AVI is a container format, as already mentioned. Just as VOB's are the container format used on DVD-Video discs. They have nothing to do with quality, the actual compression does (MPEG-2 is used for DVD).
Now, what you are more than likely talking about is MPEG-1, which is typically used for low bitrate/low resolution clips. Yes, of course this would not look as good as a competantly encoded DivX (MPEG-4) file.
