I'm confused. I don't know how "stength" matters. As long as the opposition of of relatively similar strength or other combat advantage, how does it really matter?
I think it's because the Z fighters are so strong they just go off the charts. Other than Roshi blowing up
the fucking Moon, there's a fairly consistent rise in the collateral damage up to Raditz or so.
But after Vegeta threatens to blow up the Earth with his Galic Gun, there's no frame of reference anymore and the fights start suffering for it. For example, Freeza fails to blow up Namek despite being nearly 3,400 times Saiyan Saga Vegeta's strength (if you go with the Daizenshuu numbers)?
Cell claims he can blow up the solar system with his Kamehameha, but Gohan equals it with his Kamehameha. There's supposedly enough energy there to destroy two whole solar systems, and it barely ruffles the cameraman's hair?
Majin Vegeta, a Super Saiyan 2 superior to Cell, self-destructs, releasing ALL of his ki and it only makes a crater?
Does anything even happen in the Super Vegetto versus Gohan-Buu fight (aka the fight between the two strongest warriors in the whole series) that didn't happen way back in Goku versus King Piccolo?
One Piece, by comparison, is still way down in Dragonball levels where what we're being told about the characters' strength still matches up with the kind of damage they're doing. The breakdown of "show, don't tell" is probably Dragonball's biggest failing.
