Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Him developing a plan of acquiring takoyaki for Beerus is not random. Him jumping into the ocean, instantly grabbing a giant octopus, putting on chef clothes that came out of nowhere, and cooking like an expert is. It's like in those western cartoons when a character digs into his back-pocket and pulls out a rocket launcher or something. It doesn't matter how well it fits into the context; it's random and weird.Doctor. wrote:It didn't come out of nowhere. The idea came from Beerus enjoying the takoyaki that he ate before. The idea didn't pop into his mind randomly like you're saying.fadeddreams5 wrote:It's just something I don't expect from Vegeta, at all. Not so much knowing how to cook, but randomly dropping into the ocean, putting on a chef uniform, and showing off his cooking skills is something that completely falls outside his usual pattern of behavior, so I just see it as... out of character. =P
Someone else used the Piccolo driving example to imply fans can be hypocrites or something. I was explaining why I find one funny and the other not.Faustus wrote: But, see, there's a world of difference between that and the two Vegeta situations. The humor in the former case is derived from Piccolo -- a stoic, self-serious type hailing from another world -- being plopped into a comic and totally foreign context for various contrapuntal effects. With the bingo-dance and cooking scenes, it's not clashing context but Vegeta's own break from character that constitutes the meat of the comic intent. He's supposed to be out-of-character. It's supposed to make you uncomfortable, just as it does Vegeta.
Now, of course, you're well at liberty to say you don't think they were particularly funny bits, but to point out that Vegeta's acting out-of-character when that is exactly the point seems like a misguided complaint.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

A thread approaching 500 pages is probably not the best place to ask something like this. But I suppose you could ask me.FutureGohanSSJ2 wrote:Could I speak with VegettoEX or another trustworthy moderator, please? I have a very important question regarding Dragon Ball Super.

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
For a while now, I have been arguing with people online about DBS anime vs manga. Apparently, there's some online video going around that claims that Toriyama sent out some draft to both Toyotaro and TOEI animation, and many are claiming that the anime is adding in "filler" and that therefore the manga must be following this said draft to a T, therefore the manga is canon and the anime is not. However, it was my understanding that it was that manga that was the adaptation of the anime this time, and not vice versa, and also that Toriyama is overseeing the anime, not Toyotaro's manga. I believe the anime is the canon version. But a lot of people are claiming otherwise. I was hoping I could find some concrete proof here.TripleRach wrote:A thread approaching 500 pages is probably not the best place to ask something like this. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
If you go back to the original announcement and press release, it's pretty clear that Super was only announced as an anime, and that's what the primary product is. There was nothing about a new manga or Toyotarou anywhere. The announcement for the manga adaptation came three weeks later.FutureGohanSSJ2 wrote:For a while now, I have been arguing with people online about DBS anime vs manga. In looking for those, I came across these comments about Toriyama's "draft" and I wonder if that's the source of the confusion.
We don't know anything about this "draft" or how it was distributed to various parties. Japanese is vague enough about plurality that it's not necessarily a single document, and later comments suggest that it's an on-going process on Toriyama's end. All we know for certain is that Toriyama has new ideas, and both the anime and manga are based on those ideas. We don't know the exact contents of these ideas he's drafting, so there's no way of knowing which version is closer to those original ideas. For all we know the manga is taking far more liberties than the anime is, perhaps to differentiate itself to sell V Jumps and eventually tankoubon, or because 15 pages per month allows more time for creative freedom than 20 minutes of animation per week.V-Jump Comicalizes the New “Dragon Ball” Anime From Akira Toriyama’s Story Draft
The new “Dragon Ball” anime series, Dragon Ball Super, from original author Akira Toriyama is receiving a comicalized serialization, which is set to start in the August 2015 issue of V-Jump (Shueisha) on June 20th. It will be written by Toyotarō, who worked on the comicalization of the Dragon Ball Z: Revival of “F” movie in this magazine.
The stage for the Dragon Ball Super anime, the first new “Dragon Ball” series in 18 years, follows Goku’s fierce battle with Majin Buu, where peace has once again fallen over the Earth. Based on a draft by Toriyama, the [new series] will be broadcast on Sundays at 9 a.m. on Fuji TV this July.
Toyotarou obviously has access to some level of insider information before the episodes air on TV, but there's no evidence that he has any direct relationship with Toriyama. In the manga chapters, Toriyama is only credited as 原作 (creator), the same as he has been on every DB product over the last 30 years. This implies that Toriyama probably has even less involvement than he did for Episode of Bardock, because he also had a 監修 (supervisor) credit for that manga.
And of course there's the fact that canon is a really tricky subject for the Dragon Ball franchise... Maybe it's worth noting that Toriyama did call Super "a complete continuation of the Majin Buu story arc" in the July 1st article, and only acknowledged the TV series in the same message.
If I had to personally guess what the Super food chain is, based on the information available, I would assume it's:
Toriyama -> Toei -> Shueisha/Toyotarou

Regarding Toriyama's draft, there's also this comment from the announcement.
Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki commented on the new series as well, saying, “As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear...”

Absolutely, the F arc will likely be 12 episodes just like the BoG arc, meaning it will end late December.Noah wrote:Maybe we will we see Golden Freeza in DBS this year yet?

Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
The top one has too many low-res kanji, but the bottom looks something to the effect of what was shown in the preview; something like 'Vegeta watches the battle between Gokû and Beerus high in the sky above him. Whis approaches him and tries to pick his brain.'' or to that effect. I could be wrong though; I'm not that good at translating yet.Sodhi wrote:Can anyone tell me what does it say about episode 12. Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
I typed out the bottom into text if anyone wants to google translate or just can't see the kanji:
ベジータに気を遣う!?
上空を見上げながら悟空とビルスの闘いを見つめるベジータ。首が痛くないかと、ウイスが声をかけるのだが!?
The bottom bit is disappointingly uninformative, but basically: "Worried about Vegeta?! Vegeta is looking up at the sky watching Goku and Beerus fight. Whether it is about his sore neck or not, but Whis goes to speak to him." Something like that.
Let me see if I can decipher the top bits of kanji. Was more interested about the Whis/Vegeta bits.
Some more:
Large Text: 宇宙崩壊!?凄まじきふたりのパワーが激突!
The Universe collapses? The terrific clash of two powers!
Main text:
成層圏の限界地点に戦闘場所を変え、再び闘い出す悟空とビルス!ぶつかり合うふたりの超絶パワーで宇宙が破壊されそうになり
Nothing really interesting here either: Goku and Beerus are fighting at the very edge of the stratosphere now, the universe is likely to be destroyed by the clash of two transcendent powers!

My translation isn't great, so keep that in mind. I hope things are right and I think that is the gist of it, but someone might do a better job. That said, I really don't think this blurb has any shocking revelations.

Oooh, exciting! Guessing these are just the "short-form" versions of the titles rather than the full thing.
Since it seems the Battle of Gods arc will be finished by ep. 12/13, I'm very much looking forward to seeing what's next. Will we be jumping straight into the Resurrection 'F' arc, or will we have some episodes of training/downtime in-between?
Can't wait until some kind soul provides translations! = )

Can't wait to see those titles translated, also really want to see what the description of Episode 13 says!
Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion
Hopefully one of these is Vegeta going Ssjg.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

Really excited to see what the titles are, especially since I think that Episode 13 is going to be the end of the BoG arc more than 12 considering how the latest manga chapter was and how much the Next Episode Preview showed.
