How could anyone look at some of these lines and actually approve them? I'll never, ever understand it. :?

That's why I'm not a big fan of adults trying to appeal to kids. Write something you can be proud of.

I don't like Dragon Ball with unnecessarily added lines, and cheesy, out of character humor.

My husband and I are watching these and we are finding them absolutely hilarious. Are they 100% true to the original Japanese script? Obviously not. Are they hilarious? Absolutely. They're a lot more entertaining than the super serious dialogue that I've seen Kai have. I'm not saying the original Funi dub's voice acting was great nor that Kai's Funi dub was bad but these lines were funny.

Well, we have different tastes in humor. I don't find them funny, and you make it sound like DB or just Kai is super serious and devoid of humor. There's plenty of humor, just not eye rollingly awful so-called jokes and unintentionally funny dialog. If there's one thing DB doesn't lack it's humor.

I've always preferred to hear cheesy lines to repetitive generic dialogue about power levels such as "It looks like he's gotten stronger!" or "This ki is huge!".

Anyway this line has always made me giggle in a good way:

As someone who never watched more than a dozen episodes or so of Funi's dub; it's worse than I thought...

It's not David Mamet, but the dialog in DB isn't as generic as you claim.

"Why didn't I get married?!" (or something to that effect) is Kuririn's line when he sees Freeza transforming. "It's times like this that I ask myself, 'why didn't I become a shoe salesman?!'" The former is hardly generic. It's quite humorous, but also in character. The second one is just plain cheesy. FUNi is no less repetitive and generic when talking about battle powers.

I find the randomness of the shoe salesman line to be funny. Krillin talking about getting married is something he'd done before on a number of occasions.

And I'd actually say Funi are more creative in how they talk about battle powers, like when Mystic Gohan approaches the battlefield and Piccolo says "What is it!? It's mind boggling!I've never experienced a power like this! It's outrageously strong!". In the Japanese version, I think he just makes a simple comment about a strong ki heading their way.

Another example is when Piccolo senses Raditz for the first time and says "It can't be Goku... It's too horrible...", or when Buu hits Dabura and Gohan says "It's as if he just reached into an endless well of power...". Funi add small touches to the dialogue that make the statements feel more significant and intimidating. Another one is when Piccolo and Dende are sensing Good Buu and Evil Buu separating and Piccolo says "Yes Dende, I feel it too. Something wicked is brewing down there", which gives the already tense scene an even greater sense of foreboding.

Making it in character and not random or bland. The FUNi line, regardless of how funny anyone finds it, is so random that it feels like a group of manatees picking out idea balls.
In the Japanese version, I think he just makes a simple comment about a strong ki heading their way.
One, you are picking out a random quote that's hardly indicative of anything, and two, the Japanese translation isn't a science, so it's open to interpretation on the part of the translator. I had to read a lot of articles and books in college written by German economists, and the translations varried. A number of them are very dry whereas others wereas others were more engaging, for lack of a better word. Finally, three, we're not talking about the little flourishes such as the ones you mentioned, we're talking about the cheesy stuff which FUNi added in ample amounts like "mondo cool!" and "Krillin's in da' house!"

But that quote I picked out is a prime example of the bare bones dialogue you hear throughput the series. You only need to watch the Cell Games in Japanese to see how often stuff like that gets repeated. At least Funi tried to make power statements sound a bit less monotonous by punching up the dialogue a bit. And so far, excluding the early Funi and Ocean dubs, every translation of Dragonball I've seen or read makes use of this generic dialogue regarding power, so it's a pretty safe assumption that it's accurate.

And the reason I got into the whole thing about flourishes is because you said Funi aren't any less generic when talking about battle powers.

But you picked what's more or less simple exposition, it doesn't capture the true flavor of DB. Of course exposition is going to come across as dry. The counter examples you chose aren't much better and mostly just gild the lily.

so it's a pretty safe assumption that it's accurate.
I didn't say it was innacurate, simply that's a dry translation. At best, FUNi's use of exposition is just making it a little more flowery.

They are still very generic. Is this your best argument about how FUNi's dialog is better? Their exposition is more flowery?

DB isn't all just exposition. There are great lines like "I will show you a terror greater than that of Hell". I'll take dry exposition over "You dirty crook, you stole your mother's pocket book," or "Sometimes you gotta know when to go, go, go!"

I'll take Goku telling Bahta that he trained really hard over telling him that he eats really wholesome foods.

I'm not a fan of Funi dubs, but I recently watched Bojack dub.
And I think the final last line didn't make any sense, so I changed it

Dude, it's like trying to explain to someone why they shouldn't go out in a tie dye t-shirt & knee-high socks. If they don't get it already, no amount of explaining is going to help.

In this case, the dude can't identify cheesy writing & probably thinks every "big bang theory" line is a totally fresh laugh-riot. Nothing you can do with that... time to move on...
