Ah, thanks again, Piccolo Daimaoh! So it's "Staff Officer" Black then... interesting. Could anyone give the titles of the other Red Ribbon members, such as Commander Red, Sgt Major Murasaki, Colonel Silver, General Blue, etc? I'm curious about the authenticity/accuracy of those titles.

Sanboo isn't a common word in Japanese, but according to some online Japanese translators it means "staff officer".
An Adjutant is a staff officer who assists the commanding officer. That seems to be what Black's job is within the RRA. But I wouldn't know about the actual translation of his position.

Japanese English Translation
Murasaki Shouchou Master Sergeant Purple
Reddo Sousui Commander Red
Baioretto Taisa Colonel Violet
Buruu Shogun Blue Shogun

So, FUNi's names are pretty close.

Isn't it Murasaki Shouchou? Master Sergeant Murasaki? Metallic is Gunsou.

No prob. But since we're on the subject, I do have a question for whoever can answer it. On the DBoxes, I was a bit surprised to see that Simmons was translating Ginyu Taichou as Commander Ginyu when I'm used to captain. Having not seen a lot of the RR stuff in the anime, I wasn't sure if that meant that Red was also referred to as Red Taichou, as he's also referred to as "Commander." But now I see he's given a different term. So what's the difference? Does anyone know why Simmons preferred to go with Commander for Ginyu?

He's called burakku hosa (Assistant/Aide/Adjutant Black) in the manga. They changed his name to burakku sanbou in the anime, I guess to parody Little Black Sambo (chibikuro sanbo in Japanese).

I don't have the DBoxes and it's been a while since I've seen those episodes in Japanese, but "Taichou" means "commander" or "commanding officer". "Teichou" however, means "captain" in a rank or military sense, not the captain of a football team or whatever.

Oh, they used Adjutant in the Manga. I guess we should call him "Adjutant Black" then.

And yeah, "Sanbou" is probably a play on Little Black Sambo as I said before.

That one doesn't really make sense. Where does the "lur" come from?

Oh, and on "Gurt": there's a definite "d" sound in the name, representing a difference between the character name and its source, so calling him "Gurt" to match the pun would be kinda like ignoring the extra "ka" in "Kakarot". OK, so that's the best example, but in general they're both instances of making the character name match its source much more than it originally did.

Yes, Jake. I decided to mix/merge the names for my convenience:

Guldo + Gururdo = Gulurdo.

The better latter, I evenly used this name to match close to the Japanese/FUNimation names as well as the name pun sufficiently.

Gururdo? It's Gurudo. And Guldo's just one of the possible English approximations of Gurudo. Why mix the two?

That’s…really quite nonsensical. Like splitting the difference between “Vegetto” and “Vegito” by using “Vegietotto”.

But so anyway, Olivier Hague was nice enough to send me the list he had compiled of all the alphabet spellings for character names used in the manga or by various Japanese merchandise like guidebooks or Carddass cards. I was wanting to reorganize it a little before posting, but kept not getting around to it, so I figure I’ll juts post it as-is before I forget about it entirely. Manga characters are ordered by first appearance (the numbers indicate the chapter they debut in). After that are random terms, then anime-only stuff. For characters with multiple different spellings, the more popular spellings (in Hague’s judgment) are listed first.

So I’ve been wanting to make more updates to the name pun guide, but I’m currently stymied by two things. First, I want to have all the info I update with included into in my posts at the beginning of the thread for easy reference, but both posts are just about at the size limit. But more importantly, I really don’t have the time for this kinda thing right now, and probably won’t for about a month or so.

OK, I started to use my own naming conventions close to the Japanese Names like Kywi, Jhiszu, Bautta, Reakoomu, Gulurdo, and Naizu. I somewhat use 'em for Freeza and co.'s World Trade Organization.

EDIT: I can keep em or accurately change em for the names of the members of Ginyu-Corps.
