Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Oh, and remember way back when I mentioned Birus only puts forth 70% of his power in the final fight, and implied I was kidding? Well, I was kidding about kidding, because that's totally in the movie.
If he's only using 70% of his power, how the heck does he run out of it in the end?
I cannot standddd itttt... I can't bring myself to read the Synopsis and yet I want to. I keep seeing people say good things about it! I want to see the movie asap! Since I can't, I hope that there will be a way we can hear opinions in the podcast that do not reveal the whole story. I'd like to hear impressions before spoilers or anything. I just don't want to ruin the surprise but I'd still like to hear what everyone thought of it!
... I've picked up a few bits and pieces here and there on accident, but I'm still largely spoiler free

Did Goku go 100%, I bet he did, but in the summary he says at 1 point he is using only 80% of his power.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
Spoiler:
Doctor. wrote:I've explained before, I'll just paraphrase myself.
Power levels establish tension and drama. People who care about them (well, people who care about them in a narrative) don't care about the big numbers or the fancy explosions. If you have character A who's so much above character B, who's the main character, you're gonna be left wondering how in the hell character B, the character we're supposed to care and root for, is going to escape the situation or overcome the odds. It makes us emotionally invested.
If character B doesn't escape the situation in a believable way that's consistent with previous events, then that emotional investment is gone. It was pointless tension, pointless drama made just to suck in the viewer. It has no critical value whatsoever. The audience is left believing that the author can just create whatever scenarios he wants and what happens to the characters is decided by whatever the author wants to happen, regardless of the events that happened in the story. Which, in fairness, is what happens, but the audience wants to be fooled. The audience wants to know that the world they're following has rules. That the world they're invested in isn't going to bend to external factors that are irrelevant to them.
An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.
I threw this into my last post too, but just to repeat, for those not wanting to wade through the super-long summary, the main BoG movie page has a "summary" section offering a comprehensive but not insanely detailed run-down of the film. Still filled with spoilers though.

Hmmm that was my only problem with the sypnosis, is that it seems like Goku never fully gets into the fight, hmmm maybe he's tired, and wants to stay retired and that's why we see that look on his face in the new special about to come out..., and that' why I think we need to find a new hero, Vegeta your up!!!!!
Chuquita wrote:I guess that means Birus changed his mind about destroying the Earth after all and wanted to save face instead of telling them the truth?
I thought the same way because Uis seems to be a little surprised when Birus shoots a mall rock.
Your synposis was stolen, (no shocker). I said they should credit you since it matches word for word and it got deleted a mintue or so after I posted it.

After the 80% line, Birus starts fighting more seriously and Goku has to go all-out to keep up. It's said in the summary.
I guess we didn't end up phrasing the 80% bit as well as we could have, though. It's not really Goku bragging about only using 80% of his power; rather, the joke is that he considers 80% to be a whole lot, whereas Birus considers it too little and is annoyed Goku has been holding out on him. It's a little hard to sum up.
There's no way to really defeat that sort of thing, all you can really do is try to link/promote Kanzenshuu as a source when this stuff happens.
Either that or extreme-watermarking.
DB fandom's a really big place. I mean, I've searched "battle of gods" on twitter pretty often recently; a lot of people still don't even know what ssjg looks like.
This is going to be my strangest question of the day (maybe); Bulma's slapping Goku across the face at the end, right? Like a "how dare you!" type kinda slap? If he's crawling away is she bending down to slap him?

Going asleep now, I just know I'm going to have to read through a ton of pages when I wake up.
I would love a new series of Dragon Ball to follow this movie. If this movie is actually part of the main series and not just another movie then the 08 special actually happened.
If they do make a new series that takes place after this movie then Dragon Ball GT will basically be dead and no longer a part of the Dragon Ball story. I hope this happens to be honest. Sadly though i don't think they will make a new series, i think they will just continue making films
If they did make a new series it would surely be called Dragon Ball Universe, it makes perfect sense.
