I believe you need to actually own the cards and scan them in order to use them in the apps.

Honestly, my only interest in the game is the fact that it's given us some supplemental world building info for the series. It revealed the planet/race for the little yellow aliens from one of the first few episodes of Super. SO I'll be keeping an eye out for more cases like this.
