The problem with casting kids is their voices change rapidly.

Movie was the intance we begun to see his voice crack a lot but yeah he did pretty well he's gone on to be a pretty good VA for FUNi maybe there is something in Super for him? Anyway back to when he was younger didn't FUNi release FMA in 2004? Was there much DB material around then?Bansho64 wrote:Are we talking specifically Dragon Ball or just for everything? I disagree either way, but I thought they did their best casting for a kid when they casted Aaron Dismuke as Alphonse Elric in FMA 2003. From what I know of, that was one of the few times where they got an actual little kid to play a main role. Here's a sample of what it sounds like. It's the guy in the armor. Eventually, puberty came and he has to grow up, but he was able to do a whole series and the Movie that came with it.SingleFringe&Sparks wrote:I mean Funimation has never cast the voices for kids correctly.
To bring it back the DB, wouldn't it have been cool if Aaron had done stuff in Dragon Ball back when he was younger?
Also, that "myth" really isn't a myth at all. There are millions of boys who sound like high pitched young women. It's just the way a lot of them sound before puberty. I myself did and got a little teasing because of it. It's definitely not a myth. That's like saying that it's a "myth" that some women sound like young men.

Aaron actually dubbed Minoshia, Tapion's brother in Movie 13 which was just a scream. In 04 all of DB, most of DBZ (1-67!redub had yet to be released), DB movies 2-4, DBZ movies 4-9, DBZ specials & GT was being dubbed and was on Toonami at the time.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:Movie was the intance we begun to see his voice crack a lot but yeah he did pretty well he's gone on to be a pretty good VA for FUNi maybe there is something in Super for him? FMA is a FAR shorter series than DB. Eventually they would have to recast. In ReBoot, there were around 4 Enzo's because the kids' voices kept changing. Women voicing little boys is just something you'll have to deal with.

Yeah, his voice did crack sometimes in Conqueror of Shamballa, particularly in this scene. I personally didn't mind it though, because it really made me feel how heartbroken Al was. I thought he did a pretty fantastic job.Baggie_Saiyan wrote: Movie was the intance we begun to see his voice crack a lot but yeah he did pretty well he's gone on to be a pretty good VA for FUNi maybe there is something in Super for him? That was him? Nice. Dang, I wish he could've done some more of the stuff that was being done back then. I think he might've made a good Gohan or Goten in his younger years. Currently, I'm not sure. His young Hohenheim voice sounds like a good fit for someone like Goten as a teen or someone in the teenage age range.DB_Fan1991 wrote: Aaron actually dubbed Minoshia, Tapion's brother in Movie 13 which was just a scream. I never had a problem with it. All I was saying is that it would've been nice to hear him voice someone in the franchise. Young or old. Matter of fact, hardly anyone here say they did besides SingleFringe&Sparks.ABED wrote: Women voicing little boys is just something you'll have to deal with.

If you were to switch Bart & Lisa's voices (who the characters are relatively the same age group and both played by women) for example, could you really tell me that there isn't a distinct difference?Bansho64 wrote:Also, that "myth" really isn't a myth at all. I'm not saying my issue is with women voicing boys,I know why they are cast under a plethora of reasons and conveniences. My issue is when they don't sound like actual boys. I never found Colleen's voice convincing at all in comparison to other women that do voice boy characters.Bansho64 wrote:I never had a problem with it. But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

I agree his voice was perfect for the role, I wonder how much he got payed?Bansho64 wrote:Are we talking specifically Dragon Ball or just for everything? Sorry to change the topic briefly!
I noticed they didn't show a next episode preview on Adult Swim last week. Was this the same case for Kai 1.0 during its run? I was curious to see it because I heard the International version has a different song to the Japanese version.

Yup, Toonami cut out the NEPs on the Adult Swim airing for the first arcs of Kai as well (even though, oddly enough, they kept them in the censored Nicktoons airing).GokuTheMaster389 wrote:Sorry to change the topic briefly!

