Well, I'm sure to fans who have been waiting for some time, including many members here, it does matter…

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I was just reading the FUNi Buu kai thread and was wondering if perhaps there is a jam up because of FUNi/Ocean Kai? They both seem to be stalled for some reason, even with FUNi apparently having a partially dubbed Buu kai done. Maybe there is a push for U.S distribution rights Ocean Kai and that could be holding the whole Kai licence up or even Canadian rights?
Has anyone asked about a Ocean super? It's a stretch but seeing as FUNi not talking about a release of even having the rights to their dub yet (100% speculation but a fun idea to toy with)

I have if the hold up could be due to dubbing the Buu saga. It's possible! Hopefully the answer is yes. But I didn't ask about Super unfortunately.eledoremassis02 wrote:I was just reading the FUNi Buu kai thread and was wondering if perhaps there is a jam up because of FUNi/Ocean Kai? What I would hope is that Funimation would assist Ocean or Toei with possible licensing issues. I don't see why not if Ocean provided the editing services and also, they aren't really in competition at this point.

I would think so too. Pehaps they're wanted to release it on dvd and bluray (if it's a good as they say) and thats whats holding it up as it seems to be a TV only dub. How was the censorship on Nick? I never seen it so I'm not sure how different the uncut is

All things considered, the editing was pretty tasteful. There was only two or three edits that I immediately noticed, otherwise it was just minor stuff that, had I not gone online and looked it up, I never would have noticed. A few such examples...eledoremassis02 wrote:How was the censorship on Nick? I never seen it so I'm not sure how different the uncut is
-All blood is gone. What they re-colored it to appear as varies from scene to scene...sometimes whiteish-blue to look like sweat, sometimes brown to look like dirt, and sometimes they just re-colored it to the corresponding color of what was underneath the blood (in essence, just removing it).
-Roshi's drink in the first episode was re-colored to look like milk.
-Some overly violent moments were just cut entirely, but again, we're talking things like a punch to the face here and there.
Very general edits that you'd expect. They were never distracting, over-the-top, or silly.
The 4Kids/Toonzai/Vortexx airing, though, which took the Nicktoons-edited version and made even more edits....now those were some distracting, over-the-top, and silly edits. I swear, that editing department must have some of the most easily-offended people in the world. They replaced halos with glowing balls, replaced Farmer With Shotgun's shotgun with a laser blaster, re-colored Popo blue to avoid accusations of blackface, added sparkles to Chaotzu's sacrifice explosion, and thought Freeza had a penis.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

So which known Ocean Kai recast so far was the most disheartening to you guys??

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Interesting question! I felt disheartened a while ago that Ian Corlett wasn't returning. I got over that though cause, (trying to be as objective as I can) his screams let him down, and he hated doing them. I find it a bit strange that Terry Klassen might not get to play Krillin again. I felt his voice was a somewhat decent fit. His first time around, mainly in the Pioneer films, he wasn't over the top like in the Westwood dub.
Gotta admit, I'd be pretty bummed if Don Brown didn't return as Shenron. He was amazing in that part. Although, I would be okay if he was replaced as King Kai.
Which possible recasts are you (and anyone) looking forward to?
I've just started 'Black Lagoon' and the guy who plays Dutch, Dean Redman, seems like he has all the right qualities to play Cell.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
For now the castings seem pretty solid but I will say that I'm going to miss Ted Cole's 17 and Matt Hill's Tien. Matt Hill had questionable moments throughout Z but with better direction I think he'd be great. His voice certainly doesn't sound as vanilla/bland as the others and a youthful sounding TIen is more preferable to me than an older/gruff sounding voice.
Hopefully Ted Cole at least reprises Yamcha but that's a role that's not so important so I can forgive a recast there.
David Kaye's Recoome is another one I'll miss but so long as the new version doesn't sound as moronic as Sabat's it'll be fine.
Can't really say much more than that since we don't have a full cast list yet.

Had McNeil not come back I think Redman would have been a fine replacement for Piccolo. I'm not convinced he'd make a good Cell though, especially the earlier forms.SX10 wrote:I've just started 'Black Lagoon' and the guy who plays Dutch, Dean Redman, seems like he has all the right qualities to play Cell.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Ah, yeah of course without a full cast list this is a bit more difficult. It's funny though. Cause for me Ted Cole is perfect when it comes to Yamcha. I don't mind him losing the part of 17 to a much more youthful actor.
Isle what you mean about Redman, but at the same time I feel he has a deep voice and an eloquent way of putting himself across. He might make a good perfect cell. In the earlier forms, it's possible. Just a suggestion though

I was disheartened about Kirby Morrow not returning even though he auditioned since i felt he got screwed over to the point i almost lost all interest until recently
and Don Brown must reprise Shenlong and most of his roles! wouldn't mind a King Kai replacement either.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I think a younger actor will do fine as 17 but I just worry we might be getting (more or less) a repeat of Chuck Huber's version. I always thought his take lacked the sarcastic tone and nonchalant vibe that we got with Ted' Cole's 17 and it's for those reasons why Ted's remains my favourite. He also just had a very cool sounding voice and I fear Cole Howard's delivery might be too high pitched and youthful to have the same effect. I could be proven wrong on that so we'll (hopefully) see how it turns out.SX10 wrote:It's funny though. Cause for me Ted Cole is perfect when it comes to Yamcha. I agree that his Yamcha is pretty much perfect but I can't see them bringing back an Ocean actor just to do a small role like that, especially since Tien has pretty much been confirmed as recast. It would be a nice surprise if he was brought back but if that's the case I hope he got to do something else as well.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
It sounds like what happened is that they're using actors based in Vancouver ("the Ocean cast") for the bigger, more significant roles, and using actors based in Toronto ("the Blue Water cast") for the lesser roles. At what point a role becomes "lesser" is not entirely clear, though. I mean, sure, Yamcha isn't a huge part in the grand scheme of things, but on the other hand, Nappa has even less screen time, and we already know from a publicly-posted resume that his original Ocean voice, Michael Dobson, came back to play him.
So I dunno, I think there's still a good chance that Ted Cole will come back as Yamcha if they're defining Nappa as a significant role. Not a guarantee, of course. Yajirobe has, I believe, more screen time than Nappa, and Brian Drummond already said that while he got to play Vegeta again, they're using a Toronto actor for Yajirobe this time around. So, who knows?
........"So, who knows?" That should be the official slogan of this dub.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming.
I want this, but I doubt we're getting it at this point. It really seams like for some reason funi and ocean decided not to do this. We need some sort of update at this point because it's been FOREVER since it was announced. Funi says we're getting a kai buu saga funi dub,but doesn't do it,ocean says they'll do kai,but the UK TV's air funi dub instead according to UK friends on xbox. I doubt ocean is doing kai buu saga or any of the sagas but I'll watch it in a heartbeat if it happens. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

I don't think this actually has been announced though. Neither has FUNi's Buu Kai dub. The existence of each was leaked by voice actors. But the companies themselves haven't officially announced anything as far as I know.LSSJGODSSJ4Gogeta wrote:We need some sort of update at this point because it's been FOREVER since it was announced.
