Favorite leitmotif?

Post by DB1984 » Mon Sep 07, 2015 9:03 pm

Anyone have a favorite leitmotif?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leitmotif

Mine's is Tao Pai Pai's leitmotif from the film The Mystical Great Adventure. I also like General Blue's, Tao's original one from the Red Ribbon Army arc, Sleeping Princess', Piccolo Daimao's, Saiyan's, Garlic Jr.'s, and Cooler's (especially from the 6th movie). Note that I am going by the original Japanese score by Kikuchi.

I have a deep dislike for Vegeta, but my favorite theme in Z is his: "Hell's Bells"

I love Mike's Heroic Trunks melody:

I was heartbroken when it got rejected from use in the episodes.

For the original score, it would be these:

Piccolo's theme
Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle's main theme
Garlic Jr. and Kami's motifs from Dead Zone
Wheelo's motif from World's Strongest
The Tree and Turles' motifs from The Tree of Might
Tapion's theme

Also, if we're including certain musical ideas that aren't exactly reoccurring motifs in the sense that they have various renditions but are single pieces reused multiple times in the series, then you can throw in that Spirit Bomb theme introduced in Tree of Might as well.

As for the dub score, while I'm not a huge fan of it, I did like the way Majin Buu's theme was handled. Throughout the course of that saga, he had that single musical idea that started off deceptively innocent but then gradually shifts to more chaotic and sinister arrangements with each new form introduced. The aforementioned Trunks material is nice too.

Other than "Hells Bells" my favorite would have to be "Cell Returns".

Don't know if any of this counts. First time I've heard of a letitmotif.
"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

A leitmotif is basically just a reoccurring musical theme. They're used to represent certain ideas, characters, conflicts, and so on. Like when you watch Star Wars and you hear a different rendition of the Force's theme in various cues whenever the subject of the Jedi and the Skywalker family is being focused on. Sometimes, a variant of a theme can be presented quite restrained and/or fragmented too, serving as a subtle hint to whatever they're associated with.

Frieza's theme from Faulconer Productions.
"My dear friend, how can I make this even more painful for you? I could crush your hands, rip off both of your ears, or maybe I'll just smash in your tiny little cranium. Ehehehehehehehe."

Piccolo's hands down. It can be dark and threatening or it can be badass. There are a number of other emotions it can convey depending on how it's played but those are the two the jump to mind.
The biggest truths aren't original. The truth is ketchup. It's Jim Belushi. Its job isn't to blow our minds. It's to be within reach.
