You aren't wrong. I've had to explain this quite a few times. There's really no question as to what he means.Big Momma wrote:My Japanese isn't the best, and I'm not trying to go against Kei's awesome translation. But the quote from the interview is: マンガで連載していた時の続きのつもりで新ストーリーを考えました。 He uses "つもり", which I was taught can imply "intentions" and "plan to/are going to". And it comes off, to me at least, as a very concrete word. But I could be wrong, of course.

Not really trying to debate against you Suupaa Gohan 2, but even if he did officially continue the manga now, that wouldn't really be considered 'official' and 'canon' by everyone anyway - there'd still be people who would swear only by what was originally done in the 80's/90's. Even if Toriyama officially said it was, totally, 100% a new entry that was truly in the same canon (and again assuming Toriyama even really cares about such a thing), it'd still be something that could be debated.
So basically, yeah - I agree with you fully that it's open to someone's interpretation if they want to take the new movies as such. I do wish less people would be lurking ready to jump out and go 'MAN WHAT EVEN IS THIS SHIT, EVERYTHING NEW SUCK, BLARGH' every single time something new is mentioned though.

Why does it even matter? It's an official Dragon Ball product. It happens to use a previous Dragon Ball product as a basis for its story. This applies to everything since Chapter #1 of the 1984 comic was written. How is this confusing? Why is this an issue? Dragon Ball is going to run for decades more, new official products are going to come out. They're going to contradict or outright ignore other official productions. This isn't an issue. It wasn't an issue in the prior thirty years and it won't be an issue in the succeeding thirty years.

I agree and will love the movie as is, using previous information towards new content is a non-issue.JulieYBM wrote:Why does it even matter? It's an official Dragon Ball product. it was stated BoG takes place between chapter 517 and 518 and that RoF is the continuation of BoG.
akira toriyama said BoG takes place several years after buu.
he said for him dragonball is his manga.
he makes these new movies with the mind on the manga's story he does not care if its animated or drawn.
well , he is tired od drawing everything and doing everything alone.
its completly irrelevant whats canon right now.
even if GT is canon or whatever , these movies are the not shown parts of the last chapters of the manga.
i know its to late to do that to the manga but blame akira toriyama and on top of that he probably gonna retcon a few things from the EoZ.
no offence to any1 but this topic is stupid.

The topic itself is not stupid, but it doesn't belong in this thread (or at least not in this quantity). If anyone wants to continue discussing canonicity or Toriyama's modern involvement in the franchise, please make a new thread.

Bulma's blog updated super-early compared to recently!
It's the new voice actor for Shenlong this time.

Ootomo Ryuuzaburou voiced Shen Long before, he simply didn't do it for Kami to Kami because Utsumi Kenji was able to slip back in one last time.

So the 33 Days Left post was the second half of the Momoiro Clover Z interview, which apparently was just taken from their piece in Weekly Jump that Julian already translated, and the 34 Days Left post was...just some more promotional merchandise stuff that I couldn't work up the enthusiasm to tackle right now. So I've kinda just skipped straight ahead to today's update:
Hey, Bulma here!
Just 32 days to go until the movie debuts!
Today we’ve got a comment from no less a personage than Shenlong himself, Ryūzaburō Ōtomo-san!
When they decided to make this movie I got the honor of playing Shenlong; I had really wanted the role, so I was pretty happy.
Everyone got high expectations when they heard Toriyama-sensei was doing the script. I figured I had better do my best too. But then Shenlong hardly gets any screen time…I would have liked him to stick around just a little longer (laughs).
Shenlong used to be voiced by [Kenji] Utsumi-san, someone I really admired, so I tried to play the part a bit cool, in my own way (laughs).
As for Shenlong resurrecting Freeza, you could just say he was doing his duty, but even so…
Well, I guess even regular gods are like that (laughs).
I definitely want to see this film! If you come to the theater, I’ll grant you any wish I can.
Definitely come see it in theaters!
Kanzenshuu: Is that place still around?

Very classy of him to give props to Utsumi (who I'm glad got to have one last hurrah in the 2013 movie).

I definitely think there's a big bombshell they haven't dropped yet. But I don't think it has anything to do with Goten or Trunks. I get the feeling they are not in the film, not just because they haven't been shown... but because there seems to be a concentrated effort to only include those who were big players during the Freeza arc. Buu is also absent as is Mr. Satan. I think Toriyama did that on purpose to give this film a throwback feel to the height of DBZ's action popularity and he did it in response to criticisms regarding the lack of action/fighting/serious tone that some fans had about BOG. So where is everyone else? There will probably be a line of dialogue that explains it in one sentence. Goten and Trunks were training together somewhere or they now go to school or who knows what. It doesn't really matter, just some reason not to show them. I hope I'm wrong though.Chuquita wrote:I still don't fully understand why he was curious enough to try to find out if "two hours of sleep a night" would still be feasible 20+ years later. I get challenging yourself, but getting that amount of sleep is gonna mess with you no matter what your age is. (I've found anything less than 4 hours will leave your mind beat up the next day.)
Segueing into, this may just be my exhausted mind wandering in an effort to try and relax, but they sure revealed what Golden Freeza looks like awful early compared to super saiyajin god form. We didn't get to see ssjg in all its magenta sparklyness until the March 2013 VJump issue. Outside of those who got to the early preview screenings of the film.
I'm leaning back towards "there has to be some kind of plot bombshell they're not telling us about yet" is what I mean. If Golden Freeza was the only plot-based shocker, wouldn't they have saved it for April's VJump the way they saved ssjg Gokû's?
As for the big bombshell. I think people are right that it has something to do with Vegeta... or it's some kind of big secret new transformation or who knows what at the end. It's hard to say. I don't think the secret is just Vegeta wins the fight or something. Maybe something a little more?

There's more to it than that. He mentions all kinds of information linking BoG with the manga, he even talks about a lot of this stuff in the Q&As of the full colour manga. In the manga Jaco the galactic patrolman he even has SSJ God mentioned.Suupaa Gohan 2 wrote:Except there is, because nowhere does he actually state anything along the lines of "this is an official continuation of the original manga". Until he does, everything would seem to be open to interpretation.
I'm sure Toriyama has mentioned before how he just can't keep up with being a mangaka anymore, but if Toriyama decides this story is a part of his 'canon' it doesn't matter that it's animated its just his story put into animation which means less workload for the man since he can't keep up now. Another thing I think he said before was that he can obsess over the smallest bits of dialogue because he doesn't have to draw, and he even said that was exhausting.
Now you don't have to consider it canon, but with everything we've heard off Toriyama he sure as hell puts it with his own 'canon'.

ON AN UNRELATED NOTE I JUST THOUGHT OF (but related to the movie)... I just thought of something. For all the people who claimed that Freeza not training makes him lazy and stupid..... Freeza never lifted a finger to fight anyone if he didn't have to, heck he didn't even FLY on his own accord if he didn't have to. He wasn't lazy, he was privileged. He wouldn't ever have trained because he was like royalty. He didn't need to, his entire organization did everything for him and it was beneath him to do anything. He saw himself being involved as almost a privilege for those he was fighting/killing. Like, "You actually have the HONOR of being destroyed by me." Makes sense that he would never have trained enough (if ever at all) to discover his true strength.

If Akira toriyama cant keep up with being a mangaka why cant he let his son be a mangaka? hell he could probably draw and continue the legacy of his dad's story franchise, I mean how cool would that be?Sora Saiyan wrote:There's more to it than that.