You're also right that the international cut has different songs than the Japanese cut. Here are the songs for the international cut.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Possible, certainly, but I wouldn't bet on that based on the fact that Nicktoons kept them.jcogginsa wrote:It might have been Funimation who cut them for the broadcastTheBlackPaladin wrote:Yup, Toonami cut out the NEPs on the Adult Swim airing for the first arcs of Kai as well (even though, oddly enough, they kept them in the censored Nicktoons airing).GokuTheMaster389 wrote:Sorry to change the topic briefly!

My best guess as to why is that since the Nicktoons airing was edited and inevitably had some footage cut out in each episode, it was OK to air the NEPs then because it could make up for the lost time. The Toonami airing is uncut, though, and without any of the footage edited out, maybe there just wasn't enough room to include the NEPs before Toonami has to switch to the next show.

Well, we know it wasn't Toonami that cut the OPs and EDs. They air those as they get themTheBlackPaladin wrote:Possible, certainly, but I wouldn't bet on that based on the fact that Nicktoons kept them.

Other than Never Give Up! being trimmed a bit on Toonami, there being no eyecatches, and no next episode previews, the rest of the episode is intact.
Re: "Dragon Ball Z Kai: The Final Chapters" FUNimation English Dub Official Announcement and Discussion Thread
I still find it so weird that they kept the previews on Nicktoons, but like you said in your latest post, the lack of footage to cut means Toonami can't air them because COMMERCIAL MONEY. Looking forward to those on the DVDs.TheBlackPaladin wrote:Yup, Toonami cut out the NEPs on the Adult Swim airing for the first arcs of Kai as well (even though, oddly enough, they kept them in the censored Nicktoons airing).GokuTheMaster389 wrote:Sorry to change the topic briefly!

And I'm still sad we couldn't get Kuu-Zen-Zetsu-Go or Dear Zarathustra for The Final Chapters at all, not even the improved footage from the OP that gets used in the Japanese version. That scene where Buu and Goku are fighting and the fast jump between Buu charging his ball and Goku yelling is so jarring to me, and so is the part where the song's at "Go, Kamehameha!" and Goku's just standing there at Bulma's before suddenly FIGHTING. I know companies usually give out their best masters for international distribution (except for the occasional TV-airing master), so I'm surprised they also didn't update Fight It Out's animation with the fixes, or maybe combine the footage so it feels more organic.
My gripe over those songs aside (I just love them, okay), I really enjoyed TFC Episode 1. Kyle Hebert, I thought, was great as Gohan, and his voice sounded very natural, much like his BoG/RF voice. Videl's voice sounds so much better this go-around, too. And I did like the Sumitomo score here; I remember watching more of the Japanese airings and aside from the much more rushed pace, the Sumitomo score also sounded a bit rougher, while it felt appropriate a lot here. Though I know that changes later on... *glares at disco track* Also, I got a kick out of the delivery a lot too; Gohan's "Don't hit the ball, don't hit the ball..." when that's kind of the point, Sharpner's shocked yelling when he hits Gohan, "The new guy's HOT!"... I've been looking forward to this arc getting the new accurate-dub treatment (it was a favorite growing up), and so far I'm liking it. Very eager to see what comes up.

I'm doubting they recorded Gohan calling Buu a retard. That doesn't seem like something they'd do.The gr wrote:Is not confirmed but I'm just saying I'm looking forward to that scenesimtek34 wrote:When did they confirm this? The gr wrote:And of course Gohan calling Buu a retard
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

I can almost guarantee they're not going to have Gohan using the r-word. He might call Boo a "moron" or a "dumbass", but the r-word would be pushing it, especially if it's coming out of the good guy's mouth. This isn't South Park.

But didn't Gohan say that in the Jap version or unless I'm wrong and dumbass is way worse than retard but he might call him an idiot or a moronWittyUsername wrote:I can almost guarantee they're not going to have Gohan using the r-word.
