Ryan Reynolds, actually.

This might be old, but saw this image on wiki and thought I'd share it:

Ya, it has been around for a few months now. It is supposed to be Muten Roshi, but the power pole like staff in his hand and his lack of sunglasses made it hard to tell at first.

This movie is going to end up just like "DOA: Dead or Alive"/"Mortal Kombat"/"Street Fighter"/"Super Mario Bros." a fucking joke. People make excuses, but I can guarantee this is where this movie will end up. Hell, look at all the problems people are having with just the images that have come out for it. You could put all the most talented actors and actresses in the world in this movie, and it wouldn't save it from being garbage. I'm sorry if I hurt any feelings with this post. I'm just calling it as I see it.

Maybe, Master Roshi is bald and he wears a wig to impress the ladies?

That's exactly what I'm afraid of, too. Do you think it'll be as much of a joke as the Chinese Dragonball movie, though?

Nah, it'll be a fun, well-produced, action-packed adaptation, that focuses on being a fun, well-produced, action-packed movie and generally pleasing to a wide array of audiences, instead of appeasing an extremely small demographic of whiny, picky fanboys.

I had a really strange dream last night. I bought the live action movie on DVD, way before it hits theaters. It was a bootleg version from China. It came in the mail and it was just a regular DVD case with a Flaming Dragonball on the cover with lightning and other crap, and Japanese writing.

So, I can't really remember all that much from it, but here are the highlights.

First of all, it was animated, for whatever reason, but it wasn't really in Toriyama style, kinda like a nock off.

Second, Goku doesn't get his Kame gi until right before fighting piccolo. The gi looked like the movie version, but had a yellow stripe on the pants.

Third, Piccolo is first shown at what I thought was the end of the movie, but Roshi hadn't even appeared yet, how Goku had the Kame Gi, I have no Idea.

Fourth, Piccolo appears in a black cloak with his face mostly covered by a hood, He calls Goku and alien and some other stuff, then removes the cloak to reveal that he is just a buffed up white guy with a full head of hair and pointy ears with a black stripe over his eyes.

Fifth, Goku uses a noodle thin Kamehameha which is ineffective, then he transforms into Oozaru, and defeats piccolo.
now I thought this was the end, but nope.

Sixth, when Goku reverts back to normal, he is a kid, in his standard Blue gi from the beginning of Dragonball. From here he goes on a random journey.

Seventh, on this journey he meets Oolong for whatever reason. Then they come to a town where Master Roshi has apparently been holding a tournament where anyone can fight him. But in the meantime he is just raping and killing people.

Eighth, when Goku arrives to fight Roshi, Roshi looks kind like Tao Pie Pie, but with yellow pants and two big scars on his chest.

Ninth, they fight for a short while, and then Goku, who can apparently transform at will, morphs into Oozaru, defeats Roshi, and the movie ends with Goku and Oolong sailing away in a boat.

Tenth, for some reason, the English Dialog in the movie was dubbed over Japanese, but you could still here the Japanese.

Ok, so hopefully the movie isn't like that, but hey that might be alright if it was, lol.

Oh, and since no one will ever see it in the Fan Works Explosion topic.

I pretty much gave up on this, it's still pretty decent though.

I'm sure that making Goku smile more, giving Roshi facial hair, making Bulma's hair blue, and cutting out the High School part of the plot wouldn't drive away the wide array of audiences and would probably please a few more picky fanboys.

Judging by how "off" this is movie is going to be, it will probably be more like Journey to the West than Dragonball. :?

These reported "secret cell phone pictures" have been around for a while.

But since Fox takes great care to make sure all of their workers agree with contracts not to advertise the movie, I find it unlikely that this "cell phone pic", and probably the others too, are real, since it obviously shows actors posing for the camera in full costume, something that they probably signed a contract against doing.

Well, Star Trek and other films normally do on-set cast photos like these for later promotional use so it could be possible somebody on set took a picture too on their phone and leaked it.

Just like Street Fighter and Super Mario Brothers. This thing going to bomb so bad, Howard the Duck will look like Titantic.

Nah, it'll be forgettable when the eventual Saiyan arc film comes around. I think that's when it'll spark an interest towards the general audience.

