Piccolo's ENG dub voice opinion

Post by SilverPlaqueVII » Fri Oct 02, 2015 11:24 pm

Realizing Chris Sabat's Piccolo character was sounded as rough in the early days. However, when Kai aired, Sabat's voice as Piccolo seemed to be improved and sounded natural than the early Z dub een BoG.

His line by Sabat from BoG:
"He dropped his God form to a mere Super Saiyan!"

So do you prefer the rough Piccolo of the 2000s or the natural, intelligent Kai Piccolo? I prefer the Kai one.

I have a soft spot for his more rugged performance but ultimately, I appreciate his Kai voice more.

Much prefer his modern take. The old voice just felt like a failed attempt to sound like Scott McNeil.

I love Scott McNeil's Piccolo, but I don't like Chris Sabat trying to imitate Scott McNeil like he was originally assigned to do. I much prefer Chris Sabat doing is own take on the character (which is what he does nowadays). I have a lot more respect for his work now than I do his early work simply because he isn't required to imitate his predecessor anymore.

Same goes for most of the current FUNi DBZ dub cast, really. Most of them are more able to translate the feel of the character into English much better nowadays.

In Kai, Sabat's Piccolo slips into Zoro a bit too much. I'm usually not the one to notice these things, so it says a lot on how similar the voice is.

It's absolutely better nowadays. The older voice was too rough, mumble mouthed, and trying to sound monsterous. Now, it sounds smoother, deeper, and overall much more believable.

A little bit, yeah, but that doesn't make me dislike the voice at all. Especially when both characters are played very differently.

The Z voice was garbage. It turned Piccolo from a wise, intelligent loner badass into a brutish ogre. The modern Sabat Piccolo is good but somewhat hampered by the fact that he has to keep himself from sounding like Vegeta and vice versa.

McNeil is still the superior voice to me. It has a demonic quality to it as well as all the ones mentioned above.

In Z it was perfect, best at the buu saga and cell games. In kai it sounds like Sabat put sand paper on his throat and doesn't care anymore. His performance in battle of gods sounded like a fandub honestly.

I think a good comparison is to listen to Piccoo speech to Goku in the cell games about Gohan not being a fighter.

Z-emotional

kai-indifferent.

Go compare em if you want. Z sounds 9001x better.

It's the best performance in modern DB dubbing, give or take Chris Ayres or Sonny Strait(Krillin only) having a good day.

Kai and the post-2009 video games managed to salvage Piccolo's big Z scenes(and I guess we'll see how the Buu arc goes a gazillion years from now), now if only there was a way to redub the first series and fix his introductory arc. And maybe, just maaaaybe, get a new guy in there for Daimao.

McNeil's and 2010 "Inteligent" Sabat's are better than the old Sabat version.

I like his older performance but I don't hate the new performance either. I'm also a pretty big fan of the VA of Piccolo in Ocean. :)

This is what i think of his Piccolo - the names of the people who made the below comments are censored for obvious reasons:

"Scott McNeil wins easily, Chris Sabat doesn't sound remotely engaged, battle-ready or threatening."

"An impressive yawn from Mr. Sabat."

"Yay....another character done by adding Sabat's "unique" deep voice e_e...Scott McNeil please"

Kai Piccolo is leaps and bounds the best English voicing that Piccolo has ever had. Sabat nailed the character in Kai.

I'm young enough to only have heard samples of Scott McNeil's Piccolo (I grew up on many of his voices on Fox/Kids' WB!), but by God is it glorious!

I dig Christopher Robin's 2010+ take on it, but it is Lord McNeil's rendition that I would regard as superior to the creator-chosen Japanese-language performance (by Toshio Furukawa).

2/10: 1999 Sabat
4-5/10: 2004-6 Sabat
7-8/10: 2008-10+Sabat/later Furukawa
9+/10: 1989-97 "classic" Furukawa
10- : Pre-1999 FUNimation (incl. Pioneer-distributed movies) dub- Scott McNeil

I haven't heard (or rather, I don't recall the voices of) the Canada-produced Ocean dubs, but I do plan to. I do plan to. Lord McNeil is Godly

Scott McNeil's Piccolo would not have suited the Piccolo character in later arcs. Much like how the Ocean Vegeta wouldn't have either.

Chris Sabat is great as Piccolo, and then blew it away in Kai.

I have a different opinion on good acting then. Kai piccolo sounds like his emotional coach is Kristen stewart.

Old Z piccolo had a better sounding voice and was back when sabat actually cared about dubbing still. Either it's his age or lack of intrest but the an doesn't seam to put his A game in ANYTHING since raging blast. Once raging blast 2 started the quality in ALL the funimation voices dropped. Even kid buu sounds like he's bored when you listen to him after his Z voice. :/

that's an insult to Kristen Stewart

But i agree,i think he makes Piccolo sound monotone and he doesn't give him any character except "cynical" but even then the voice doesnt sound good imo

RB2 was the one with Linda Young AND Chris Ayres in the same cut scene right?
