Yeah, I enjoyed them a lot. It's surprising to think that the Vegeta and Piccolo ones were written by the guy who wrote the 13 films, and the Trunks one was written by the woman who helped write GT.ekrolo2 wrote:Doctor. wrote:The small side-stories about Trunks, Piccolo and Vegeta the anime staff wrote.
That was some really good stuff! They should allow for more of these to get made nowadays.

TBF, Koyama also wrote the Bardock special and GT had lots of good ideas & concepts even if its execution was mediocre most of the time. It seems to me Dragon Ball works the best when its got one person driving the car instead of a lot of people who can potentially shit the bed.Doctor. wrote:Yeah, I enjoyed them a lot. When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

There's nothing out of place really with the first Cooler movie. Those who argue "why didn't Goku go SS immediately?" seem to have missed an important detail:
Goku in base form curbstomped Cooler until Cooler transformed.
He didn't NEED to go Super Saiyan until Cooler changed forms.
As for why he thought Goku killed Frieza, anyone who knew Frieza lived through it, was rescued by King Cold, and came to Earth died when Trunks wiped out Cold's men, Cold, Frieza, and destroyed the ship.

Re: Your personal canon (AGAIN!)
As you can see in my signature, my personal canon tries to be as close as to what I think the canon of the series actually is objectively, I don't try and let my feelings on something stop it from being canon or try and make it canon (like I wish the canon was just The Manga (Tankobon Edition) + Bardock Special + Dragon Ball Online but sadly it can never be...)
If I had to pick one of my multiple canons to become the one true canon then it would have to be this:
If I had to pick one of my multiple canons to become the one true canon then it would have to be this:
- Dragon Ball (The Manga) (Kanzenban Edition) [Why Kanzenban? Because Toriyama felt it was necessary to alter the ending, even though it was only a slight alteration I think we need to acknowledge the work of the author, a similar thing happened to The Hobbit and it was way more drastic (an entire chapter was reworked!) and that was accepted as the new canon]
- Any other manga written by Toriyama that may or may not take place in the same world as Dragon Ball (Such as Dr Slump, Jiya and Neko Majin) [This is because there was that crossover with Dr Slump in one chapter of the manga itself, there were character cameos in Neko Majin but the status of canon is very sketchy (because you might also say that the KochiKame/DB crossover was canon as well) and as for Jiya it features the Galactic Patrol which are undoubtedly canon due to the Jaco Galactic Patrolman manga), not just this but Toriyama's works all seem to take place in the same bizarre world of imagination, especially his pre-Dragon Ball works]
- Any anime filler from DB & DBZ that had involvement from Toriyama that doesn't contradict anything else on this list [I'm mainly talking about things like Lunch going off chasing after Tenshinhan and Yamcha being a baseball player, which probably came about because Toriyama simply suggested them, which is similar to how things happen in the next item on the list]
- Any (non-contradictory) in-universe tidbits that Toriyama comes out with during interviews [People might scoff at this one because it flies in the face of 'Death of the Author' (look it up) but Toriyama has sometimes taken it upon himself to answer some questions that people have about some of the less explained parts of the series, on the plus side of this we've gotten information like Android 17 & 18's real names, the in-universe history behind the designs of Androids 16 & 19 and 17's life after the series with his family, on the minus side we've gotten pointless retcons like Majin Boo not having been created by Bibbidi and him having actually existed since the beginning of time, an instance of Toriyama directly contradicting his own work! It's quite hard to tell if he just comes up with these answers on the spot because his story for each android sounded planned out, especially their names. However in a question of "what's more canon? Something Toriyama said in an interview or the story Toriyama wrote onto the pages of the manga?" it's definitely the latter. In short, Toriyama can add to the canon in interviews however he cannot contradict it, but he can contradict the guidebooks. It's similar to what J.K. Rowling has been doing with some pretty big revelations being revealed years after the Harry Potter book series ended.]
