Yeah the script was really bad early in the dubbing, on par with Sailormoon's dub in terms of crappiness as a lot of the namek saga dialogue made very little coherent sense. Like Goku joking about Ginyu being "Blue" before he was green (frog).... though to my knowledge Ginyu was always purple.
But it wasn't as bad as a lot of Ocean's dialogue where it completely changed the things the characters were doing just by the dialouge they made up rather than translated... like Freeza's Milk and Kittens analogy to ginyu....

Though for funimation the script was somewhat parallel to the original by the cell arc if not at times a bit better than kai's.

And that's an opinion that I don't understand. To me, Nadolny was far more shrill than Colleen.
Nadonly wasnt bad at all for me in terms of preformance, just delivery. The raspiness she gave gohan is the only real issue. I mean her GT Goku; a similar character sounded far better and far less throaty... if she had a higher more child-like pitch to her voice it may have been even better.

If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

I think the SM dub is worse than the original DBZ dub.

Nadolny had more or less ditched the rasp in her Gohan voice by 2002 and I think it sounded much better that way.

Season 3's dialog was terrible, and as bad as some of the Ocean lines were, season 3's dialog was like root canal. I don't have a side by side, but I doubt Z was ever better than Kai. At least the Ocean dub had good actors to mitigate many of the awful lines.

The raspiness is bothersome, but I can get past that if there's a good performance, like Vale as Trunks. I don't think Nadolny is a talented actress, but I'll take her Gohan over Goku any day of the week. Goku's supposed to sound cute, but she doesn't capture any of his charm. The Krusty laugh *shudder*

I suppose I can say Funimation's treatment of the series? As has been pointed out, we wouldn't be having so many of these conversations had they realized the simplicity of their source material and brought Dragon Ball Z over straight.

I was about to say, to take one example as a poster for the whole, the fact that Scott McNeil was in the Ocean cast doesn't negate that this same Scott McNeil is making former demon-spawn namedrop David and Goliath. There was some very random stuff in that dub, easily as out of place as most anything Funimation initially spat out in the in-house dub.

I agree with this, Colleen's good, but the way people talk about her in the role it's as if Nadolny Gohan was second to Linda Young's Freeza. It was not and never was.

The biggest disappointment?

Hhhhmmmmm...

Probably Battle of Gods, for the sheer fact that, while I liked it, it felt like they could have done so much more, it was lacking. :\

They spent too much time on Pilaf and Bulma's party, SSJ God was a letdown, just it was very underwhelming, let's just hope
that Toei and Toriyama would make a sequel.

Oh and no proper 4:3 release of the Namek Arc.

Screw you, Funimation.

The only one of those lines that I would say is on par is "Krillin's in da house!'", and to be fair, that line isn't on any of the official DVDs for the anime to my knowledge. It probably doesn't help that the the whole 'cowboy' line was uttered at a very serious moment in the series.

Well, that's subjective, those lines make me cringe more than Tenshinhan's line. Piccolo's "yes, yes, YES!" was SOOOOO bad and makes me cringe every time I hear it. Many of the lines I mentioned are at serious points in the series. Yeah, Tenshinhan's line is terrible, but the actor's delivery is the worst part of it.

The frequency of season 3's terrible dialog is unmatched.

The big reason I hate the casting decisions is because it created a false impression of those characters. To top it off, for so many, Linda Young is their Freeza. Damn nostalgia.

I think the main reason that Funimation cast Linda Young was because they wanted someone who could imitate Pauline Newstone. Personally, I think Andrew Chandler would have made a great Freeza if his Coola voice was any indication.

I know that, but Newstone was miscast, which is one of my points. Instead of going in a more accurate direction for their in house dub, they went down a similar path.

I too have to say my biggest DB disappointment is FUNimation's localization. I'm so thankful I have this forum and my Dragon Ball Dissection audience to talk Dragon Ball with, but, in real life, ever since I discovered the original version, I have practically NEVER been able to talk DB with anybody. I immediately get excited when I can bring it up and say I like it, but then this feeling of dread comes over me that the conversation will continue any farther than that because it's inevitable some discrepancy between our knowledge will come up. One of us will say something the other one just totally doesn't get, and so the topic will immediately switch to the fact that I only watch the original version... and then we will not be able to talk to each other. And while I've been very lucky to attract an awesome set of fans for my DBD videos, there is still the occasional very unpleasant person who just has to come to my DB videos and say very unpleasant things.
Do you follow the most comprehensive and entertaining Dragon Ball analysis series on YouTube? If you do, you're smart and awesome and fairly attractive. If not, see what all the fuss is about without even having to leave Kanzenshuu:

I dunno, man. I think there's grounding in that argument if a person is adamant that the initial Z dub is the only way to watch the show without showing any awareness of the original or correct translations. To me, that's willful ignorance and in my eyes, I just can't see them as a 'true' fan or whatever you want to call it.

I have no real issue with someone who is fully aware of what the show actually is but instead chooses the Z dub. I might think it's a silly choice but they're just as much a fan as anyone else.

But yeah, willful ignorance. I just can't accept that.
Yeah I agree with you, that's not right, either. I like the Japanase, have the whole manga, and *puts up shield* I still like and prefer the Z dub. Partly nostalgia, partly I don't wanna put out another 100+ dollars for a series I technically own.

Honestly a lot of the complaints towards the Z dub are over exaggerated and not as bad as people say. "Season 3" aka the Freeza Saga may be the dubs worse, but a good amount of the really cheesy dialouge was changed in the uncut, so idk why the 1999 dub is still being used for some examples.

Yeah, it's all good dude! Put your shield down, I may stand almost exclusively with the Japanese version but I grew up on the Ocean/Westwood dub. The latter being undeniably worse than anything Funimation did. I still watch it from time to time out of pure nostalgia, I totally get it!

I will go off on a rant if someone insults Nozawa or claims the Hope of the Universe speech is in any way better than the original lines though. There's only so much I can handle

Why would you need to go on a rant for that? People have different opinions, besides it's just an anime, no need to get worked up about what other people think.

We're on an anime board for a show that's approaching its 30th anniversary. I think it's more than 'just an anime' to a lot of people here. I'm passionate about the show and I take issue with opinions that look negatively on the original or claim a heavily butchered product that divided a fan base is in any way superior.

I'll be diplomatic about it but I'm not going to pretend it doesn't bother me.

The point of my post though, is that people will always have different opinions regarding certain things. That's just how the human race works, there's always bound to be people who have differing opinions that we may not agree with and as long as they are not being disrespectful, they have as much a right as any one else to express their opinions. Besides, the majority of people on this website, including me do not agree with the notion that the dub is superior to the original, so there's no need to get frustrated by what some people on Youtube or something might think. Anyways, I think I'm just about done commenting on this thread, this seems to have gotten a bit off topic.

I don't disagree. I've never claimed they don't have a right to that opinion, I'm just saying that some opinions bother me. I may want to debate it respectfully with that person on this forum and that's perfectly fine too. People get frustrated with others' opinions, that's human nature too. I don't really understand what you're getting at here?

If we just went 'oh, that's your opinion, alright okay, done' then there'd be no debates, no discussion and no forum. The whole point of this place and any fan forum is to discuss news and debate and argue over opinions.
