Ha! Yeah, we'll be lucky to get a spine image.

I just don't get it. The Kanzeban covers will obviously move more books off of the shelves. I don't think some kid looking for a "new" manga to get into is going to find these covers nearly as appealing as the Kanzeban images or any of the other vastly superior Toriyama drawings.

And as for the typeface for "Dragonball" and "Dragonball Z"? If I turned those into my teacher I think I'd be kicked out of my major.

Okay, I am NOT freaking kidding - I had a dream whereI saw those covers, and I was so glad it was a dream. It unfortunately seems not though... :(
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Sure, if they're unedited and have colour chapters, it doesn't really matter what the covers look like. But damn, those are fucking awful.

The hard work is already done!, Toriyama is an amazing artist, all you have to do is come up with a suitable layout, some appropriate typography, and a nice colour scheme.

But no, the intern with mspaint and a magazine with some Dragonball pictures he can cut out is definitely the way to go.
They probably don't think English speaking consumers even know of the existence of the kanzenban since it was released in Japan. But since we're dedicated fans, we've probably known longer than them.

They'll probably use the covers for a later release or something. I don't know how Viz markets their manga, but if it's anything like FUNI's anime...

But now the only question I have is whether or not this "VIZ Big" set will have the kanzenban ending. So far it just looks like someone increased the page size and put some of the color back, as opposed to actually using the edited/final/directors cut kanzenban pages.

I hope they are planning a Kazenban release, that must be the reason for them not using those covers.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

Brad Redfield wrote:I'm interested in how they're going to keep this up for fourteen volumes.
Fourteen volumes? Going from what you said, do you think it's safe to assume the following setup?

- DB (16 volumes / 3 tankoubon per Viz Big volume): Four 3-volume releases + One 4-volume release
- DBZ (26 volumes / 3 tankoubon per Viz Big volume): Eight 3-volume releases + One 2-volume release

Keeping in mind that volume 16 of DB is already a bit longer than usual since they crammed in the rest of the Piccolo/Goku fight in there, I think that final DB volume is kinda pushing the limit of the spine. The final DBZ volume seems like it'll be alright, though since the last two volumes are a bit longer than usual anyways.
Then there's the image on the spine to be considered as well.
Well, the Kenshin volume's just got a black and white manga image of Kenshin for the first volume. The same will probably go for these volumes, too. While it would be really awesome if they did, I highly doubt they'd include either the tankoubon or kanzenban spine images.
Tanooki Kuribo wrote:I was really hoping for something like this: (snippity snip)
Yeah, I think everyone was. Heck, they don't even have to change anything for the DB volumes, since they've already got the title in English on the cover. For the DBZ ones, they'd just have to squish the font a bit more to include the "Z."

Ah, thus is the curse of being a DaizEX forum goer--you know a bit too much than the average fan.

I was wondering about the split between the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai/Raditz's Arrival as well. The last DB volume should be interesting to say the least. :P

Well, I don't know about the tankoubon covers. If this is like the Kenshin book, they'll be in the back in full color.

We'll probably get random artwork from the manga thrown onto the spines...unless they recreate the spine image from either the tankoubon or kanzenban release.

Brad Redfield wrote:I'd also like to note that there appears to be something in the background of Z volume one. It looks sort of like speed-lines.
The speed lines are there on the Dragon Ball volume as well. It's just harder to see because of the bright yellow background.

Oh, and make room for me on that bandwagon that would rather have the Kanzenban covers than these. I like the VizBig images (heck, that picture of Goku on Kinto-un in one of my favorite Toriyama drawings ever), but they just don't scream "ultimate release." The background doesn't help either. I like the red, but the yellow just looks crappy.

I was browsing on Amazon.com, to see how much VIZ BIG will cost me. So look what I found. Not sure if it's posted or not.

Here Dragonball Z volume 2 (it's not even on VIZ's homepage:P)

EDIT:

Also the Release Dates:

DragonBall Z Volume 2 : Sep 2, 2008
DragonBall Z Volume 3 : Nov 18,2008

Dragonball Volume 2 : Aug 5, 2008
Dragonball Volume 3 : Dec 16, 2008

I'm not sure if these Covers and Dates are confirmed.

Cool.

I can deal with ugly covers, so long as the contents are good.

What's up with the release dates? DB and DBZ Volume one come out on May 6, then DB Volume 2 comes out on Aug 5, then DBZ Volume 2 comes out on Sep 2, then DBZ Volume 3 comes out on Nov 18, then DB Volume 3 comes out on Dec 16. I figured each DB and DBZ volume would be released at the same time, but it looks like the first two come out on the same day.

Nobody knows yet, as they haven't been releashed. The first volumes aren't coming out until the end of May, so we've still got a month and a half to go.
However, based on the statements Viz has made about the number of color pages in each volume, it seems certain that they will be keeping some of the color pages in gray-scale, the same as they are in Viz's current DB graphic novels.

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

So it's the original art.... mostly.

I don't think I'll be getting this. I'd rather pay a bit more and get better looking books with 100% original art, including the sound effects. Or a lot more > > But I don't see the point, for myself at least, in taking a middle step for a middle quality product. (by the way, none of this has to do with the covers. Are they ugly? Yeah. not the point.)

The artwork for the cover of DBZ volume two is on the back of volume four of the regular graphic novels.

And the artwork for Dragonball volume 1 is on the back of EVERY SINGLE VOLUME of the norwegian manga... Not like that has anything to do with anything, but I just felt like mentioning it anyway.

As long as there is material they haven't used yet(The Kazenban{?},Movie Comics, Anime Manga), there will be chance of a better release.
