Oh, well, the more you know. I'm still a relatively recent fan as far as fansites go (I think DBZ was almost over in the US by the time I got an internet connection) so I wouldn't know how these things developed. From my perspective "Jheese" seemed pretty widespread around here, though.

I thought about it for a bit.

Thoughts on Jerry Jewel as Freeza?

Gaara as Vegeta and Grimlock as Ginyu huh? Don't know about Jim Cummings as narrator as while he's a great actor, him narrating has me only think of his Sterling Holloway-esque narration, and can't think of that fitting DB.

Tim Curry would make a kickass Freeza. That and the fact that I love his voice.

Always figured that. Heck, Frieza with an evil British accent would've been excellent casting.

That's not too wonky, considering that the English word "new" is written ニュー/nyuu in Japanese, just like the end of Ginyu's name.

Well, even "Son Gok.ou" sorta works if you pronounce "kou" to rhyme with the English word "you", which may be what they were going for. Still a rather odd romanization though. I don't think it originated in video games though, but has been used on all sorts of DB merchandise since pretty much forever. Likewise, “Ginew” has been used in guide books, and is what he’s known as in Italian and Catalan.

"Jheece" and its variants are INCREDIBLY recent developments for the name adaptation in terms of general usage in the English-speaking fandom, and Viz actually deserves a little credit for pushing it along.

Back when, ya' know, they did decent stuff.

I waver on whether or not "Jiisu" is a "problem"... if you even want to call it that. It's not like it is the English word "cheese" like your examples of Trunks and Cell (and Vegeta directly being a part of a word) -- that would be チース / chiisu instead of ジース / jiisu.
Actually, isn't cheese chiizu? That's why Jheece makes a little more sense than Jheese.

That's right, it's チーズ/chiizu vs ジース/Jiisu.

It's not that odd. Now "Luffy" is an odd romanization. So is "Bulma". But "Gokou" is actually spelt like it's pronounced in Japanese.

Which reminds me... My mom spelt it that way before. She had never seen it written, so when she was writting his name (I'm not sure why she was writing it), she wrote it like an English word; you, caribou, et cetera.

I was trying to think of a light-hearted deep voice, but I can't really think of anyone off the top of my head. So, I just went with Jim Cummings, though I know there are better choices. I sort of did pick Liam because of his Rouga...cause the character was somewhat similar to Vegeta's personality. Somewhat. So, I'd thought that'd work.
Tim Curry would make a kickass Freeza. That and the fact that I love his voice.
He'd be pretty expensive though.

Keeps
Almost everyone

Drops
All of Chris Sabat's minor roles - Should be obvious. The man has too many. Piccolo and Vegeta are fine.

Frieza - Should be played by a man.

Replaces
J. Michael Tatum as Jeice - I think he was in the remastered, and he did a good job from what I heard.

Troy Baker as Cell - He did a good job in Raging Blast.

That's all I can think of for now.
