Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
Overrated
Vegeta! His fans are outright worst then Broly's, thinking he deserves some revenge that he has no right to by any means. He isn't remorseful for any of the crap he does in the series and obviously carries the attitude of "Yeah and I'll do it again too!" also most of the major villains of DBZ...ARE VEGETA'S FAULT! Yet he's toted as 'a total badass!' when in all reality he's just a big drama queen. When he loses or is losing, he whines and complains, when he's winning...he brags...and brags...and brags...until he gets his butt kicked cause he spent too much time bragging and allowed the bad guy to just power up and then use Vegeta as a punching bag.
Goku. Sadly I gotta through the lovable guy up there because while I like him, his welcome is running thin with all this intense focus on him and Vegeta.
Vegeta! See above, I just think he was worth mentioning twice.
Beerus. While Beerus is fresh and new, he's already wearing thin as a character for me. I don't mind his self insert into all the backstories but currently his character to me is A kinda dickish, selfish god who has a lot of power and really that's it.
Gohan's power. Gohan's power is getting a tad overrated at this point. I get the anger towards it all, I do. But I think the anger to actual deeds being done aren't really in sync, I think we're overreacting and overrating Gohan's power, yes he has a lot of it but he isn't a fighter. Which you could actually do something with that, a character who is possibly the strongest fighter in the world but doesn't have discipline to harness and use it all properly.
Gotenks. Oh Gotenks, how at first I thought you were a completely awesome thing, then you became not awesome and rather annoying...can you go back to being awesome? Thanks!
Vegetto. I think Vegetto is kinda overrated on all sides. Yes he's strong, yes he's possibly the most powerful none god warrior we've seen in dragon ball to date. But I don't think that really entitles him to the amount of insane hype he gets from the fans, I think he's an interesting idea and I wish he'd stuck around longer but...oh well. Yeah, he's cool but he's not the hottest thing since sliced bread.
Underrated
Anyone not named above and isn't Broly, Janemba, Freeza, or Cell!
Special underrated mention!
LUNCH! LUNCH LUNCH LUNCH LUNCH LUNCH! Did I say Lunch yet? CAUSE LUNCH! (Or Launch if ya wanna go by the dub name!)

Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
I disagree. For example, I myself am a big Nappa fan, and so is Lunatic Fringe evidently. In fact just the other day I had a conversation with a user on IGN who isn't a mega Dragon Ball fan, but enjoyed the Saiyans and Freeza arcs, and all he had was praise for the Nappa fight. He was basically saying the same things Lunatic Fringe is saying.Doctor. wrote:Nappa has a lot of fans because of TeamFourStar's parody series. Same as Mr. Popo, for instance. He doesn't have a lot of fans because of his real character.
I wouldn't say Mr. Popo has "fans", people enjoy making the joke, but nobody talks about the character seriously like they do Nappa.

Vegeta is Yamcha without the humility to accept it. Apparently it's "badass" to bitch and moan whenever you fail at something.
It's a shame, because, at his best, he's extremely well done. It just so happens that his "best" is when he's humiliating himself.

He has potential to be further developed, but they just don't do anything else with him, so all we get is a one-dimensional character who has long since overstayed his welcome.Doctor. wrote:I assume you wouldn't mind explaining your point of view a bit more, I'm interested in how someone like Goku, whose mind has barely been explored to such an extent as Vegeta and Gohan, is not interesting and doesn't have the potential to be developed further. Is he one dimensional to you because he's regressed or one dimensional because he hasn't progressed? You don't stop having previous layers to your character because of the latter but you do to with the former.gohann wrote:He has potential to be further developed, but they just don't do anything else with him, so all we get is a one-dimensional character who has long since overstayed his welcome.Doctor. wrote:I assume you wouldn't mind explaining your point of view a bit more, I'm interested in how someone like Goku, whose mind has barely been explored to such an extent as Vegeta and Gohan, is not interesting and doesn't have the potential to be developed further. Goku is not even close to being one-dimensional. He's two-dimensional at the very least.gohann wrote:He has potential to be further developed, but they just don't do anything else with him, so all we get is a one-dimensional character who has long since overstayed his welcome.

Not the least bit true. Goku's in his 30's and a Saiyan. Roshi was several 100 years old before a new generation TOOK over. They are way past their prime
He's the main character.so all we get is a one-dimensional character who has long since overstayed his welcome
We're two movies in and several episodes into a TV show that at this point is redoing those two movies. Do you have no patience? He's a fun new interesting character with a personality, but "that's it." What you wrote is actually a lot.Beerus. While Beerus is fresh and new, he's already wearing thin as a character for me. The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.

Still doesn't mean he can't overstay his welcome, especially since he does do at the expense of others. He's the main character.

You make it sound like he's a diva throwing a tantrum to give himself more screen time. He's the main character so of course he's going to be the focal point of the show.Still doesn't mean he can't overstay his welcome, especially since he does do at the expense of others.

They're actually making an effort to add depth, like the BoG talk about his pride and, in RF, how they set-up character development. The execution is just bad.gohann wrote:Still, they put very little depth or effort towards him these days.

You seem to take this frustration out on Goku. They can make him the focal point without screwing over others in the process.
Still very vague, and Goku is fleshed out. We have gotten deep into his motivation - to be the best fighter he can be. Goku fights Beerus using the power given to him by friends and family and he's frustrated by him not being able to get to that point by himself, but he's not so insecure that he doesn't ask for their help when he needs to. That's depth.Fleshing out a character and going deeper into him/her.

Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
It's technically not his fault as he's a character and not the writer, but he got all the benefits of unbalanced screen time. When you combine that with his stale personality, you can see why people might be critical.

It's like saying Superman gets unbalanced focus and screen time in his own stories.gohann wrote:It's technically not his fault as he's a character and not the writer, but he got all the benefits of unbalanced screen time. Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
How and why a character acts the way they do, how his actions affect the story and how he reacts to any possible negative repercurssions he himself created. If they're subjected to change and how that development changes them as characters. How their backstory affect their personality or character in general in the context of the story and how the character adapts to and/or embraces his past.

Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
I would add that the character's philosophy is also important. You don't need a backstory for a character to be fleshed out, what's necessary is the character(s) have a point of view.Doctor. wrote:How and why a character acts the way they do, how his actions affect the story and how he reacts to any possible negative repercurssions he himself created. Re: Most Overrated/Underrated Characters
No, a backstory isn't necessary but most of the time it's what serves as the character's motivation. For Goku, his backstory is important not because it affected his character much (he just rejected it at first then accepted it on Namek) but because it changes him in the context story, he goes from that one special kid with a tail to literally trash in just a chapter, and it introduces a very prominent theme in the series (anyone can surpass an elite with hard work).ABED wrote:I would add that the character's philosophy is also important.
