I really wanna know, to anyone who liked the last two movies, how would you react if TOEI was the one that made the exact same Super Saiyan God and Golden Freeza forms? Just curious.

The only time where I think it might be a good idea to read the comments is if you are looking for a specific piece of info concerning the video, such as where a clip was taken from.

If Toriyama had absolutely nothing to do with those movies and those designs were still used, I bet they wouldn't be as accepted.

It made the pill easier for me to swallow to just accept SSGSS Goku/Vegeta and Golden Freeza's appearance. I knew it would forever more be a thing whether I liked it or not, so I try to appreciate the new transformations and write off that they look like fanart from the early 2000s. I still stand by them being lazy and boring designs.

I personally think that the new forms are fine regardless of who made them. Goku's new form is fine in my opinion. I honestly have nothing against it and yeah while it is a bit of a palette swap I personally think it looks fine and it works given the context of the film in both the Japanese and English dub explanations. In fact it's probably my favorite form along with Super Saiyan. Now in the case of Freeza, I think that Golden Freeza is more than just a simple palette swap. If you look closely there are a few minor differences here and there. Also, given that Freeza did witness Super Saiyan prior to both his defeats, I think it is pretty great that his design does incorporate gold into it given it's implied that he did have some active participation as to how the new form looked. However, I won't deny that I do have some issues with it... The problem with giving Freeza a form akin to his brother Cooler is that it kind of ruins the whole progression of forms Freeza went through prior to his final transformation. In Freeza's first transformation he becomes a huge hulking brute, then his second transformation retains his menacing look and adds more complicated intricacies such as an elongated head and shoulder pad things. Finally, his third transformation tears away all expectations and shows us this simple, iconic design that has become the form Freeza is known for. To give us a Cooler transformation would be a step back in the progression of what makes Freeza so great to begin with. Unfortunately, the problem with this is that Freeza's third form was already perfect. Toriyama already made it as simple as possible and there was very little Toei or Toriyama could do really to make it better.

Good point. I don't mind that either.

I have no problem admitting I'm guilty of this. I'm interested in Toriyama's universe, and I'll take the good with the bad.

I got another one:

When ever I see vector art of the "Sparking" games being used at all in fan works. I'll see a lovely wallpaper or fancover then *bam*, there it is in all its blocky glory.

Here are some more

"It's not badass enough."

"Kikuchi works for DB, but it doesn't fit the tone of DBZ."

"If you don't like the dub you're not a true DBZ fan." (I've seen this EVERYWHERE lately....on youtube.)

"The Japanese voice acting is too goofy and doesn't fit. The dub is more serious."

"Omg wut happen to Vegetas pride why he do that I hate DBZ Super."
Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.

60.

Rest in peace.

I guess this is more what brings out my mildly annoyed fanboy...but still, when people say stuff like this it makes me chuckle at how wrong they are
(Context: the comment section of Krillin & Z Fighters fighting the Saiyans in that one weird room portal at the lookout during Saiyan saga filler. The funny thing is that episode is in fact surrounded by more lighthearted "Adventures of Gohan" stuff lol)

How is he wrong though? I agree with him. Mind you, his wording makes it seem like DBZ was Berserk, Elfen Lied, or Attack on Titan-level gritty, but he's right in that the series no longer takes any risks and is much more light-hearted.

:P I think it was his wording more than anything. I do agree that all those things like gruesome deaths DID happen, but I wouldn't call DBZ "dark" because they did. That's like calling Star Wars dark and gritty because people get cut in half, have their limbs chopped, and die.

EDIT: Also, so far the new Dragon Ball stuff that has been playing it safe were the two films, and Super which is a retelling as of now...I recently watched the 13 old Z films and they certainly weren't much darker save for more on-screen blood and stuff. Maybe when Super gets to telling its own story, things will kick up a notch? :D

I'm not saying it wasn't. But it's even more so now. There's no denying the tone of Super is different from the Piccolo-Cell, or even Buu, sagas. The show always managed to maintain its light-hearted nature, but after this scene, a lot changed:

I really can't see them taking that sort of risk anymore, or even attempting to create raw emotion.

Well Super is based on BOG which was a campy and light hearted film. Once Super retells ROF then the show will likely start to get more serious and darker.

Even before BoG, things have gotten more campier and lighter than before. Episode of Bardock, the 2008 OVA, Minus, and so on. F's serious tone is ruined when you take into account there's no real dire situation; the tension is removed when you realize Frieza isn't a threat at all.

Except without Whis' Deus Ex Machina, almost everyone would have died.

It wasn't really a Deux Ex Machina. His ability was shown early in the film (or stated), which foreshadowed that. I called it the minute the manga chapter was released. =P

In relation to what has been mentioned so far, this really gets on my nerves  when i hear it in the DB fandom :
  1. Being gritty and violent = Taking risk.
  2. Being gritty and violent = Having tension.
  3. Gritty and Violent > Lighthearted, in writting quality.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Pretty sure everyone can relate.
