They just think they're cool because they know some Japanese.
And I believe you're thinking of a /facepalm.

Actually I'm fairly certain gomu gomu translates out to rubber rubber.

Yes, but the adaptation of 'Gum Gum' is not only in line with the series' silliness, but also easier to say.

I actually didn't know that, NeptuneKai. Thanks!
But "Gum Gum" would work as well. (I always compared to chewing gum...which can also be really rubbery/stretchy.)

Not necessarily. The "gomu gomu" used in the One Piece manga is written in katakana, and katakana "gomu" is also the way to write the english word "gum" in japanese, so it can be taken as either an engrish "Gum Gum" or "Rubber Rubber" in japanese. Actually, that double meaning was probably intentional in the first place.

Because it's a "holy word that must never be translated". Or some crap like that. Another thing that annoys me about OP fansubs is that they all translate "kaigun" as "Marines", when "kaigun" is the japanese word for the navy, not the marines. (This happens because the soldiers have "MARINE" written in their shirts, and because 4Kids' dub used Navy, which means it's therefore automatically wrong)

Law of averages at work I suppose. 4kids is a terrible company, but they're bound to translate SOMETHING correctly.

Actually, I agree. I loved their TMNT series. But I absolutely HATE what they did with Shredder. That was the lamest plot twist ever.

It's...I can sort of see
why they feel that need, because of the way nakama is used by different people in the show. They want to keep the weight behind it, the way Luffy may use the word one way and someone else may use it another way (since it can be interpreted so many ways). But you could just translate it to friend, crewmate, whatever, and get the same message across really. It's just so silly.
We were discussing attack names in the IRC too. In Dragon Ball we don't really mind if an attack name isn't translated, like Makankosappo, right? But in One Piece, all of the attack names are just descriptions. Writing the subs in Japanese is retarded in that case. Especially when you have to put a note at the top anyway JUST TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Well until they made Turtles Forever (related, but different).
I'm still geeking out at the 1980s TMNT, 4Kids TMNT, and Mirage original TMNT all teaming up. xD

Whether you think it's right or wrong it's your opinion, as said earlier. You really can't blame anyone for downloading because they actually CAN do it and don't suffer anything for it.
Is it illegal? Yeah, pretty much. But should we focus on criticising the ones who download, the ones who fansub (in the case of anime), the ones who distribute or should we think WHY they can get away with it?
Personally, I don't care. I think that, if companies are suffering due to piracy, they should create more efficient ways to prevent it and if it is illegal, legal measures should be inforced upon those who do it.
If you really want to blame someone/something, you might as well blame the creators of the internet and high speed conections.

Wow, I knew an animator’s job was tough, but this gives me a newfound respect for them. I wonder what drives in-betweeners to stay in the business. Is it the prospect of eventually becoming a key animator or is it simply a dedication to the craft?

Part of it's love for the industry- you love animation, but when you start out you get the shittiest jobs to do (inbetweening and cleanup) and you need to work your way up from there. Some people might actually -like- inbetweening because there's much of the physical drawing embodied there and you're the person who does the last pass to connect the keys. But yeah, wanting to move up to something with more creative control would be a big motivator.

This is quite relevant as well, especially with licensing companies.
