Oda's got amazing foreshadowing and world-building skills.
I've got trust in Super; plot-wise the only one that fell flat for me so far was the Pilaf episode, and that was only because I liked the BOG version of their entry into the storyline better than Super's version of it (and they still made up for it by being experimental with the linework). I wish Toei had more time and skilled staff to put the episodes together, but I've been having a lot of fun so far so I really don't have any major complaints atm. Two of my favorite Dragon Ball things--Vegeta in awkward situations and Gokû being cute--are being satisfied right now so I'm good.
please be careful about spoilers for the one piece anime-only watchers like myself
I think Toriyama might be taking a page out of Oda's book. There is a reason he mentioned the 12 universes in BoG. He must have something detailed planned and crafted and isn't just improvising like he did with DBZ.
Granted I think DBZ's plot was pretty good for improvisation, but I would like to see something more sophisticated in terms of structure. It would be nice knowing the author knows exactly where the show is going and how it is going to end.
Re: Spoilers
Apologies! ^^; I'll spoiler-tag when I talk about the manga from now on.
Re: Toriyama's foreshadowing
What I'm especially liking about the foreshadowing is how it leaves you guessing; that bit in episode 2 with Vegeta and the stage was some skillful misdirection because I was certain it was eluding to a future Bingo Dance 2. Just having foreshadowing in Dragon Ball is so novel to me since I enjoy the foreshadowing in OP so much and haven't ever had that in DB before. :3
Now that I've been reminded of the future Uni 6 arc's "thick plot", I do actually have hopes that we might get some kind of multi-tiered storyline once that starts. If the opening animation for Super is on the nose, they might do an A and B plot where one side is Gokû and Vegeta on an adventure in Uni 6 while the other is Gohan and company dealing with a related threat on Earth; or just something where multiple plots intersect at some point.
Minor dip from last week. But other than that, decent rating all the well.

That's actually pretty good; Yokai Watch is one of the current "new hotness" shows after all.
Yokai Watch beats us in the DVR ratings all the time though, so I assume Super is like the in the top 4 most watched anime in Japan at the moment, battling it out with One Piece, Doraemon and Yokai Watch.

Still good that Super's holding its own. I wish they'd put out more merchandise though, or at least some merch that isn't just cards for arcade games. ^^;
At least we're getting a calendar (with I hope new artwork) in a couple weeks: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/2016CL-8
If the show goes on for too long then it might cause franchise fatigue. I think one of the reasons why GT did poorly because the show was going on for 10 years and I think people just got tired. I think a 11 year break is what the series needed at the time.
LuckyCat wrote:One Piece dipped a lot from last week. The lower TV ratings across the board might be attributed to Obon, a big travel holiday in Japan.
Oh, that explains why everything was strangely low.
JulieYBM wrote:The same thing that happened with Dragon Ball GT is already happening with Dragon Ball Super: Toei Animation is running into production with no time for their production crew to figure out what to do and how to do it.
I'm not sure that's the case. I think the retellings are giving them time to work on the fully new arcs.
If we assume the retellings will take two cours, and considering Toriyama was talking about the Universe 6 arc and doing characters designs a couple months ago, they know what they'll do next year. One of the producers even said Toriyama came up with a "thick" plot, i don't think GT had that luxury ( although i personally think the Baby arc seemed planned enough, at least).
What I failed to convey was that I meant in the case of Dragon Ball GT the issue was a lack of knowing what their plot was going to be and when it was going to end, which led to production issues. A lack of knowing what the heck of going on is hurting Dragon Ball Super more so from a production point. Non-existent planning has everyone running around with their heads cut off. I think the earlier hunt for the Ultimate Dragon Balls and Episode #39-64 are where Dragon Ball GT definitely felt like any planning was now up in smoke and Series Director Kasai Osamu simply gave up trying to make anything good.
Part of me does wonder if Chioka Kimitoshi's absence from the first nine episodes is due to him trying to focus on ironing out the Universe Six arc. Experience leads me to believe he's simply too busy trying to manage the production to actively be involved in any one episode, though. If Chioka or Producer Kido Atsushi could just hunt down a few small sub-contracting studios that aren't busy and have them handle a few episodes themselves to try and get production further ahead I think we'd be in for a much better production. Right now Toei Animation seems to have house animators haphazardly working with animators from various sub-contracting studios without much focus. If scripts and storyboards could just get a little further ahead so that sub-contracting studios could animate entire episodes themselves as was done on the first three series I think we would be in for stronger in-house episodes.

We had foreshadowing before in Dragon Ball. The ssj and ssj2 forms are two of them that I remember for now.
I really love foreshadowing. Its my favourite device in writting. Shows that the author knows where he's going and keeps me interested to see that happen.
One Piece and HunterxHunter are masters in that.
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.
Favourite old DB Animators: Masaki Sato and Tadayoshi Yamamuro
Favourite new DB Animators: Yuya Takahashi and Chikashi Kubota
Sazae-san 8.8
One Piece - Episode of Sabo 8.6
Doraemon 8.3
Shin-chan 7.8
One Piece 7.1
Conan 6.3
Dragon Ball Super 6.0
Maruko-chan 5.5
Yokai Watch 4.4
Anpanman 3.9
An incredibly slow week (seriously, look at Maruko-chan), but Super was one of the few shows somewhat unaffected, even though the weekend series suffered the most.
i'm starting to wonder whether these summer weeks are an exception or the standards are actually getting even lower.
When Sazae-san doesn't produce double digits, you know it's a really slow week. I was honestly expecting Episode of Sabo to pull in at least a 10.0 considering how popular a character Sabo in the One Piece fandom in Japan. I mean, in the most recent character poll, he ranked 5th. In comparison, Super is holding up pretty well. Hell, it's seem like the only show that got an increase in ratings from last week, if I'm not mistaken.

Episode of Sabo was a joke. They just rehashed clips from other OP episodes. There couldn't have been more than 30 seconds of original new animation out of a 2 hour special.

I saw that list recently and for the first time Zoro wasn't second. I'm actually not all that surprised though, ever since Law was introduced people like Zoro and Sanji do feel like they've pushed aside quite a bit.
Luffy, Zoro and Sanji were always the monster trio who fought the three strongest enemies but now Sanji doesn't really do anything and it was Law who got to fight Vergo and then Doflamingo.
I'd be surprised if he doesn't become a permanent member of the crew.
None of what I said had anything to do with ratings I know.

Maruko-chan that low?
Sazae-san not above 10.0?
Super doing better than Maruko-chan?