Both movies, actually, were examples of the "so bad, it's good" genre, for a lot of people. But since optimism and enjoyment don't seem to be your cup o' tea, then no, they failed for completely different and valid reasons. Let me tell you why.

Mario failed because, first off, it is something so extraordinarily out there that it shouldn't have even tried to be made into a movie. In addition, it tried to actually explain itself, doing things like giving Mario and Luigi mechanical jump-boost boots, and silliness like that. In other words, it tried taking something completely goofy and fantasy-based, and make it realistic. In the end, it had almost nothing to do with the games, except for the two chubby goofballs in colorful overalls.

Street Fighter failed because although the source material was very cool, the movie was just plain badly done. The cast was full of B-list actors, the "special effects" were horrific and ten years too soon to try the things that Street Fighter requires, and the story couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a comedy or action flick.

DragonBall suffers from none of these problems.

Compared to Mario, it is incredibly realistic. It's about super-powered martial artists, fighting against or alongside aliens/demons. The story does contain a good amount of fantasy elements, but fortunately the important ones (Shenlong) can easily be retained while the nonsensical, obscure, unneeded ones (talking animal-people) can be discarded inconsequentially.

When it comes to story, the King Piccolo saga is pretty easy to adapt.

"Piccolo, an ancient, powerful demon (later revealed to actually be not from this planet) is released from his confinement after so many years, and seeks the legendary DragonBalls, in order to use their power to ultimately rule the world. It's up to Son Goku, a quirky but extraordinarily strong teenage boy (eventually also revealed to be from another planet), to defeat him and save the world."

That's a lot easier to adapt than "Bowser, a giant, anthropomorphic turtle-like beast repeatedly kidnaps a princess for undetermined reasons, requiring her rescue by Mario and Mama Luigi, a pair of colorful overall-clad plumbers, who fight by jumping insane heights to stomp on the heads of Bowser's mushroom and turtle minions, eating mushrooms that either give them fire powers or double them in size, and riding around on a green, misproportioned dinosaur with a tongue that would put a Lickylicky to shame."

Compared to Street Fighter, DragonBall is much more feasible. First off, DragonBall has about three times SF's budget, and now have the moviemaking techniques and technology to use that cash to do anything they want in terms of fight scenes and make it believable. In 1994, all they had was crappy wirework and Power Rangers-like spark pyrotechnics.

In addition, the actors are solid and well-cast; most of them are relative unknowns (it's certainly not DTX's dreaded "CELEB BALL Z!!!!1!1ONE!!!"), but they're all either fans of the series, or are having a blast and putting their all into the acting, or both. Plus, several of them are well-experienced in playing roles similar to their DB characters. The story is a very faithful adaptation, combining elements from early DragonBall with the Piccolo Daimao and Jr sagas, but from how they're setting things up, the real treat in terms of story will be the Z sequels.

The movie is shaping up to be good. People are just complaining that things aren't exactly as they are in the show, which, when adapting something like this, shouldn't even be expected. Because it wouldn't make sense, would be repulsively corny, or would just take too long to explain or portray. The director, the cast, the crew, and just about everyone who's had glimpses at this movie so far have liked what they see, and have faith in it... except for the DragonBall fans. And for tiny, nitpicky, stupid reasons. That should say something.
This thing going to bomb so bad, Howard the Duck will look like Titanic.
Says you. Titanic wasn't that great, either. "Hey, we're going to die, but at least we got a good amount of hedonism and adultry in beforehand, eh?"
Sebastian (SB) wrote:Nah, it'll be forgettable when the eventual Saiyan arc film comes around. I think that's when it'll spark an interest towards the general audience.
This is kinda what I've been saying for a long time. This movie is being made as it is in order to set up for the more impactful "Z-era" movies. The material in those are what most people are familiar with and will care about. But they can't really just jump into those without first setting things up, so they're taking a few liberties with the earlier material in order to get to those sooner, yet still appropriately set up for them. This movie will still be good enough on it's own, but its true purpose is to be a "DragonBall Z Prequel."

Which, if you ask me, is preferable. I'd rather have the content of the first movie be altered and condensed a little bit in order to work well both on its own and as a prequel, rather than have the second movie altered and condensed a lot in order to jump into the "good stuff" sooner.
