get stronger after losing an arm. Unfortunately Tenshinhan had to squander his tactical advantage by using the Kikoho to teleport to another dimension (coward).

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

It's virtually impossible to "not read it" considering the title of the thread is literally "Cheesy Funimation Lines" which is easily visible when browsing the General Franchise Discussion board. The only reason why I take issue with it is because these types of criticisms aren't even relegated to specific threads like this. I've only been a member of the forums for about two years and yet I can direct you to about 100 instances in which the line "mondo cool" is brought up somewhere.

The first page of the General Franchise Discussion board alone has two threads that critique these issues in some form so I really don't know why it needs to be brought up again when there are still recent and active on-going discussions about it. Not to mention the lack of consideration when regarding how often it has been brought up in the past, either.

Your "case" seems to be "different people are contributing to different discussions in different ways, while also sometimes overlapping with the types of contributions they make."

There is no-one forcing you to read these threads. If the thread titles themselves are so inherently offensive to you, then I cannot offer any more assistance.

Notice the last sentence of the original post, "Post more if you can!". This is not a millionth-and-a-half "FUNimation ruined the show" thread, this your once-in-a-blue-moon "These one-liners are unreal!" thread. It is entirely for laughs.

1997 Tree of Might dub:

Amond: Hey you big bunch of wimps, you think you can destroy the Tree of Might?

Daiz (to Goku): Pick on someone your own altitude!

Turles: Moon blast explode!

Goku (to Daiz and Cacao): Dats enough, ENERGIEY BLAST!!!

Original seasons 1-2:

Illusion Saiyan: Hey, my grandmother can gather energy faster than that, but don't feel bad, she's one tough cookie!

ANY line Nappa says

Vegeta: What a big bunch of jerks, because of them i have to use up ALL of my energy!

Dodoria: That hurt as much as a bumblebee sting

Vegeta (to Dodoria): You ready to say uncle ya big gumball!?

Vegeta (to Namek elder): I don't think that's your concern, frogface!

Original season 3:

ANY line Freeza says

Gohan: Hasta-la-vista, froggy!

Well you have to consider that they aired DBZ before Dragonball in the USA, so they probably figured people wouldn't be familiar enough with Tien and his abilities to know that line was nonsense.

There are a few off the top of my head that i find mildly amusing

During the reenactment of the cell games video, over the Toei logo, there's a jingle "Waves and Rocks! This video is brought to you by Waves and Rocks."
Then there's the memorable, "Is it over?" "Not until the fish jumps." The fish jumps out of the water, "It's over."

Not sure if this counts as cheesy, but after Mr. Satan hears his daughter has been hurt, he runs out of the room yelling, "Daddy's coming, Sugarbeat!" It's the sweetness and over the topness of the delivery that makes me laugh.

That line is legitimately amazing and one of the few times I'll fully endorse a dub adding dialogue.

"That's the worse Humphrey Bogart impersonation I've ever heard!" - Gohan

I have no idea what they thought this line added.

The first line of season 3 was literally, "It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's Goku!"

Cat loves food - I can't stand it. It's so embarrassingly awful. It makes me cringe every single time.

Oh and let's not forget Piccolo's motivational "Yes, yes, YES, YES! I can do this! I feel great!" speech.
