Wow, so they've already remastered movies 8 & 10? Huh, makes you wonder just how far FUNimation has gotten with this restoration process of theirs...
FUNimation basically admitted why they cropped the series in this trailer. "It gives the series a more cinematic feeling."
I actually think it would be kinda funny if FUNi cropped the movies when they re-release them. They've already got the movies in their original aspect ratio, something that the Japanese fans missed out on. FUNimation actually has the chance to release a product that truly gives you more footage than the original, but they're going to waste that chance by cropping the movies back down to their theatrical ratio.
And yes, I know that getting the theatrical ratio would be pretty cool as well, since that's how the directors wanted the movies to be seen, but releasing the films in the original fullscreen would better fit with the "you're-getting-more-picture" slogan that FUNi's using right now.

So, I see that they are remastering movies and Dragon Ball as well. Sounds like this is going to be released fairly quickly.
Also, was that movie 8 footage fullscreen(FUNimation DVDs) or widescreen(DragonBox)? I couldn't tell.
Also, why did it say "Available early 2007"? Isn't the date confirmed? OOOH! MYSTERIOUS!

Let's see..if FUNimation just came up and said 'Look guys, we screwed up the remastering, but in compensation, you'll get Widescreen!', a lot of people won't buy it (Although if this happens, FUNimation would be forced to redo the sets).Had they just owned up to it and told the literal truth and not some half-assed explination that dances around the questions we were all asking, we'd all be fine.
If they go and say 'Hey guys, it's gonna be in widescreen!', the ignorant fans will go 'yay!' and buy 'em, while everyone else will argue about it. Interesting PR spin. Most fucked up, it is.
Although..if you watch the trailer, both boxes (the 'Original Footage' and the 'Remastered Footage') are both cropped. Guess this proves they screwed up in their remastering process, or they're hiding the truth.
Still...they still haven't shown any footage of anything beyond the Vegeta/Saiyan Saga, which I'm still waiting for =P
Yeah, it's due for February 7, 2007. Somewhere along the lines. Also, why did it say "Available early 2007"? Isn't the date confirmed? OOOH! MYSTERIOUS!

From the comparison shots in this new trailer:

The widescreen version is missing approximately 16% of the 4:3 version's image. (Admittedly the percentage is very rough because the original images are so small and blurry... but the point is that the trailer clearly still shows quite a bit of missing image, despite presenting the comparisons in a very misleading way.)

But the Movie Dragon Box is already framed like this. FUNi won't have anything new on the sides, it'll just be the same as Toei's set. And unless FUNi can remaster the Japanese audio better (which I don't think is even possible), then I'm not interested. On the plus side I must applaud FUNi for actually framing the movies correctly!VegettoEX wrote:If anything, this means FUNimation's going to have a movie boxset that completely rivals the respective Dragon Box in almost every way. Since those WERE framed for 16:9 (just animated 4:3), they can crop that, take their extra stuff on the side, and have something pretty damn cool.
There's a frame late in the remastering video that shows Kame Sen'nin busting out of his shirt. Here's the same shot from the Dragon Box. They're basically identical, no extra footage on the sides...

This is why I find this to be so stupid. For the longest time people were going on about how FUNi's movies were better because they were full frame and Toei's were cropped. Now FUNi is cropping the entire TV series in the exact same manner, and people are praising it...

Am I right to say that this is FUNi's second video to talk about their new season sets?
Anyways, it looks like we may be getting a some remastered movies as well, so that's cool. But I do agree that FUNi's doing one heck of a job dancing around the whole cropping issue
...
Did they show any DB (as in without the Z) in that video? Or are you referring to DBZ as Dragon Ball? Ugh, why did Toei have to change the name of the series with that dang Z?!fps_anth wrote:So, I see that they are remastering movies and Dragon Ball as well.

Does this mean you'll be buying The Dead Zone again?VegettoEX wrote:If anything, this means FUNimation's going to have a movie boxset that completely rivals the respective Dragon Box in almost every way. I could care less that Funimation will be giving the movies the wide screen treatment; I have the full screen version from them already, and the original version from Toei's movie Dragonbox. But this should make lots of fans happy who want to see the theatrical presentation.
What I really want to make my movie collection complete, is a full screen version that doesn't crop the edges and zoom in the picture, you can barely see Trunks' fist going out Gokua's back in movie 9! Coming soon in 2020 Funimation?

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.
DB DBox color corrections & DBox color corrections.

If you look closely, you can see a shot of Lunch with Tien on a computer. I'd assume that they are re-mastering it as well...why the hell wouldn't they?DaemonCorps wrote:Am I right to say that this is FUNi's second video to talk about their new season sets?

That doesn't mean they're remastering the original Dragon Ball just yet. Lunch was in DBZ as well.fps_anth wrote:If you look closely, you can see a shot of Lunch with Tenshinhan on a computer. I'd assume that they are re-mastering it as well...why the hell wouldn't they?
