Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.8)
Yeah, what mistranslations are out there? That's the main thing.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.8)
I was skimming through a speedsub on youtube and it was pretty bad....like Chichi's "doesn't he look younger?" replaced by "did his power really increase?", which i don't know how one even vaguely familiar with japanese and/or the franchise and characters could get wrong. When they can't translate a line it seems they tend to make up something about battle powers. But maybe the most relevant lines were more or less accurate.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:Other than Herms being busy it might because the speed subs weren't that bad this week, probably since there wasn't a lot of talking, so there really isn't a rush to fact check.ssj_duelist wrote:Is the OP not being updated anymore? Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.8)
I'm sure you planned on pointing it out anyway, but you should address the whole "Gomen" thing.
There's a lot of confusion over that, and many people think it was intended as "sorry".

That's a good one to include.Araki wrote:Chichi's "doesn't he look younger?" replaced by "did his power really increase?"

Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.8)
Huh thats weird the subs I watched on Sunday had ChiChi ask if Goku looks younger and the rest of the episode lined pretty well with Herms episode summary. I guess it must have been a different speed sub group then the infamous one going around.Araki wrote:I was skimming through a speedsub on youtube and it was pretty bad....like Chichi's "doesn't he look younger?" replaced by "did his power really increase?", which i don't know how one even vaguely familiar with japanese and/or the franchise and characters could get wrong. Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.8)
I have a question. I've heard several translations of various lines referring to Beerus as "the strongest God of Destruction in the universe". Does that imply there are others in the 7th universe or is it just a bad translation?
Cool stuff that I upload here because Youtube will copyright claim it: https://vimeo.com/user60967147

Re: Fact Checker (update: Eps.9+10)
Updated with episode 9 stuff (at last) and also some episode 10 stuff. I'm going to try a different approach and just start updating right as each episode airs with whatever major bits of exposition or anything I think is interesting and/or potentially controversially and/or prone to getting mistranslated. That way I'll get some facts out there right from the start, rather than just sitting around waiting for misinformation to crop up. I'll still update later if need be, to add in whatever major mistranslations or controversies crop up.
There are several lines like that in Japanese, and while they're generally a bit more ambiguous in Japanese, they still make it sound like there are other Gods of Destruction in the universe. So it's not simply the fault of bad translations.Polyphase Avatron wrote:I have a question. Re: Fact Checker (update: Eps.9+10)
Its a pun on the spanish word.Herms wrote: Minute: 16
Context: Videl has revealed she’s pregnant with Gohan’s child
Chi Chi: "Have you decided on a name yet?"
Gohan: "No, not yet."
Chi Chi: "Then leave it to me. Coming from Goku and Gohan, how ‘bout 'Gomen'?”
Significance: As revealed in the Japanese CC for the episode, the intended kanji spelling for Chi Chi’s suggested name is 悟麺. The 悟/Go means “to understand” and is the same as in Goku and Gohan, while 麺/men means “noodles” and is a takeoff of how the han in “Gohan” (飯) means “rice”. So it’s substituting one staple food for another, to keep with the family name scheme. As any Japanese 101 student knows, gomen is also one of the Japanese words for “sorry” (short for gomenasai). I guess that’s…maybe part of the joke here, but it’s not the whole story. Now, obviously Videl’s child is Pan, as featured at the tail end of the manga and more prominently in GT, not to mention RoF more recently. “Pan” is a pun on the Portuguese word for “bread”.
Spanish = pan.
Portuguese = pão.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Eps.9+10)
Ok, Etymology time: "パン" or "Pan" is the Japanese word for bread, but it comes from the Portuguese word "pão" since the Japanese first encountered bread from Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. "Pan" is just the closest translation of "pão" given the limited phonemes in Japanese. The Spanish never had much contact the Japan and thus their word for bread is not really what the word パン is based on, even if spelled/pronounced the same, and I doubt they went that far afield for Pan's name pun.FortuneSSJ wrote:Its a pun on the spanish word.Herms wrote: Minute: 16

Re: Fact Checker (update: Eps.9+10)
Ah, that must be why I had it in my head that it was from Portuguese. Looking around, Jim Breen's Japanese dictionary and Japanese Wikipedia back up that Japanese pan comes from Portuguese pão...and it was originally written in kanji as 麵包, with the same 麵 used to write the "men" in "Gomen". So I guess that's the proper explanation for the name: it's more or less an attempt to write Pan's name with kanji, formatted like Goku and Gohan's name, rather than in katakana.
I'll go incorporate that into the original post...later.
Edit: Aa~~aand incorporated.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Eps.9+10)
For what it's worth, the Japanese closed captions have:Herms wrote:Japanese Wikipedia spells it as ウォートリン, and since ウォー is used in kana spellings to approximate the English "wa" sound, going by this spelling the planet's name would be romanized as "Watorin" or "Watrin". However, some people (such as Julian) heard it as more like オートリン, romanized as "Ōtorin" or "Ōtrin", and the former is what Kanzenshuu has gone with so far. We'll probably just have to wait for a spelling from an official source, and until then it's probably best to hold off speculating about name puns.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.11)
Updated with the first draft of ep.11 stuff. This update really did feel like a flat-out Strength Checker entry.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.11)
The early fan subs didn't mess anything too major up although they did constantly translate Beerus little rant as him being sleepy instead of tired although I guess both can work.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.11)
It depends. Couldn't his "I'm tired" rant be interpreted as "I'm tired of fighting opponents that are so weak!" instead of him being tired physically? It's likely that it's the latter, but the former also fits when you take into account the dialogue in this episode.
Re: Fact Checker (update: Ep.11)
It also works because Beerus sleeps a lot, possibly more than he actually needs to, to keep himself from going completely off his rocker from sheer boredom. Regardless, its a pretty interesting point that was completely absent from the movie and I'm liking Supers touching upon it.
