Dragonball Movie Update! What is UP with this?

Uh, wow. Just read this summary of that novel...

Collect all seven Dragon Balls and you can wish for whatever you want!
Goku thought he was a normal high school student until he found out he's actually a martial-arts whiz with all kinds of crazy powers. Now he and his new group of teen warriors are on a quest to find all the Dragon Balls before they fall into the wrong hands. But they may already have! Goku must battle the evil madman Piccolo with all he's got to save the planet Earth!

Nothing... new. But it still gives me this terrible feeling. =x

I know that the book will contain the information somewhere, I just think that since the book itself is based off of Toriyama's personal, hard work he should receive enough credit to have his name included on the cover.

That's exactly right, the target audience for this book is 8 to 10 year olds or something like that who don't have extensive knowledge of the franchise like we do.

But, at the same time, lets not completely ignore it. Goku thought he was a normal high school student until he discovered that he's a martial arts whiz.

I don't see how people can forgive that. "Hey, Ken, remember that its an adaption. They can completely change the origin of Goku if they want. Because that's what adapting is. Its completely changing the story and ignoring the source material."

I still wanna see a trailer, though. Still looks to be visually impressive despite whatever I don't like about the story.

Not that it changes anything but you guys make it seem like it's totally and utterly changing every single thing about the story. He still meets Bulma and goes looking for the 7 Dragon Balls which if I'm not mistaken happened in the source material. If changing at least ONE thing is going against the source material then I guess The Lord of the Rings movies were as equally crippled as this movie.

How exactly do you even suddenly discover that you're a martial arts whiz? That's like discovering all of a sudden that you're a master painter (I know, I shouldn't analyze it too much, but I find that sentence amusing).

Well, think about what it would have been like if The Lord of the Rings movies made Frodo an unpopular high school student...That's a hell of a change there, even if it's technically only one thing.

So what you're saying is that it would be okay if Batman became Batman because of a chemical accident that mutates a utility belt from his waist and his parents were still alive and well because otherwise he's still fighting crime. The Ninja Turtles would be okay as a Tokusatsu because they still fight the Shredder. Superman would be okay without a costume or the ability to fly because he still fights a Thanagarian Snare Beast.

Sorry. I don't buy it. They might as well have had Goku Parker get bit by a radioactive space monkey that farts yellow clouds that can be used as transportation while they were out to make him a seemingly-normal High School student. At least then it would've been more like a funny spoof.

Lord of the Rings fans wouldn't stand for such a ridiculous change. Heh maybe we aren't doing our jobs as fans then huh ?

Honestly I don't think the whole High School thing is meant to be a huge part of "Movie Goku's" character. If there is a sequel I'm sure High School stuff won't be mentioned again. I wish they would have just kept him in the forest but they didn't. I mean they have the blue gi, they know the importance of the 4 star Dragon Ball, He has the staff, Roshi is perverted, and Piccolo makes demons. What I WANT to know is how the hell out of all of that did they come up with High School ? Seriously ? HIGH SCHOOL!? I mean somebody obviously read the manga or watched the show? Why make him a High School student ? Oh who the fuck am I kidding!? These guys probably just Wikipedia'd this shit and called a day. Augh! This forum is making me real sour towards this film....

Further thoughts on what it would be like if the Lord of the Ring movies were adapted like this live-action movie is apparently going to be:

Frodo thought he was a normal high school student until he found out he's actually a hobbit with all kinds of shortness and big feet related powers. Now he and his new group called the Fellowship of the Ring are on a quest to destroy the one ring of power before it falls into the wrong hands. But it may already have! Frodo must battle the evil madman Sauron with all he's got to save the Middle Earth!

I guess it could work.
