Julian, Heath, and Jake. In that order.
I'm kidding, of course. Or am I. The world will never know. But seriously.
Mr. Satan is my real answer. I definitely fall into that camp of not "getting" the character initially and finding myself more and more annoyed with each subsequent appearance, and then completely flipping my opinion entirely.

Do you remember what caused that change?VegettoEX wrote:Mr. Satan is my real answer. I definitely fall into that camp of not "getting" the character initially and finding myself more and more annoyed with each subsequent appearance, and then completely flipping my opinion entirely.
Sometimes I change my opinion of a story or character after seeing the whole series, but usually when my assessment changes it's because the character changes or something is revealed which colors my earlier views. For instance, I disliked Mr. Satan when I first saw him. The guy was a blowhard, and obnoxiously kept claiming everything was a trick in spite of the evidence in front of him and even took credit for Cell's defeat. However, in the next arc, we see his love for his daughter and he proves his worth several times over by the end of the series. Now that I know where he ends up, I no longer have the same feelings of annoyance in the Cell arc. That doesn't always happen. Sometimes even if a character makes a change that makes them interesting later in a series, I can still find it hard to watch them from earlier parts. For instance, Tara from Buffy is a very annoying character early on, but becomes infinitely more interesting and likable when she grows a backbone, but I still don't care about her when i watch her earlier appearances.

I think for me, my opinion of Mr. Satan was changed simply by time and looking at the series in a different light. The first time through, everything seemed like srsbsns to me (even when there were jokes), and him being there just felt like dragging dead weight or something. Looking at the series later on made me appreciate the tone he brought to the series: highlighting the aspects of the contrast of the normal world and the dragon world and how for this world to function as it does there needs to be some illusion of normalcy. It is also more of a meta joke, I feel which I like a lot more as I age than I did as a kid.

Now that I think on it, I think I also hated Mr. Satan (well, Her-cule to me at the time) at some point in my younger days, but I was okay with him once the Boo arc rolled around I think. If not right away, I was definitely pretty enthused once I got to see him yell out at the populace of Earth during the fight against Kid Boo.
Thinking back on it too, there was actually a time I wasn't too fond of Kuririn either (shocking, I know), but that was mostly cuz people kept comparing me to him. I'd take that as a compliment now.

The entire series during my young teen days. Before even watching it, I thought it was for kids (it is, I thought I wouldn't be able to enjoy it though) and the only reasons my classmates liked it was nostalgia. Which, admittedly, was pretty hypocritical of me because I really liked the Shin Budokai game I had. I think my distaste (not hate, though) towards the series came from my friends roleplaying when they were kids, and I could barely ever join in because I didn't watch it
. Suffice it to say, that once I was properly introduced to the series by a close friend, when I was like 13, that I ended up loving it.

I think there isn't anything that grew on me overtime, when something does not catch my attention/I do not like, I am generally neutral to it, so I just ignore.
It is the case of Galick Jr, his movie (watched just once) and his saga (never watched a single episode entirely)... Never liked them at all, I think they are pretty boring, but I did/do not hate, until this day I am neutral to the character and all of his appearances.

Re: Things you hated, but then they grew on you overtime.
The Red Ribbon Army arc used to be boring to me because Goku just runs through enemies left and right with only Blue and Tao Pai Pai putting up much of a fight. Now I've come around to it, and it was by listening to the Manga Review of Awesomeness.
I also came around to liking Sonny Strait as Kuririn. I don't know why he used to bug me. Maybe it's because a lot of the bad dialog he got stuck with.
While "grew on you overtime" implies longer than a few days, I would still qualify things that fall under the category of "acquired tastes" as growing on me over time. For DBZ, a number of the JPN voices such as Masako Nozawa took some getting used to.

Chi-Chi. The dub and filler made her more annoying than she really is, but once I started watching the original version of Dragon Ball, I really grew to like her hickish style of speaking and personality.
Re: Things you hated, but then they grew on you overtime.
Having watched DBZ before Dragonball, I didn't really understand why Roshi, Oolong, etc. were all popular characters because they hardly did anything. Then after watching Dragonball they became some of my favorites.

At first I despised Budokai 2 for not being more like its predecessor. Looking back I can really appreciate it though. Budokai 2 was truly a sweet spot in between a slow, plodding Tekken Clone and Teleporting Dragon Rush 3. The story mode was a loose adaptation of the series but that's why I like it. There's a ton of fun what-if dialogue and scenarios. The character models are really nice and lay somewhere in between their manga and anime counterparts as far as coloration goes. There's a capsule cheat for those of us who aren't legally insane. The game also comes across as very balanced ( admittedly that kind of thing isn't my forte so I could just be talking out of my ass). Nowadays DBZ games seem to be entirely obsessed with "feeling like Dragon Ball" at a detriment to everything else. Budokai 2 strikes a really good balance of feeling like Dragon Ball while at the same time not being a giant pile.

Mr. Satan, movie 4, and a good chunk of the Buu arc.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I guess I'll add Gotenks to this list. Didn't really care for him before, but now I think he's one of the more entertaining characters with some of the most creative techniques in the series.

I still dislike Gotenks and the concept of kid SSJs to this day. =D

Vegeta. I couldn't stand him at all, especially during the Cyborg and Cell arcs. Then he suddenly became my favourite character in the Boo arc. Then I re-watched the Saiyan and Freeza arc in Japanese and started to appreciate the character more than ever, and he's become my favourite Anime anti-hero.

Re: Things you hated, but then they grew on you overtime.
While not exactly "hated" i didn´t like BOG at first, it was a 4/10 (it was my least favourite favourite DB movie) but then, after some rewatches and manga re-read of DB it became my favourite movie(alongside Wrath of the Dragon) and now i also considered it as the best of all movies (9/10).
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.
Re: Things you hated, but then they grew on you overtime.
I didn't like early DBZ/Saiyan saga that much when I was a kid. I was a huge powerup-fag, that kid who was all DB AF, Goku SSJ 999999999 and chill. I also didn't like the art style. I thought some of the early movies (like Turles or Dr. Willow) were cringy, but gladly now they're some of my favourites.
But hey, in my Elementary school in Italy we all were Power-up fags, so this isn't surprising
(Of course I changed my mind as the years went by... heh
)
Then Garlic Jr.'s arc... not the movie, but just the filler saga itself. I used to find it very boring and cringeworth... but just a month ago, with a rewatch, I revalued it. It's not one of my favourites, but still I don't hate it like I did.

I didn't like the Arlia episode when I was younger but now I think it really works as a way of hyping up the kind of bad guys the heroes will be facing in the future in both power and how they operate.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.