- Information from the Daizenshuu and other official guidebooks [Only the parts that don't contradict with ANY of the facts that show up in ANY of the other entries on this list, non-contradictory information from the guidebooks can still be considered canon because it's usually based on established facts and it can definitely be assumed that Toriyama approves of them since he had interviews in them and drew the covers]
- Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!! [Toriyama came up with the story, it's not exactly like he full on wrote the script or anything but it definitely has enough of his involvement to make it canon, not to mention that Tarble was brought up in Battle of Gods]
- Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods [Yes Toriyama didn't come up with the idea of Super Saiyan God, yes the screenplay was originally written by Watanabe but there's more Toriyama contribution here than there was in the 2008 JSAT special and this film definitely feels like Toriyama was involved, it's canon!]
- Jaco the Galactic Patrolman (Including Dragon Ball Minus) [This is just as canon as the original manga. Same level of involvement from Toriyama, it wasn't even co-written. As for Dragon Ball Minus, yes, Bardock and Gine lied to Raditz and said Kakarrot was sent to Earth to destroy it, they sent him in the same pods that infiltration babies used so he was all set to go and destroy the earth should he have felt like it, and when he got to Earth he was a wild child which is actually more fitting than how the anime portrayed Son Gohan picking him up as a cute little ruthless space warrior. Nonetheless it has to be addressed that although it feels like Bardock is portrayed as caring he is still the same Bardock that showed up in the Dragon Ball manga as he was shown to have confronted Freeza like he did in the TV special, which means that you can either fill in the gaps with your mind or you can assume that most of the Bardock TV special is still canon, mainly the bit where Bardock confronts Freeza and also the bit before that when his comrades are all killed and he finds their bodies (because he still wears the blooded headband in the DB manga panel)]
- Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F [This has even more Toriyama work on it than Battle of Gods...shame it didn't turn out anywhere near as good as BoG, nevertheless, it's canon!]
- Dragon Ball Super (Anime.) (Episode 28 onwards) (Excluding filler.) [Yes, the anime. I believe to be the canon because it's abundantly clear that DBS was thought up as an anime and the manga is just the supplementary material although Toyotaro is working very hard to make it feel like more of a canon sequel since it shares the same format as the original manga. If Dragon Ball Super started as lets say a weekly manga being serialised in Weekly Shonen Jump before Battle of Gods came out and then instead of making the movies Toei made DBS to adapt the manga then yeah I would call the manga canon but in reality the most I can say for the manga is that it's a good way of measuring what is filler and what isn't filler in the anime, and no I'm not talking about the slight changes between the two versions, Goku was a SSJ Blue Kaio-ken x10 against Hit and they were fighting in a futuristic looking tournament ring not an ancient Egyptian one, that's how it went in the canon version of the story] [Yes I understand how dumb it is to say that the anime is canon but also say "only the parts that were in the manga"]

Re: Your personal canon (AGAIN!)
I just put movies 2, 3, and 5 in during the wait for the androids. Dunno how movie 4 could fit, though, with Pseudo Super Saiyan. What complicates that further is that 4 literally has a flashback of Piccolo sacrificing himself! So it has to be after the Saiyan Saga, but if it's during the wait for the androids, Goku should be a normal Super Saiyan. So that's a weird one.Lord Beerus wrote:I'd just recton Turles, Slug and Cooler into being characters that died prior to the original story.Sailor Haumea wrote:This.simtek34 wrote: PTETSS can't fit in without adding Cooler,Slug, and Tree of Might to the list

Movie 1 can fit a year before DBZ if you ignore Krillin recognizing Gohan.

Re: Your personal canon (AGAIN!)
I updated my post with an image. I hope that it makes things clearer. I don't have a canon as much as I have a watching order of the franchise, because if I were told to watch the X-Men movies in chronological order, I would have to split my viewing in Days of Future Past. Since the authors of the manga and the anime studios go back and forth with their ideas, it's better to follow them by the official release to keep track of their creative process.
