I once came close to convincing my school's DBZ guru (this was seventh grade) that my fanfics were part of a new anime. The only clue I got that he doubted at all came when I slipped up about where I'd gotten them from (I had forgotten I'd told him one place, and then said a different one...). This does not make me clever, just an ass. :(

Late 199/early 2000, I was hearing quite vague rumors, like there were characters called Trunks and Cell, and Vegeta had a son. Consequently, my conclusions were that these were three separate characters who would all be villains, Vegeta just kinda came back from space with a son somehow, and Cell was the only one that really mattered, being some manner of final boss.

I favored using Dragonball X as the title for my fanfiction, until I googled it (or Yahoo!ed... I think that's what we were using at the time...). I was around 13/14 at said time, but honestly the never-ending pile of alert boxes in Spanish and me having to ctrl alt del to escape made the only real clue as to what I'd narrowly avoided being the word "pornigraphico" in one of those alerts.

I like UB22 enough that, after my ps1 that could handle imports stopped working, I went for the US version. Even with my vision crappy, I was well aware of the horrible quality of the graphis, but really, watching Recoome's out-of-sync mouthflaps was hilarious enough to make up for it.

My first copy of Legends for the PS1 came with a slip of paper that declared "this is not a bootleg". Considering that it tended to freeze during the intro and none of the menu/story BGM played, and it eventually just started freezing all the time, I am not convinced that yon slip of paper was being particularly honest with me.
I think I wound up with two copies of the Saturn version, though, which do not appear to be bootlegs. Whew.

I like Bulma and the crab, and kinda wish it wasn't filler on the grounds that Bulma weaponizing giant crabs has potential in areas that tend to disregard filler.
Oh, and Space Orphans / Fake Namek. I like those, too.

Gohan/Goten/Trunks being left on Earth as Kid Buu blows it up is something I am willing to grasp at straws to make non-lethal. Piccolo retaining some Kami power and coming to enough to BAMF them to the afterlife? Chaozu hijacking Popo's magic carpet and magicking them into space, protected by a telekinetic bubble until the Earth is restored? The blast ripping a hole in reality that sends them into Emperor Palpatine's throne room? All fine by me!

I rather watch DBE over the Dragon Ball: The Magic Begins. It's funny how the Ultimate Edition came out in 2007 and it has CG that looks like it came out in the early 90's (Before Jurassic Park). At least DBE didn't made my brain hurt with the bad dubbing and the terrible CG (DBE had shitty effects but the special effects are Transformers compare to the CG in The Magic Begins). I think the live-action Korean film adaptation is the best Dragon Ball live action movie which is not saying a whole lot.

I didn't care much for either. DBE was just a bland quasi-superhero movie that wasn't bad enough to be memorable. The Magic Begins certainly felt like a Dragon Ball movie since it was just a slightly altered live action version of the first DB movie but it isn't something I would watch more than once. I did remember liking the Monkey Boy and Yamucha-like guy fight. I didn't get to watch the dub of it or version with special effects...maybe I'll watch it again. I've never seen the Korean adaptation, sadly. It looks pretty ridiculous from the screencaps I've seen.

I suppose the "confession" that I don't think I've made sufficiently well known is my enjoyment of the dub for mainly nostlagic reasons. While it does have its merits, if I had no nostlagia for the dub, I probably wouldn't watch it at all, even though I do prefer dubs on the whole because evidently I'm illiterate and can't read subtitles. The acting and the script are generally better in the original version. But when nostalgia takes root in your brain, it does influence your judgment. Unfortunately, I am going to hell for the sins I've committed against Dragon Ball, even though I'm making this confession, for my sins are just too great and I'm unwilling to repent.

I think it's important for this to be absolutely clear because of all the debates or arguments we have on the subject and apologies if I've already talked about it. I am biased, of course (aren't we all, though?), but I do think some of the criticism is unfair. I think, at this point, it's fairly stupid and pointless to be prattling on about how bad the dub is and how uncultured those who watch it are. I would say that the original version is more refined and subtle, but a show about flying monkey-tailed aliens can't be all that refined and subtle anyway. I'm fine with the dub being the butt of a joke -- it's been the butt of countless jokes since "Over 9000" exploded onto the scene and probably before then, and so I don't get my panties in a twist when I hear one. However, if you're going to make a sweeping criticism of the dub without even mentioning the context in which it was produced, then you're going to hear from me.

Get ready to hate me: I like GT and Ultimate Blast. I also don't find DBE as horrible as others say. There, I said it!
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

^I have to agree. As a Dragon Ball film, its "bad" but as its own movie, it's cheesy fun. I wonder if people would like DBE better if it was not based off of Dragon Ball? If they called the movie something else and the characters didn't share the same name as the characters in Dragon Ball.

I believe Vegeta would've been the winner in the Saiyan saga if his dodging skills had been represented more realistically.

I like Dragon ball A Lot more then Dragon ball z, the adventure, the friendship, even the fighting is better IMO

Goten and Trunks should have been born, but should have worked TONS harder to be Super Saiyans, Ruined the whole idea of training, plus Trucks annoys me a lot

I didn't mind GT, i thought he had it's moments, it gets more hate then it deverses

That's not really much of a confession since a decent amount of people think so. I also think the story is better written.

Anyways, my other confessions:

- After the Freeza Saga, my interest in Kai died down and after the Yamamoto lawsuit, I've actively stopped watching altogether because Kikuchi's soundtrack is handled badly (how many times can we hear Piccolo's theme, and they took out Son Gohan and Piccolo's Training Theme  ).

- If it wasn't for Goku, I think Chi-Chi should have went with Kuririn (with Yamcha as a secondary option). Just watch Episode 30 of DBZ, and you'll see why.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

Episode 30 of the original Japanese run? or the Dub?
Check out Journey's End, a short story of Goku and Vegeta's final days. "Time is running out for the last two Saiyans"

Even my art teacher does well. He likes the Dragon Ball manga but he can't stand the DBZ anime. He thought the DBZ manga was okay but he feel like Dragon Ball should have ended when Goku fought Piccolo at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai.

I ask him about it and he said it was good. He said that he never saw Kai but he would like to one day. He hated how DBZ anime had so much filler and wasted most of the story on powering up.

When I was young, the first things Dragon Ball related that I watched were a fan video and Dragon Ball GT. I didn't even know that Goku and Vegeta were aliens at the time. I thought they were weirdly named humans called Saijins. Yep, that was what I heard.

Despite watching the series in 2000s and acknowledge the entire series years later, i've carried my antics with me in real life even high school! Everyone knows that I made a replica of the Saiyan Armor for my school project years ago and made a Capsule-Corp like logo for the student council I was part in.

That's my true story on how I crossed the line between Dragon Ball and real life.
