Norihito Sumitomo vs Miklos Rosza Similarities

Post by Black_Liger » Thu Sep 24, 2015 12:16 am

Ever since I listened to Sumitomo´s orchestral score in Dragon ball, I have noticed that his style sometimes resembles Movie Score Legend Miklos. Miklos Rosza is a movie score legend that score lots of the most famous biblical movies of all time. Like Ben Hur, King of Kings, ect. Since the current arcs deal with deities and such, I think this approach is freaking great. Without further ado. Here is a video with the proof.

This is why really get disgusted when they call his style bland lol.

You know out of all the dbz composers we have he is my absolute favorite. I love every bit of his work. Sure his kai score had to grow on me but his super score oh my god I already love it!. Anywho brilliant comparison

Wow, I never noticed that. That's a good ear you've got Black_Liger.

I've also really enjoyed Sumitomo's Super score so far.

You're cherry-picking, though. You're taking Sumitomo's most interesting work and using it to invalidate complaints made against the general bulk of his recent contributions to the series. For every grandiose, beautifully orchestrated moment, there's many, many more instances of bland, synthesised rubbish. That's what people take issue with. Any complaints launched against the work you've referenced in your video generally boil down to "This doesn't feel like Dragon Ball", which is arguably pretty accurate.

This track from Super sounds like an iteration of his Super Saiyan 3 track from Kai. While the former version is certainly better, both are just as painfully generic as the other. It sounds like the kind of music you'd find under a stock "JRPG Boss Music" pack.

Goku's arrival features utterly abysmal music. There's nothing noteworthy about it, at all. It sounds like a subpar throwback to the worst kind of 80s music. Compare it to the unique quality that Kikuchi's music has, and surely you can understand why Sumitomo gets a lot of flack. It's just not the kind of music you expect from an industry professional -- especially one capable of producing the quality tracks you linked, yourself.

Sumitomo is at his best when he's scoring serious or emotional scenes. He can't do lighthearted well, at all. That would be fine if Dragon Ball were serious 90% of the time, but it's not. That means that we have to suffer through a huge number of painfully poor tracks before we hit a point at which he's comfortable again.

Nobody's incorrect -- the majority of Sumitomo's Dragon Ball work is bland. That's not invalidating all of his exceptional work, but it's still a very fair comment. You have no reason to be "disgusted" when that opinion is thrown away. It may be a generalising statement, but it's accurate for a majority of his Dragon Ball work.

The only Sumitomo tracks you listed that were painfully poor and ear numbing were the Goku arrival ones. I prefer that SSJ3 track and SSJG variant over a lot of Kikuchi's tracks; I freakin' love JRPG boss music. I definitely wouldn't consider that bland. And that "Angel" theme you played during Goku's arrival is one of the exceptions from the Japanese version of DBZ that I adore. It stands out from the rest of Kikuchi's themes, so it's not really indicative of anything, imo. =P
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

@Naruto,

I know right, he's beeng growing on me, his lighthearted stuff sometimes need work, but I have almost no complains from his Super Score. (Pun not intended)

@ Thanks lord beerus! I appreciate it! :D

@ Ajay I always like your insight on everything, you give valid points, but I don't agree on the fact that you treat most of Sumitomo's tracks like garbage, I personally like the JRPG like stuff a lot, but that's just me, and I can respect you don't like it. I only made one comment about "This is why really get disgusted when they call his style bland lol." As only a side comment, and a funny one at that, the main theme of this thread is the similatiries of some sumitomo tracks and Rozsa's. I would like your insight on it as well. :P

@ fadeddreams

I definitely agree on everything you say (And Angel is one of my favorite kikuchi tracks too!

Oh wow, nice comparison. You can definitely tell that he grabs inspiration from several different pieces of music and creates his own with it, unlike a certain someone who outright plagiarises *cough*Yamamoto*cough*, sorry, I have a sore throat. :P

I love Sumitomo's work, he's definitely my favourite Dragon Ball composer. As for the comparison with Kikuchi, I was never a fan of his music to begin with so I definitely prefer Sumitomo. Sure, he had a few poor tracks for Buu Kai but most of the time I was loving the stuff he was making. He did a great job with the movies as well and the pieces he's making for Super are the best I've heard from him so far.
